demonmike04 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Sorry about the title, but its an attention grabbing one which I require right now, i'l tell you more within the post. Im all for this new school healthy eating plan as we are becoming very unhealthy now, and its good to teach kids what should be eaten to lead a healthy life style. Every school has adopted this.. Shire Catering The food provider for my school. Not only do they supply the food, but they get every other order in for our school, so they have complete order over what the menu prices should be. Now this is we're things get interesting.. The only thing cheap is the set meals, I think its £1.50 - £2 which I personally think is alright. So thats the food down, but what about tackling the drinks side? Soda is a main cause of obesity due to its sugar levels being addictive. Well, you've grabbed your meal. Lets pick up a drink, OH WAIT! Its £1.05 for a cold bottle of decent water. The school fountains are a pile of crap, warm water with a slow dispense rate. So, kids can either choose the following: - Warm water from drink fountain - Cold water for £1.05 - Small box of juice (about 150ml) Disgraceful. There is one thing I deliberately missed out, bringing in stuff from home. But that, as proven in the past with my school, creates a problem. We're making a loss, change the school rules You had an option in my school, if you were in year eight and above and had a valid permission slip from your parents, you were allowed to go to the local shops. This worked out incredibly cheaper for parents who had a single child, as they would get more for their money (Chips in school : 80p for a butty with above 10 fat chips in). EVERYONE went to the shops except for year 7's. Then, something happend. We had a temporary rule against going there as an old man had written to the local paper saying it was intimidating. The next week, people wrote in to slam his claims as other people were fine with us. Normal rules resumed. But during this time, people went to the cantine, sandwiches went up by 50p. In one of the days, there was a gas 'fault' in the cantine, so the staff went to tesco's, bought extra value rolls with extra value ham and extra value cheese slices. Made rolls out of them, sold them for £1.10 each. Pathetic. 2 years afterwards, it was evident the cantine was losing money as prices went sky-rocketing more than usual. Then out of the blue came a new rule. No one is allowed up the square. The reason? We didnt 'need' to as the school already has sufficient facilities for lunch. Since then, the cantine has been ripping those off, this thread is a topic about 2 things. Healthy eating, how one side is tackled yet the drinks are still not being dealed with. The other being how much of a rip off shire catering is. The school still sticks with shire catering despite numerous complaints from staff and student. So: Questions! 1) - Do you feel that enough is being done to enforce healthy eating. Infact, do you agree with it? 2) - Any suggestions as to how us students can get this damn catering company changed, and how would you go about boycotting it if you were me. As im pretty sick of this rip off.
Cube Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 So: Questions!1) - Do you feel that enough is being done to enforce healthy eating. Infact, do you agree with it? The way the government are doing it is the problem. They need to be concentrating more on a balanced diet, and not shoving so-called "healthy" food. (Don't get me started on "organic" food) 2) - Any suggestions as to how us students can get this damn catering company changed, and how would you go about boycotting it if you were me. As im pretty sick of this rip off. Possibilities: - Get everyone in the school to sign a petition - Get everyone in school to avoid the canteen for a week - Get your parents to write a nice letter to the school. (no matter what age) If it doesn't improve, get them to write an angry letter.
somme Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 I ate junk food at school and I'm not obese. I ate loads of junk food, then started drinking. But I did run around wildly drunk in a field, guess I burnt those fatty foods off.
