  1. Because it can soon turn nasty, parents can go over board. I dont believe it should be banned, but there should be very STRICT guidlines on what is acceptable.

I agree with that. There should be guide lines but, it shouldn't be banned.

If it does turn nasty does that not count actual bodily harm and becomes illegal. Even if, it does become banned I doubt it will stop parents from giving the occasional clip.

  2. It's perfectly legal, as is battery. GBH and ABH, however, are illegal.

If you are going to take the most literal sense of the word then I still say there is nothing wrong it.

Getting hit as a kid worked for me and not getting hit as a kid worked for you. The point is, they both worked.

So, why should it be banned?

  3. The only reason it's not currently, in England and Wales, an assault is because they're your own defenceless child.

There is a difference (a massive difference) between discipline and assaulting your own, defenceless child.

Last time I checked assualting your child was illegal.

  4. I was slapped on the wrist as a kid if I done something wrong and I would say it worked.

If you think a slap on the wrist or a clip behind the ear is violent then let's hope you don't get mugged and beaten anytime soon.

  5. Here's a something i just thought of (maybe someone said it already, i haven't read the whole thread)

But if the experiment is trying to recreate the begining of the universe... what if they actually create a "new" Universe, which starts to expand and engulf ours? Maybe this is how our universe started, a bunch of people trying to do a similar experiment and BANG, out they go and here we come. Maybe it's just a never ending cycle of Universe expanding so far until a planet create life and that life create another universe engulfing/destroying the one that came before it.

Or something weird like that....oh noes

    :heh:

It's possible, but saying that there is so many differernt possabilies in life! It could explain why the universe is always expanding though! It is just taking up more space from the universe before!!!

It already happens in space so, I doubt it. Plus the univerese is expanding is supposed to be because of dark energy or something which they have yet to prove. Maybe when they get the LHC up and going we'll find out why.

  6. I honestly don't think the problem is hype. Twilight Princess was an overworked painting rather than being a simple game with a great atmosphere. I think the reviews that scored it between 8.8 and 9.2 were right.

Anyway, who hyped it? I seem to remember Nintendo whipping up a frenzy about it since 2004! But like I say, hype's not to blame. It was just about 5-10% less good than one expects from a console Zelda, that's all.

While that is true, no matter how good a game is, you will be disapointed with it if, you expect to much. I think I would have enjoyed it more if, I hadn't looked up so much stuff on it.

  7. Huh? My theory? Correct me if i'm wrong, but I wasn't stating anything, I just said what I've heard. After all, this forum is not the spot for scientists.

But IF the potential black holes are so small, why does that microscopical chance of DOOMSDAY exist? Even CERN admits that it does. That's what I don't understand.

Maybe because something else will fuck up? I couldn't honestly tell you.

  8. Hear, hear, I've also searched for reliable information. I don't know if the Hawkings radiation is the only thing that can prevent black holes from growing. The idea about the ultra small ones that never get a change to grow am I also familiar with, but then, I don't know if that's two versions of the same theory, where the latter just doesn't mention the Hawkings radiation. Hm!

I'm sure it is. I remember reading something about it but it was late and I probably didn't process half of it. I even heard he would get a Nobel Prize if, it turns out to be true.

  9. And the Hawkings radiation that is supposed to neutralize the "false" black holes is only abstract talk, something that hasn't been proven.

But hey, if something bad is gonna happen, we won't be there to see it!

First of all how big does everyone think this black hole is going to be? I was under the impression that it would be so small that nothing would happen unless you tried to grab one. Only then would you kiss your arse goodbye.

I really wish I knew why people would consider the world to have ended today. I'm not talking about people here, mainly the media. It's probably just for the sales though. In fact I have The Sun here. Let me quote it.

If you are reading this after 8:30am it means the world has not been destoyed by the Big Bang Machine . . . YET.

Scientists were due to switch on the Large Hadron Collider. But the first high-energy collisions are not due untill October 21st

Now if they knew this then we was all over the papers and the radio that the world was ending today? Simple. They are more or less printing money.

The point of my post? Don't believe everything the media tell you. If it concerns you enough then do a bit of research. Hell, wiki is probably a more reliable source than the media.

  10. While I more than likely ruined TP for myself by over hype, I still believe it could have been better. It was in no means a horrible game but, I agree with Rummy. The first couple of trailers of it don't even seem to be present in the game but, I won't go into that now as this is not the thread for it.

I have complete faith in Nintendo this time. Even if I over hype it again, simply because they have said they will build it from the ground up.

  11. Having skimmed this thread and realised I don't know if i'm trapped in a never-ending death throw of repeating N-E forum posting, can anyone give a break down of what this whole shebang means? Is it an energy creator or something?

Yeah, the importance of the LHC totally goes over my head, I wish someone could explain in simple terms.

It is to observe what happened microseconds after the big bang. They believe they will find anti-matter/dark matter and prove theories like the Higgs boson.

So does this mean that all our theories of science are built upon something unobserved and blind faith, rather much like the religion that a number of scientists choose to criticise? I still like science, I still have faith in science, maths, numbers and logic, but a while back part of me DID lose faith in some of the advanced physics, possibly because I couldn't understand it. How is it that in a world so full of science and technology, we have non-observed phenomena holding together all our theories?

(This question is semi-serious, I actually don't get how it came about to be like this)

The reason they can't observe it is because it was meant to only exist at the begining of the big bang and somehow doesn't now.

    ...

Tigers can't be compared to black holes. Why would you even try to?

And yeah, I'm inherently selfish, preserve my own life.

I would assume he meant nothing ventured, nothing gained.

  12. So if the world does end tomorrow, I won't even get to see my gf for one last time. Great. ¬¬

I imagine you would as it isn't happening tomorrow. The actual experiment will happen in October (I think). The whole 'the world is gonna end tomorrow' is just the media fabricationg the truth.

  13. The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out on 8-11 August 2008' date=' the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for 10 September 2008, at 7:30 GMT and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.[/quote']

So we might be waiting a while if this is correct.
