okay, so wii supports 5.1 surround using pro logic ii, just like gamecube did. trouble is i never maged to figured out exactly what's needed to get pro logic ii working with gamecube.

my parents did have a pretty expensive dvd player with 5.1, which had a dolby digital and a pro logic ii logo on the front, but for some reason just sending the gamecube's sound through my dvd player only output in stereo :(

does anyone know exactly what i'm gonna need to get 5.1 surround on wii?

It's simulated, not true 5.1

I think 4 sound channels are supported and it's like encrypted over 2 channels. Your DVD player might output Pro Logic II but I don't think it's capable of decoding that.

It's quite an archaic system I've heard.. most modern amplifiers (what you need) don't even support it as standard.

I think you'll need to pick up a Pro Logic II amplifier off eBay or Cash Converters. Can't imagine they cost much, but with the digital revolution you'd be lucky to find one in your local Bennets/equivalent.

edit: Quick eBay search found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-STR-DE495-Receiver-from-Richer-Sounds_W0QQitemZ120056369090QQihZ002QQcategoryZ122650QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Richer Sounds are pretty trustworthy, but judging from the prices this is gonna set you back towards the top end of 2 figures, maybe even 3 figures.

You need an amp that can decode the pro logic II signal from the two audio channels. Actually an older amp that only supports pro logic should also work. The effect isn't as nice though. And of course the 5 speakers :)

Don't be too hasty with your bidding.. Sony stuff isn't always best but I'd say this looks like an okay bit of kit.

Have a search around (AVForum.co.uk) and see what else people recommend that's in your price range if you're not succesful on that one.

Is the DVD player connected to an amplifier? If so, try plugging the GameCube's audio leads straight into it.

Also, wanted to say that I find absolutely no difference in PL2 and DTS.

nah, the dvd player itself had 5 speaker outputs, so i guess it had a built in amp. it seems silly that it could decode pro-logic ii from dvd's but not from it's own inputs, but nevermind.

5.1 didn't bother me too much with cube, so i pretty much gave up right away when it didn't work. but wii games seem more immersive, so i'd like to get the best playing experience in 12 DAYS TIME! :D :D :D

Don't buy anything just yet. By your description, your DVD player can decode Pro Logic 2. I too have a DVD player that decodes it, but you have to change some settings to make it output in 5.1 instead of just Stereo. Check the manual. On my DVD player, in the Aux mode, i have to specifically set it to Pro Logic 2, or it will only output in Stereo. I use it with gamecube and it works pretty well.

Also, the games usually have the standard setting as Stereo. Don't forget to change it.

There's supposed to be slots on the back of your DVD player that look like this:

If you put in the red and white cables from the cable coming from your Cube/Wii in the corresponding slot, and put your DVD player in AUX mode, it should be able to do Pro Logic II. Refer to the manual though.

yeah that's exactly what i done and no luck, the manual had pretty much no information on the aux mode either. a proper pro-logic ii amp seems the way to go, if i can get zelda in 5.1 i don't care what the cost is, lol.

If the slots are there it has to work...

OK, could you please redo these steps?

1) Take the red and white components of the Cube cable and put them in the back of your DVD player/home cinema centre. Make sure white is in white and red is in red. Also make sure the cables fit the 100% and are plugged in all the way.

2) Turn on your DVD player and surround system and put the DVD player in AUX mode. If necessary, set the DVD player to Pro Logic II or analog sound in the options menu.

3) Turn on your GameCube with a PL2 game in it (preferably TWW or something) and give it a test run. If you can't hear anything, scale up the volume. Some stereo devices require you to turn up the volume.

yeah i tried just about every combination of settings possible at the time, the game i was using was rogue leader. i've traded my cube in now for a credit note towards wii anyways, so i can't try setting it up again till dec 8th, but thanks for the advice :-)
