Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) Nintendo Q3 2009 Earning report: 9-mth profit down 41 pct Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS) posted a 41 percent fall in nine-month profit as sales of its DS handheld game player slowed and it cut the price of its Wii console, and the company kept a forecast for a first annual profit slide in four years. April-December operating profit at Nintendo, which competes with Sony Corp (6758.T) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), was 296.7 billion yen ($3.3 billion), down from 501.3 billion yen. Demand for the once-mighty DS began to slow as it entered its fifth year of production a year ago, and Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone and other smartphones emerged as alternative portable game machines. Profitability also came under pressure because Nintendo cut the price of the Wii by a fifth in the second half of 2009, responding to similar cuts by Sony and Microsoft, which offer the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, respectively. For the year to March, Nintendo kept unchanged its operating profit forecast of 370 billion yen, down from 555.3 billion yen a year earlier and versus a consensus of 361.1 billion yen in a poll of 20 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Shares in Nintendo closed up 2.5 percent at 26,320 yen ahead of the announcement, hitting a six-month high and outperforming the Nikkei average .N225, which rose 1.6 percent. Over the past year, Nintendo shares have lost 17 percent, while Sony gained 68 percent. Wii and Nintendo DS Overtake NES and GameBoy Having updated its lifetime hardware sales figures, Nintendo today announced that the Wii has outsold the Nintendo Entertainment System--making Wii the "best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time"--while the Nintendo DS has replaced the GameBoy as its best-selling hardware of all time. "Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained in his presentation. A breakdown of some top-selling Wii and Nintendo DS games accompanied the revelation, with the original Wii Sports--bundled with Wii hardware everywhere except Japan, where it is sold seperately--now at 60.69 million copies worldwide. The cumulative sales of Wii hardware from Nintendo to our distributors and retail customers reached 67.45 million units as of the end of December 2009. It has replaced NES to become the best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time. Among handheld hardware, GameBoy series have sold through 118.69 million units in total since the launch, which was the largest unit sales figure among all Nintendo's hardware products. As of the end of December 2009, when Wii marked the record LTD sales as the number one selling Nintendo home console, the life-to-date shipments of Nintendo DS series reached 125.13 million units, which has now become largest sales figure among all of the Nintendo's videogame hardware. Posted March 1, 2010 Nintendo Has Sold Ten Million Wiis In Japan The home team sure loves the Nintendo Wii. As February 28, Japan has purchased ten million Nintendo Wii consoles. But that's not all. According to Enterbrain, 10,009,736 Nintendo Wiis have been sold, 4,766,408 PS3s have been sold and 1,235,049 Xbox 360s. Posted May 8, 2010 (edited) Nintendo Posts First FY Profit Decline In Six Years After posting a decline in annual group net profit for the first time in six years from slowing sales of its DS handheld and Wii games consoles, Nintendo Co. (7974.OK) said it expects profit and sales to fall again this fiscal year as it plots new products to revive its growth. The Japanese video game giant said its net profit fell to Y228.64 billion in the fiscal year ended March 31, compared with Y279.09 billion a year earlier. Revenue fell 22% to Y1.434 trillion, while operating profit dropped 36% to Y356.57 billion. Nintendo's main hardware platforms are facing slowing sales after several years of rapid growth that pushed the company's results to record highs. Nintendo said sales of the Wii for the last fiscal year came to 20.53 million units worldwide, down 21% from the previous year. Posted May 11, 2010 (edited) Capcom's Sales and Earnings Fall Company expects rebound for following year due to major releases. Nintendo isn't the only major publisher seeing lower sales and profits. Capcom issued its own earnings report today, detailing sharp drops in sales and profits for the year ended March 31, 2010. Sales for the year decreased to ¥66,837 million, down 27.3% from 2009's ¥91,878 million. Operating income was down 61.8%, from ¥14,618 million to ¥5,587 million. As reason for the declines, Capcom mentioned poor performance from games like Bionic Commando (PS3/X360), Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles (Wii) and Dark Void (PS3/X360). Additionally, it seems that Lost Planet 2 and Super Street Fighter IV were originally scheduled for earlier release, as Capcom cited their delays to the 2011 fiscal year as contributing to depressed sales in overseas markets. Success stories included Monster Hunter Tri (Wii), Ace Attorney Investigations (DS) and Resident Evil 5 Alternative Edition (PS3/X360). These all "performed satisfactorily." For 2011, the company expects net sales to increase to ¥95,000 million and operating income to ¥15,000 million. This sharp rebound will come from the release of major titles, the company said. In its video game business -- more accurately, its "Consumer Online Games" business -- the company aims for net sales of ¥71,500 million, up from the ¥44,015 million of 2010. It expects a jump in operating profits for this sector from this year's ¥7,846 million to ¥15,300 million. It expects to have 75 game releases this year, with 20 million pieces of software sold, up from the 12.5 million of 2010. Japan was Capcom's biggest territory in 2010, accounting for 5.2 million pieces of software. In 2011, the company expects North America to sell the most units at 7.5 million, followed by Japan at 7 million and Europe at 5 million. PlayStation 3 will be Capcom's biggest platform in 2011, with 16 titles accounting for 6 million pieces of software sold. PSP is next with 19 titles and 5 million units. Next up is Xbox 360, with 12 titles and 4.8 million units, followed by DS's 16 titles at 1.7 million units and Wii's 6 titles at 1.6 million units. In its medium term goal section, the company listed some of the goals it has mentioned in past updates. It aims to for a 65% overseas sales ratio -- that is, for 65% of sales to come from outside of Japan. It also aims to "enlarge the MT Framework," unifying development activities across Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. "Unified Wii development" was also listed under this category. Other goals mentioned in the briefing included expanded online development. Capcom aims to sell additional download content for major titles like Super Street Fighter IV and Lost Planet 2. It hopes to increase digital distribution of software. It also looks like we'll be getting a Mega Man Online game, jointly developed by Korea's Neowiz Games. Posted July 29, 2010 Nintendo's Sales and Earnings Fall Nintendo released its quarterly earnings statement today, showing a drop in sales and earnings for the first quarter (April through June). As reason for the drops, the company blamed the appreciation of the yen and the lowering of the DS price. The company did ¥188,646 million in sales over the three month period, down from the ¥253,498 million of the same period last year. Operating income was down from ¥40,401 million to ¥23,342 million. There were some successes for the company over the fiscal period. Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in May, has sold 4.09 million units worldwide. The company also pointed to continued success for Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver and Tomodachi Collection, both of which were released last year. DS sold 3.15 million units over the three months, down sharply from the 5.97 million of the same period last year. The system has now sold 132.04 million units worldwide. Wii saw a gain from last year's 2.23 million units to 3.04 million units, bringing its life to date to 73.97 million units. Both platforms saw drops in software sales for the period. DS software sales fell from last year's 29.09 million units to 22.41 million units. The system has sold a total of 740.93 million pieces of software so far. Wii sold 28.17 million games during the three months, down from the 31.07 million of last year. The system has sold 573 million units since launch. These figures do not include download games. Kotaku = First up, Nintendo continues to see a massive decline in both net sales and operating income, the former down 25% from the same point last year, the latter down 45%. Most importantly, the company actually posted a loss for the quarter of around USD$290 million, a big slide from the same time last year when the company made a USD$480 million profit. You may think this is down to a decline in Wii sales, but it's not; instead, Wii sales actually increased over the same period in 2009, but dips in DS sales, as well as software for both the DS and Wii (not to mention foreign currency fluctuations) accounted for the decline. Sales Figures The big sellers for the quarter were (all figures are worldwide: Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 4 million Wii Sports Resort - 3 million Wii Sports - 2.7 million Wii Fit Plus - 1.8 million Pokemon heartgold/Soulsilver - 1.7 million New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 1.1 million Release Dates You can never take anything to the bank from the release schedules in Nintendo's financial results, because they're never intended to be truly authoritative, but there are still some interesting points of note. - The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which we already figured was coming in 2011 in the West, is listed as "TBA" in Japan (and "2011" for both North America & Europe). Could Nintendo be trying for a Christmas launch for the game in its home territory? - The Last Story, an RPG from Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is listed as "2010" for Japan but is not listed for a Western release, suggesting any such version would be a 2011 title. - Monado: Beginning of the World (ie, Xenoblade): Are you ever coming out over here?
