Rummy
Hi all, This is something I've always wondered, as I always hear various anecdotal evidence about what is a good or a bad brand HDD to buy, yet I really struggle to find any solid numbers/research into it. I was wondering if any of you tech-typey folks know of anything? Any databases, papers etc? (for the record, it's spurred by my recent HDD problems...my brand new seagte was either DoA, or very quickly mashed itself up, failing a Short DST. Annoyingly, my friend did swear off Seagate and now he's bloody right!)
Cube
Simple answer: All brands make great and terrible HDDs. Thus, it's entirely dependant on the individual model, not brand.
Rummy
So it seems, but I thought there might be collated data out there about fails/successes. I'm switching from Seagate to WD anyhow, as they replaced the faulty drive but the new one failed the Short DST too.

James
Have you considered Solid State Drives, I got's me one for my 5 year old laptop, it's pretty decent now. I got mine from Crucial.
Rummy
Yeah I'm thinking of one for down the line, but atm I need the space of a larger drive. With SSDs falling I'm hoping to pick one up probably next year, at the moment there's no pressing need for me to have one and I know I'll get spoilt by it. This may be of use. http://www.behardware.com/articles/843-6/components-returns-rates-5.html Looks like a start, thanks. I swear I came across some sort of supposed database previously, but I can't seem to find it again.
