my girlfriend's parents have a laptop that powers up so that the cd tray opens (no idea if relevant), but nothing comes on the screen. I've hooked it up to another monitor and tried pressing the change screen source button thing (F4) but the monitor still says no signal. Anyone got any diagnosing ideas?

If you hook up a second monitor, does stuff come up before it gets into windows? BIOS tasks etc?

Disk tray should open as soon as it has power so not really relevant. Does it make the windows startup sound?

Oh, hai! I didn't think I actually posted this.

I ended up setting up a second monitor and it made no difference - no sounds, no visuals at all, just the CD tray whirring for a bit and responding to the eject button. The clue was in the flashing caps lock light. Googled that and found that it was an issue with the seating of the RAM - my diagnostic work was done. Laptop was a loaner from the school the mum worked at so she wouldn't let me open it up and fiddle :P

Probably too late now but RAM trays on laptops are a doddle to open up. Just on the underside there'll be a couple of screws to undo and in theory all that should be there is the RAM.
