Unit sales increased even more than dollar sales did, reflecting a slightly lower average retail price for all categories as compared to last year. The Xbox 360 realized its biggest non-holiday sales month, save for September 2007, when the Halo 3 release brought in a large group of new owners. Compared to last month, the PS3 realized the greatest month-over-month unit sales increase of all platforms. Consumers picked up nearly 20 million units of video game software in February, a 14% increase over February 2008. The average retail price for games is 4% lower than last year, which is why the dollar sales increase is not quite keeping in pace with the increase in unit sales. A long-established video game franchise, the Street Fighter property continues to generate impressive sales results. The great performance of the new title, Street Fighter IV, on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, is a testament to the power of carefully cultivating evergreen properties. March should be another great month for software sales between Pokemon Platinum, GTA: Chinatown Wars, Halo Wars, the two MLB titles and of course, Resident Evil 5, just to name a few of the key drivers. The sheer quantity of great content coming to market early in the year should keep industry sales humming throughout 2009.
Zechs Merquise Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I'm pleased to see Nintendo are pulling away further in the states as SONY have had a good two weeks in Japan. Funny to see after all the over-hype for Killzone 2 it did nothing to lift sales of the PS3!
Choze Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 (edited) Funny to see after all the over-hype for Killzone 2 it did nothing to lift sales of the PS3! Over hype? If anything its underhyped. Awareness may be high for the gamers who follow news but not in awareness or hype compared to the likes of say Resident Evil or Street Fighter. Its very far from a household name. Plus the game has had to deal with alot of negativity over the years. The turning point for some positive words was the beta onwards because the online beta was so damn good. Otherwise it was just another graphics wars game(even for me). Spent about 210 hours now playing Killzone 2. So damn good. No coincidence that other fps are doing all the DLC and upgrade packs right now! Fear the Killzone! We have clan openings. So feel free to ask for joining N-E ELITES! Anyone welcome. This game was hype central. Also, I'm sick of seeing people's Killzone avatars and GIFs. This has been main news on all the gaming sites for years and has had the cover of every PS3 mag on more than one occassion. It's had the hype and it still didn't shift the systems.
Choze Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Interesting facts: House of the Dead did 55k in the US. Wiifit now overtakes Halo 3 total sales in record time. This game was hype central. Also, I'm sick of seeing people's Killzone avatars and GIFs. This has been main news on all the gaming sites for years and has had the cover of every PS3 mag on more than one occassion. It's had the hype and it still didn't shift the systems. It was hyped no doubt but mostly among the hardcore and mainly as a technical poster boy for PS3 for most of its life. Its not like RE5 which is proven(had 5x hits/views on trailers against KZ2) and a household name massively outperforming RE4's sales. KZ2 establishes the franchise firmly in an already very crowded genre. I think it will/should overtake Resistance soon enough. Its kind of like the RE4 where its building and reestablishing the franchise rather than a big sequel. Hope that makes sense. I think its unrealistic to make the assumption that quality games will ever make a long term effect on console sales. They simply dont. I look forward to next month KZ2 sales but i doubt they will be that high as this month. I wish it the best though.

I disagree about the console sales - Halo and Halo 2 (especially the later) really turned the XBOX sales around. I think Killzone 2 was seen as a bit of a 'great white hope' for the PS3 as SONY seemed to be desperately searching for an exclusive killer app as most the system selling games have now gone multiplatform and most serious gamers would rather play them on XBOX due to XBOX Live. I think their biggest loss so far was the GTA series.

This has been main news on all the gaming sites for years and has had the cover of every PS3 mag on more than one occassion. It's had the hype and it still didn't shift the systems. that's probably because killzone 1 sucked or that many people see it as a halo wannabe...which in all fairness is.. It may not be the same but this is very much sony's answer to halo which isn't a bad thing at all really I mean it's only part of the 1 million other halo clones. An interesting point to note is that wii fot has actually outsold halo 3 overall in the us.....i'm sure it's the same everywhere else too despite halo3 being out first etc. I disagree about the console sales - Halo and Halo 2 (especially the later) really turned the XBOX sales around. Choze Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Well WiiFit is perfect for the audience that Nintendo is after. In comparison you could argue Killzone 2 would be better on 360 or PC target market wise. I expect big sales for the new Wii Sports and Mario Kart will continue to sell well. I think their biggest loss so far was the GTA series. Well GTA went to Xbox last gen. I agree that Sony shouldnt keep paying out 3rd parties. Afterall 50m for GTA's DLC and more for development is a bit much. You could fit many LBP into that and their financial position is the biggest worry for them. The saviour thing seems to come form Nintendo or MS fanboys. On PS platforms its never about the 'one next big game' like Nintendo or Xbox platforms. There are several on the go at any one time and the games appeal to very different audiences. Whether its LBP, Fl0wer, Noby Noby Boy or KZ2 they definately please different types of people. I dont think you will have shortage of choice with PS3. this is very much sony's answer to halo which isn't a bad thing at all really I mean it's only part of the 1 million other halo clones. Its nothing like Halo. Was never dubbed a Halo killer. KZ2 is its own game and was always intended that way.
mcj metroid Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Its nothing like Halo. Was never dubbed a Halo killer. KZ2 is its own game and was always intended that way. Killzone was dubbed THE halo killer. I realise sony didn't so this themselves but their idiotic magazines.. some of them claim killzone 2 is the bst fps ever.. Now i'm going to say I didn't play it yet but it's doubtful. Well I know maybe the story and such such may be different to halo but killzone 1 at least was definetly created with a halo rival in mind.. and killzone 2 is a sequel to that. It's not a bad thing as I said. Every console needs it's own version of something.. Forza motosport is microsofts answer to gran turismo(or was it pgr) etc etc
Nolan Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 If it's hyped, then it's overhyped. End of story, that's just the way it works for any game really. Good or otherwise.
Dante Posted March 22, 2009 Author Posted March 22, 2009 GameDaily BIZ has received the February video game sales data from The NPD Group and software sales were even higher than analysts had predicted. Total software sales came to $668.7 million, up 47 percent, while hardware sales grew 19 percent to $480 million. Accessories also grew 36 percent, totaling $185.3 million. Overall, total industry sales increased 34 percent to $1.33 billion. In terms of hardware, it was once again pure Nintendo domination. The DS sold a whopping 587.6K units while the Wii sold 432K units. The Xbox 360, which Microsoft said would likely trail the PS3 because of supply constraints, sold 254.6K units. The PS3 sold 280.8K units. Surprisingly, the old PS2 put up very respectable numbers with 351.8K units. Finally, the PSP also fared decently with another 243.1K units sold. On the software side, Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare continues to show its long legs, securing the top spot with more than 296,000 copies sold. Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 (on Xbox 360) was hot on its heels with 295.2K units sold. The Xbox 360 version of the game outsold the PS3 version by more than 60,000 units. Nintendo's Wii Play was also once again near the top, showing that packaging a Wii remote controller with some mini-games is a winning combination. Here's the top 10 (ranked by units) as provided by NPD: 1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Xbox 360 – Activision – 296.2K* 2. Devil May Cry 4 - Xbox 360 – Capcom – 295.2K* 3. Wii Play w/remote - Wii – Nintendo – 289.7K 4. Devil May Cry 4 - PS3 – Capcom – 233.5K* 5. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Wii – Activision – 222.9K* 6. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - DS – Sega of America – 205.6K 7. Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360 – Microsoft – 203.6K 8. Turok - Xbox 360 – Touchstone – 197.7K 9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - PS2 – Activision – 183.8K* 10. Rock Band - Xbox 360 – MTV Games/EA – 161.8K * Includes Collector's, Limited, Legendary, Bundles (Guitars) Editions BIZ: The PS2 hardware sales figure is surprisingly high to me. It's the system that never dies. What are your thoughts on PS2 sales and how long this aging system can keep this up? Anita Frazier: Yes, while I continue to expect strong PS2 sales for some time, the number surprised me as well. I think a number of things - price, promotional activity, and strong "mass-friendly" titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band to name a few - are contributing to the robust sales of PS2 hardware. I've said for awhile that I see the PS2 continuing to be a strong foundation for the video games market, and my opinion is only strengthened by these latest figures. In fact, PS2 hardware, software & accessories sales accounted for nearly 14% of total dollar sales this month. BIZ: What kind of growth are you seeing from Rock Band? It's in the top 10 but Guitar Hero is still ahead. AF: I don't see why there has to be a race between Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Both games are generating terrific sales, and players are enjoying the experiences that both of them provide. What is more interesting to me is that in what many are now deeming a recession, that games with such a premium price point are thriving. It's certainly a testament to the experience that both of these games deliver. BIZ: Judging by the large growth in software vs. the growth in hardware this month, 2008 will really been driven by software, right? AF: Yes, while hardware sales are still closely followed, at this point in the console lifecycle the focus once again returns to the heart of this industry - the games. There are some big games yet to drive sales in the first half of the year so I think we'll see more and more attention paid to games and how they affect the entire games ecosystem. BIZ: Any big surprises for you in February or trends you want to point out? AF: At the end of 2007 I expected 2008 to again be a record-breaking year for the video games industry, but with more modest growth than what was realized in 2007. So far this year the growth volume has surprised me a bit especially considering the state of the economy right now.

Well i dont know what you mean by 'meant'. Its never really been compared to Halo as a game. Perhaps you mean quality, fun factor etc? Which it seems to be doing very well at. The game has its own fans who have come from lots of other fps games. Regarding the hype thing look at Madworld which is an apt comparison. It got plenty of hype in the gaming media, Wii fans and hardcore but its not a massively hyped game at all. It didnt even debut in the top 20 of the UK chart. Deserves more though.

Choze Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Yeah its a crime. Hopefully it has legs like House of the Dead.
Zechs Merquise Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Yeah its a crime. Hopefully it has legs like House of the Dead. Wii games seem to sell quite differently to games on other systems. On the PS3/360 you often have a sudden burst for a game then sales drop off. With the Wii games seem to sell less on release but have longer legs. Just look at COD:WAW, it had a piss poor first month on Wii but is now about to top a million sales.
