According to Spong this info in slightly false.

Reports surfacing overnight claiming that Sony’s Howard Stringer had offered details of the looming PlayStation 3 have turned out to be totally false. The result of a failure to check facts by some web sites resulted claims that PlayStation 3, complete with media-enabled add-on packs, had been announced and priced by the Sony boss. The reports were ficticious, exposing a worrying lack of integrity at some publications.

Some sites repeated verbatim elements of a piece published on CNN yesterday without citing the source, nor checking its accuracy. One news site reported, “PS3 to launch at under $400; will ship with media bundle,†a tantalising headline indeed. It goes on to detail a Fortune Magazine report making no reference to the fact that all the information, which it transpired was completely false, was lifted from CNN. “Sony CEO Howard Stringer has given the clearest indication yet of the company's launch plans for PlayStation 3, stating that the next-gen system will enter the market at between $300 and $400 when it arrives in mid-2006,†reported the writer.

We were beaten to the punch in exposing the dupe by Christian Svensson of Next-Gen who noted, “…the reporting offered a dubious lack of quotes given that the news was sprung from an 'interview'. Next Generation picked up a copy of the 650 word interview in the December 5th issue of Fortune. The PS3 is only mentioned one time, and in reference to a question of how Sony will be generating top-line growth in the face of competition from Samsung and Apple.â€

And there’s a final twist, one described to us by one industry watcher as “So utterly transparent it verges on being nauseating.†The games industry writer posted a follow up piece, claiming “CNN drops PS3 price story as Stringer comments are confuted.†Inside it reads, “Comments published in a CNN article yesterday purporting to be from Sony CEO Howard Stringer regarding the planned pricing for PlayStation 3 have been removed after it emerged that he had not said anything on the question.â€

The writer then seeks to pin the blame for his journalistic blunder on CNN, rather than his own shameless plagiarism and lack of fact-checking.

“So where did the information come from, then? The culprit appears to be a Hollywood Reporter article on another interview with Stringer, which appeared a few weeks ago and also appeared to attribute pricing and availability information to the Sony CEO. However, on closer inspection, the article was actually citing an anonymous source within Sony.â€

(...)here's a 'slightly' biased IGN feature dissing the 360 and heralding the PS3 as the be-all end-all. View with buyers remorse.

EDIT: Ontopic... about spong... they have the fame, but lately they've been quite accurate, didn't they?

Judge them for what they were in the past year or so; not for what they were in the early begginig, if you were to judge human beings from the early beggining we would be just monkeys. (just my 2 cents)

PS3 just seems to have so many pointless features.

7 joypads on a single screen? Jesus christ, imagine that on split screen.

1080p? about 0.1% of people will even be able to run that. HD hasn't even taken off here yet! 720p is the most you're gunna need reguardless...

The point is, we will not know how really powerful the 360 and PS3 are untill they come to market with the same 3rd party game. Thats the only way to be really sure.

I still don't understand the 7 player thing

CNN drops PS3 price story as Stringer comments are confused

Rob Fahey 09:53 23/11/2005

No comments on pricing or availability from Sony boss after all

Comments published in a CNN article yesterday purporting to be from Sony CEO Howard Stringer regarding the planned pricing for PlayStation 3 have been removed after it emerged that he had not said anything on the question.

The article, which is attributed to FORTUNE senior editor Peter Lewis and was published on the CNN Money website, referenced a new interview with Stringer which has been published in Fortune magazine.

However, in the original version of the article, Lewis cited Stringer as saying that the PS3 would be priced between $300 and $400, and would launch in the middle of next year in Japan, followed by a US launch a couple of months later.

It transpires that no such information was discussed in the original FORTUNE interview - and CNN Money has now pulled the quotes, placing an addendum on the article which says that "Stringer has not commented publicly on how much the PS3 is expected to cost, or how soon it will appear in the US after the Japanese launch in spring 2006."

So where did the information come from, then? The culprit appears to be a Hollywood Reporter article on another interview with Stringer, which appeared a few weeks ago and also appeared to attribute pricing and availability information to the Sony CEO.

However, on closer inspection, the article was actually citing an anonymous source within Sony - a fine detail which the CNN article apparently missed, setting the whole rumour mill rolling once again.

To date, then, the only official comments on PS3 pricing have come in the form of admonishments from Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi that the new hardware will be expensive - although some commentators feel that these statements are more an indication of Sony's desire to keep the PS2 selling strongly than any real indication of PS3's price point.

I wouldnt of believed that any way... too much technology for such a price?

The fact they even announced they want people to think 'I will work extra hours to buy that console' but make it so cheap? Bollocks.

That gameshout article is based on rumours, but was taken way too serious.

If you remember, not too long ago the rumour of PS3 european launch in 2007 arised, yet still unknown to be true or false. Now, BBC being based in the UK, will only think of the european launch and think it was delayed that long, so most probably said it was delayed til 2007, but forget to mention in europe.

Either way, its bullshit, but may be true since Sony have been awfully quiet.

meh these "high prices" don´t move me that much in iceland we usually have to buy the console at 2 times more at launch.

for examble when the Ps2 came out in iceland it cost between 600-800 dollars (calculated from dollars to icelandic money)
