Monster Hunter's grind isn't really done in the same way as, say, Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest grind though. It's entirely optional and the game is perfectly beatable without it getting the most powerful weapons or grinding to level up (in fact, it has no RPG mechanics like levelling up or experience points at all!)

That's why it's fine the way it currently is. You could say it's as grind heavy as you want it to be. You can have the satisfaction of gathering the materials you need to finally make that one weapon you've been pining for, or if you just want to carry on and progress without powering yourself up, that's absolutely possible as well (and that too has a strong feeling of satisfaction as you overcome the odds that you've stacked against yourself!)

RPGs can be played in exactly the same way. You can limit yourself to not using items, potions or even not levelling up. It's making a game within a game, something that a stupidly small percentage or crazy hardcore people do.

Yes, you could play Monster Hunter like that but the average, everyday player won't. The game is setup for you to hunt the same things over and over again. Whether this feels like a grind or a different type of grind is irrelevant, the grind mechanic is still very much there.

I'd like to see a normal player finish Monster Hunter without doing a single bit of farming/grinding. Once you kill the same monster TWICE (same quest) you are then starting to grind.

The exp needed for raising your Hunter Ranks would not come without grinding either. If you aren't grinding for materials then you certainly wouldn't hit the HR requirements to unlock certain monsters. IIRC you didn't unlock Abyssal Lagi until HR70-80 on MH3U.

That's fair enough @Hero\-of\-Time, but the grind is done to a degree in Monster Hunter that it still feels thoroughly entertaining... whereas other games (Destiny in particular) it can be absolutely shockingly bad!

...that's still all subject to opinion, I do appreciate.
