Analysis from NPD's Anita Frazier:

"The industry realized another month of decreased sales as compared to last year. In fact, for most categories, unit sales declines were greater than dollar sales. Higher average retail prices on all categories except console hardware boosted dollar sales performance somewhat."

"Honestly, I had expected the industry to perform somewhat better this month. Nonetheless, strong new releases, and Easter gift-buying bodes well for industry performance in March."

Hardware

"Overall hardware unit sales were down, but certain platforms enjoyed an increase over last year. Xbox 360 nabbed the top-spot among the three console systems for the first time since September 2007 when Halo 3 as released. PS3 enjoyed a 30% increase over last year, even while retail supply is reported to remain constrained."

"DS sales continue to remain quite strong, even leading up to the launch of the Dsi XL later this month on March 28th, which will have 7 days of sales during our March reporting month."

Software

"The top 10 list this month is quite balanced between the three console platforms with three each for the PS3 and Wii platforms, and four for the 360."

"Bioshock 2 was the best-selling game in February, selling over 750K units at retail across platforms. The 360 version was the top-selling SKU for the month."

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the third-best-selling game of all-time, now at just under 10 million units life-to-date."

Accessories

"Year-to-date, accessories is the only category to have eeked out a modest increase versus last year. Unit sales, however, are down so the increase is solely due to an increase in pricing, which is up 13%."

This is the first time since the PS3 Slim was released that the Wii has sold less than the other home consoles isn't it? Guess it is losing momentum. Maybe we'll be seeing a successor sooner than we think.

Assuming that whatever Nintendo does with the Vitality Sensor toward the end of the year will prove to be the next big thing to hold up the console to ridiculously high levels, they're still looking at a relatively weak first half (compared to previous years), though the appeal of the likes of Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros Wii will undoubtedly sustain it above its competitors.

Games like Other M and Galaxy 2 (and maybe even Monster Hunter 3 depending on the marketing) are going to be huge. But Wii has penetrated the market so deep (snigger) now that there aren't going to be many people who will buy these who don't already own a Wii. In short, I think we're past the point where first-party 'core' titles will move systems. Those system-selling core titles were already pushed out between 2006 and mid-2008.

So Wii sales will probably remain moderate throughout the first half of 2010. We can't make predictions about the second half until Nintendo outlines their release plans at E3. Will the console manage to stay above competitors from next month onwards? Probably. Sounds like a fanboy's excuse, but at least there are analysts who have gone on-record to back me up here - Wii was in short supply in the US yet again in February. It'll probably be even closer next month, but if Nintendo can get on top of demand again quickly, Wii will probably regain the top spot.

Press Release

NINTENDO DS FAMILY SETS NEW PORTABLE SALES RECORD FOR FEBRUARY

With more than 613,000 units sold in February, the Nintendo DS™ family of systems set a new U.S. record for portable video game sales in the month of February, according to the independent NPD Group. This tally surpasses the previous record of more than 597,000 units set by Nintendo DS in February 2009.

Wii recorded another strong month of sales, despite being hindered by continued product shortages that affected U.S. retail locations during the month. Even so, Nintendo still managed to sell more than 397,000 Wii systems at retail for the month.

With these sales through the end of February, consumers have already purchased 1.9 million Nintendo hardware systems in 2010 alone.

"Here in its sixth year of availability, Nintendo DS continues to expand the appeal of video games," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We expect the public's appetite for these systems will grow even more when we introduce our new extra-large model, the Nintendo DSi XL, on March 28."

Three of the top five best-selling games of February play on Nintendo systems. These include New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii at No. 1 with more than 555,000 sold, Ubisoft's Just Dance™ at No. 4 with more than 275,000 sold and Wii Sports Resort™ with the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory at No. 5 with more than 272,000 sold.

Nintendo ran out of Wii's, they're having serious supply shortages in the US.

Completely disagree, I think a lot of families and NIntendo fans and ACTUAL core gamers already own the system, but there are a lot of "core" gamers who don't. Who I think will when these games come out; I think we'll see huge spikes over May and June

Realistically speaking, I think the non-Nintendo-loyalist core gamers who were going to buy a Wii for the likes of Mario, Zelda and Metroid would have already done so for Twilight Princess, Galaxy and Corruption. The sequels we're getting this year are going to appeal to those guys.

I think its more likely we see people buying consoles for Zelda this fall. Metroid has never been a huge seller, and Mario dosen't really attract the sort of crowd you're talking about, not to mention, like D_prOdigy said, they would have already bought one for the first Mario Galaxy. Although, I still think Zelda will be a bit of a system seller. A lot of people were looking at all the consoles back when Twilight princess was coming out, and deciding which one they should get first. If a Wii wasn't their first priority, chances are they would have waited, as they would have probably just put down a bunch of money on a PS3 or 360 (which were, as we all know, huge investments back then). Twilight Princess also wasn't as well received as a lot of people thought it would have been, so chances are, a lot of people would have been put off from buying a Wii just for that.

But I reckon I lot sold their Wiis during the supposed lull. I know a couple of my friends did; I reckon quite a lot will. I will put my left testicle on big spikes in Wii sales in May and June

Waittttt the Arcade is outselling the Elite?!

There could well be a reasonable amount of people buying second 360s who are just going for the cheap option and transferring their hard drive over. I know a few people who have done that.
