triforce_keeper Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Ok, my computer can't keep up with everything at the moment, and is struggling. After getting rid of virus' and what not, I still have problems running games and stuff. Heres my spec: I think a good dust in there and a new CPU would do the trick, what do you guys think? Oh and would there be any problems with the motherboard etc? And any suggestions for CPU's?
Skitter2.9 Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Haha, your computer is almost exacly the same as mine :P But you have to figure out what socket your cpu/motherboard is, if its 939 and not AM2 you might as well by a new motherbord and cpu. Atleast in Norway prices for 939 cpus are ridiculously high, its the same as buying a far better cpu, motherboard and ram. Your 7600gt is a little outdated too. But if you don't want to spend that much money may I suggest upgrading to Windoze xp? Edit: DDR ram = 939. DDR2 ram = AM2
Raining_again Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe a 3700+ is a socket 939. I imagine you will have more annoyance getting a 939 socket processor than its worth. EDIT: Well... here are some from ebuyer. In all honesty you wont get much change from a 3700+ to a 4000+. If you can afford towards 150/200ish I suggest a motherboard bundle The above link is just an example and I imagine if you shop around you can get cheaper =)
Skitter2.9 Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 You're right about the 3700+, I didn't know that :p But it would be stupid not to buy a dualcore so I say go for a new motherboard and cpu. But why are you only linking to AMD bundles? Core 2 Duos are far more powerfull.
Ten10 Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Because thats all your system will take unless you change your mobo. You're locked into the brand and series.
DCK Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Core 2 Duos are far more powerfull. Not in that price class, really. AMD still has the edge in the cheap end of the market. Core 2 Duos are going to cost you 100 pounds for the CPU alone.
Skitter2.9 Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Because thats all your system will take unless you change your mobo. You're locked into the brand and series. It was a motherboard bundle
Raining_again Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 It was a motherboard bundle I did look at those first when I read this thread... Because he only wanted to buy a processor.. suggests to me that 1) budget is limited - AMD bundles are cheaper 2) maybe he doesn't necessarily want a huge beast of a processor. Not everyone is a hardcore gamer pc enthusiast. Maybe I'm assuming here but whatever. It's not difficult to click the link to the Intel bundles. Oh by the way just as an added note... If you buy a new motherboard you most certainly will have to format windows again (different architecture) so backup all the stuff you need
triforce_keeper Posted April 26, 2008 Author Posted April 26, 2008 I'm a noob at upgrading, and haven't really got the money tbh. If anyone could link me to a good guide of sorts, it would be a big help And I think I will wait until Spore til I upgrade, but atleast I know what I'm looking for now! Thanks a bunch ^_^
Raining_again Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 That seems to be a pretty comprehensive guide. Most of all just use plenty of care and patience =) Or if you really don't want to fry some expensive parts try an fully assembled motherboard Prices aren't too bad there either.
McPhee Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Out of interest what were you planning to upgrade for? If it's just to speed up general day to day tasks then you could pick up a cheap AM2 motherboard and an X2 3600+ for £60-ish
triforce_keeper Posted April 27, 2008 Author Posted April 27, 2008 Well, I have decided to wait a bit until Spore & Sims 3, so something that could handle those really. And I should get a new Graphics card aswell..... -.- I hate pcs. XD

Could be better to wait a few months or so, let the prices drop a little further.

Oh and while I'm here, I've been having horrible sounds coming from my pc lately, and have to give it a knock to shut it up. And something thats come along with the problem, is when I startup my PC I get an error message saying something like "Your ???? fan has failed to start up" Soooo, I'm guessing it's a fan that's packing up?

Uh. Oh. No wonder your pc has been going slow lately! If its the CPU/processor fan, you will find some major struggles doing anything....
triforce_keeper Posted April 27, 2008 Author Posted April 27, 2008 Uh. Oh. No wonder your pc has been going slow lately! Although startup could be a little faster..
Jackster Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 If your PCs struggling to keep up after a virus then you'd probably be better reinstalling Windows. That used to be what I'd do after a virus, it's a pain in the ass trying to remove every trace of a virus, there's always just enough left behind to slow down your computer.
Raining_again Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 It's only with games I have problems with really, everything else runs fine. Although startup could be a little faster.. Cause they are more process intense yeah, maybe, but its still a problem. Could cause your whole system to die. If its not a major fan...ie not the cpu/graphics, you could *probably* get away with it for a while... I had a PC that didn't have enough fans, and while it worked, it just liked to restart, or BSOD quite frequently. If it is the cpu fan you could be in for trouble sooner rather than later. Try downloading a temp monitoring program, or use the one that came with your motherboard, see what the temps are like.

My comps been playing up a lot more recently, started saying the disk boot failed? Or something like that. Aswell as the "chip fan" =_= I have to bang the case to make it even switch on now. Eurgh :/

I beg to differ, a fan would only be there if it was important ;-) For example the fan on the PSU on my PC died a while ago and you would not believe the smell of burning plastic that come from my computer. Make sure *all* fans are working, it's a safety thing as much as a performance thing.

By "getting away with it" i meant that his computer *probably* wouldn't die instantly. PSU and chip fans are probably the most crucial, being that most of the general activity goes on there. I've had a few PC's in my time, some have had abysmal heating issues, they do work if a little frustrating when they BSOD [safety hat] Don't do that at home kids! Electronics should be safe. YAR! Yes the psu of the pc mentioned in the above sentence actually decided it would give up on me and a pile of smoke came out of it! >_< [/safety hat]
