Super Smash Brothers 3DS

Nintendo said the WiiU version was there, it was. But not for anyone to play unless they won a Smash Brothers 3DS tournament or a challenge they set. Little miffed, but I did play the 3DS version. And got my backside handed to me. Game is out this week, so full opinions coming then.

This isn't the first time they've done that, my mate went to something a few months back where it was the same thing, though I think 3DS character selection was limited there, possibly to the demo characters. Can't comment on WiiU characters as he didn't make it beyond the 3DS :p Regardless, this whole 3DS barrier I find a rather curious approach to take!

They had a contest where you had to do 10 hula hoops to get a shot at the WiiU version of Smash Brothers, only you had to play as the Wii Fit Trainer. I kind of wish they'd open a booth after the contests for people to have a go, maybe even as a prize on the Nintendo loot wheel.

It's almost as if they don't WANT people to play the WiiU version...

Well, they did let them play with Gamecube controllers (that's when they let them play of course)

Yeah I spoke to a guy who apparently made it to the semis(maybe even final?) and another who also made it through the 3DS round, they were telling me about it and obviously it sounded awesome just seems a bit strange to be restricting access to something like WiiU smash given the situation of the WiiU. Apparently they didn't have the plug in cube adapters yet either, rather the gamecube wiimote adapter? That still confuses me that they've got two options atm, not sure why they'd split focus(except unofficial implementations of the wiimote adapter existed already ages ago).

The way they did it made the tournament pretty special, all eyes were on the big screen. I think they made the right decision.

Don't get me wrong, seeing Smash on the big screen was nice to see. But i don't know why they said it would be there and playable, if it wasn't playable for the majority but a minority.

They did have a Mario Kart tournament on the big screen as well (but that was hosted by Nintendo Life, and they had a separate qualifying tournament before EGX), so when i heard about Smash having a tournament i was expecting a few pods nearby for people to practice on.

I actually thought they had the WiiU plug-in adapters in use, guess that put that out of my mind.

It could be that they wanted the majority of people to play the 3DS version in anticipation of the release this Friday. If the Wii U version was available for everyone to play, far fewer people would try the 3DS version.
