Nintendork Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 American culture? Pfft.. didn't you know most UK schools have cancelled sports day since they fear that parents might sue for dehydration or sun stroke? The most ridiculous thing to get banned at my school was.. erm. Fights Organised fights were banned, if you knew about one and you didn't tell you'd get suspended.. if you planned one you'd get suspended and if you were involved in one you'd get suspended. That's about all I cared for. On a side note they tolerated smoking as long as you did it responsibly.. not profiteering.. putting out your butts and not forcing other kids to breath in your smoke.
MoogleViper Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 American culture? Pfft.. didn't you know most UK schools have cancelled sports day since they fear that parents might sue for dehydration or sun stroke? When I was in year 2 we had this female headteacher and she cancelled sports day so that people didn't get upset when they lost. We had a shitty activity day instead.
Nintendork Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I enterred the retard group, we got something for doing 800 metres. It took some of us 20 minutes just for a laugh. Some of us were rolling around. It is quite bad.. because it really encourages celebration of physical ability. Where is maths day celebrating the geeks? It's in the toilets getting it's head flushed that's where. I think it should be there, but to compliment other forms of achievement too. All that parental pressure too does nobody any good.
Twilight Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Kids are meant to run around and play games. Of course someone gets hurt every now and then but hey, that´s called life. They have rest of their lifes to be boring and sit in the office around the clock.
mcj metroid Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 We weren't allowed to play Tag at Primary school. We're weren't allowed to run in the playground. thats true neither were we.i used to hate it very much
MoogleViper Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 It is quite bad.. because it really encourages celebration of physical ability. What's wrong with that? We should be encouraging people to be physically and mentally healthy. Especially in this world of fast food and sweets etc. Where is maths day celebrating the geeks? It's in the toilets getting it's head flushed that's where. Ok I agree that there should be a day like that also. But just because not all things arecelebrated it doesn't mean that you can't celebrate any. In my school we do have an awards ceremony for all subjects. I've won a fair few maths awards.
Nintendork Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I went to a specialist sports college, it had a sports centre built next to it.. everyone was very proud of it. Princess Anne even flew in on chopper to open the £750,000 astro turf pitch. It had the equipment, it had the facilities and it had the students. The staff were the problem.. people aren't interested in sports anymore, they don't motivate kids to do it anymore. It's not encouraging, it's about performance and district trials. The problem is not with celebrating.. it's about making the kids in the first place want to do it. In my day a lolly pop was enough of a bribe to make us do it, but now kids are too lazy. Sports day isn't the way to do it though. It alienates those who are shit directly, and doesn't celebrate them. Political correctness is the problem there.

I agree that sports day does only celebrate the ones that are good. But that doesn't mean we should scrap it. It just means that you need to find a different way to encourage the lesser abled students. I think the only problem with sports day is that (in my school) everyone has to do it. They need to understand that sports day is humiliating for some people.
