Marshmellow Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 So I just installed Windows Vista, and I got everything to work which actually surprised me;), except for Audio. First I tried using my onboard Audio which wouldn't work, (It worked in Vista RC1!?) So that kind of confuses me. I've tried installing the drivers from the CD but still doesn't work. Then I tried sticking a Sound Blaster Live! Card which is really old but I thought what the hell might as well try. Which didn't work... So basically I have no Audio at all which really sucks. Is there any way to get these to work somehow. Or am I gonna have to buy a new card, and if I do what are some good ones?
Guest Jordan Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 The CD drivers aren't going to work at all and things aren't going to magically work by plugging them in. You need to go to the companys site that makes your motherboard/onboard soundchip and go to their online drivers page and download the Vista drivers.
Marshmellow Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Just tried that, downloaded the driver they said would work with Windows Vista, but it didn't work... which really makes no sense I'm trying some things from Microsoft Website tried the Add Hardware thing no such luck I just get the Blue Screen wow thats hopeless... They actually call it the "Blue Screen" thats interesting...
Guest Jordan Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Are you using Vista 32bit or 64bit? Also, if you could tell me who makes your motherboard/audio drivers and the model number that'd be helpful.
Marshmellow Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Oh Right Well I'm using 32bit Vista and my motherboard is Asus P5AD2-E Premium which is kind of old... and maybe should just be upgraded all together... but the Audio specifically is made by Realtek.

Ah good Is it Realtek HD audio? If so, my laptop uses that and i can get you the drivers. For the mean time i'll check your motherboard. EDIT: According to Asus, your soundcard is a Cmedia CMI9880L.
Marshmellow Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 It is Realtek HD Audio, Asus's site didn't seem to have any updated drivers... Realtek Download site. if this is the driver your using, thats the one I tried and it didn't really work... I'll try uninstalling it, and reinstalling it though.
Guest Jordan Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Right, you definitly have CMedia audio. I found some Vista beta drivers on their offical forum. Hope this works! http://www.cmedia.com.tw/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1251&sid=64a938ef4bba1cff3be3df194709fe32
Marshmellow Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Is CMedia different than Realtek? If it is sry for leading ya astray there... And I'm downloading the driver now god I hope it works. While were talking about Vista does your little green bar (the one that goes across the screen at startup) ever freeze, because that seems to happen to me sometimes, usually when I add new hardware or whatnot but sometimes just randomly.
Guest Jordan Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Yup, CMedia and Realtek are totaly different companies, but i looked around and you have Cmedia. And yes, sometimes it does. I wouldn't worry as long as you see that lovely Windows logo and sound :p EDIT: So did it work? No thanks?
Marshmellow Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Sry I had to leave for school! I always say thanks! the CMedia Driver had no luck let me totally assess whats happened so far and whats been tried and such so maybe it'll be easier to find the problem. While I had XP Pro 32bit the Asus CD it came with, worked so I installed the driver off that which was a Realtek program. When I switched to Vista Ultimate RC1 32bit I used the same cd except the autoplay thing didn't work and I had to explore the Cd and install it manually so to speak. I realized the CD has drivers for CMedia and Realtek! So I installed the one I used in XP the Realtek one. This worked for RC1. When I switched to the full version of Vista Ultimate I tried installing the driver from the CD again which didn't work. I tried installing the CMedia one which didn't work either. This is when I posted my problem here. So I tried installing the updated Vista driver from the Realtek site. Still didn't work. I tried uninstalling it just in case it had old software still for some reason. Made sure all Realtek drivers were off the my computer. Then reinstalled the Vista version of it. Didn't work still! So then I downloaded the CMedia driver for Vista you found for me. And I get a message saying it doesn't support Vista. (which makes no frickin sense!) Here's a screenshot of the message.
Guest Jordan Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Okay, so reading further into it. CMedia haven't got Vista drivers out yet and don't expect anything in the future. And unless you have a Live LS or 24bit version, theres gunna be no Vista drivers. My advice? Buy a cheap soundblaster Audigy 2, i know those have support since i use Creative's drivers...
Marshmellow Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 I was thinking about it during school today (don't know why i didn't post this, in my last post:D ) but my motherboard/processor is kind of old, and should be replaced anyway so I might put my old hardware on eBay try to get a few bucks back and upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo and a nice 975x chipset. Which would probably be a smart move... Considering I'm using a P4 and a 925x chipset... If I do change my mind I'll probably get one of those cards you mentioned. Well thanks Jordan so much! I always appreciate your help!
Caris Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I gotta back up jordan, im using a X-fi xtreme music with Beta drivers and havent had a problem.

I always appreciate your help! I'm buying this board: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/125082 I know you're in the US, but you should be able to find it. Can't go wrong with an nForce chipset
Sanchez Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I gotta back up jordan, im using a X-fi xtreme music with Beta drivers and havent had a problem. I disagree, I'm using Crative's beta drivers for the same card and im getting high CPU usage, poorer sound quality and random cuts of any sound at all.
Guest Jordan Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I disagree, I'm using Crative's beta drivers for the same card and im getting high CPU usage, poorer sound quality and random cuts of any sound at all. Thats weird. Well they are beta drivers so i wouldn't expect miracles. Vista is quite differently coded in terms of drivers compared to XP.
Sanchez Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Yeah, I wasn't really expecting much, but was at least hoping I could get something stable. It isn't too annoying. My motherboard is a DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR Expert.
Twozzok Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 hmm, are there SoundMax vista drivers out yet? Or will I actually have to plug my headphones into my Sounblaster (effort !_!)
Guest Jordan Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 New creative Vista drivers out lads, get 'em from creative.com auto update.
Sanchez Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Cool, installing them now although the current drivers haven't been bad to me recently. EDIT: I am pleased with the new drivers. The sound is better, CPU usage is back down to 0, the sound doesn't get choppy when coming from 2 sources. Not sure if it's going to continue to cut out occasionally but it's been good so far. Thanks creative, faster next time.
Marshmellow Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 WOOP got my audio to work finally! So one day I see a magazine about Vista... I buy it, read it, and it had a big ol thing on Vista Compatibility and such. So I tried it out and it worked! I finally have Audio with Vista hurrah my vista now is working 100% So for those that are having similar problems all you have to is right click on the driver that you want to install, click on properties. Now click on the combatibility tab and check run this program in combatibility more for: then I chose Windows XP Sp2. And it worked! If you guys already knew this then whatever but thats how I finally got my audio to work I'm so happy:D and the CMedia driver you gave me Jordan is the one i installed so thanks again!
