Broadband help

Recommended Posts

I'm about to move in to a new house and am looking to get broadband. We're only in until june so only need 9 months (unless 12 months still works out cheaper).

Questions:

-do you know any good deals?

-how much bandwidth should we expect to use? (there are two of us)

It won't be that easy to sign up anywhere for 12 months, but you can (usually) take the service with you when you move.

If you use O2 for your mobile phone, I would definitely recommend them as an ISP. They are basically the same company as Be (http://www.bethere.co.uk) which provide super fast ADSL, but if you have a mobile with O2, the prices are hugely slashed. £8/month if you're on O2 gives you a 20GB cap. £12/month gives you unlimited browsing.

Check http://www.hotukdeals.com/ for good prices and vouchers for whichever company you look into. For example, this guy got home phone and broadband for £7.50/mo: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/02-broadband-and-phone/776144

Do you use Quidco? You should. Everyone should. http://www.quidco.com - Quidco gives you cashback on your purchases and some of the best deals are those on utility contracts. The basic premise is, you go through quidco, click a link through to the ISP you want to buy from and in two months time, quidco sends you £50 (with o2, more with others!). Just like that. You'd be daft not to take a look.

We both play online games. We don't stream music. He watches lots of YT vids and I watch a lot of TV online (BSG, stargate, iplayer stuff etc.)

We don't need tv/phone.

The best deal we've seen so far is this one:

https://shop.virginmedia.com/bundles/specials/students.html?buspart=buyat

Good because it's a 9 month contract and is unlimited allowance.

10MB would be 180 for the 9 months and 20 would be 250. (can get free activation with NUS extra card as well)

What do you think of the deal?

Would you recommend 10 or 20MB?

PlusNet and BE do shorter contracts.

Two important questions:

1. Is cable available in your area?

2. What speed is available in your area.

If cable is available, then Virgin will likely be the cheapest as you don't have to worry about line rental.
