UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 41, 2010

 

EA’s reboot of ‘Medal of Honor’ debuts at No1 in the All Formats Entertainment Chart giving the big US publisher the top 2 titles with ‘FIFA 11’ (-65%) relegated to second place.

 

It’s the biggest ever launch week for a Medal of Honor title with 52% of sales on Xbox 360, 43% on PS3 and 5% on PC. It’s also the 4th biggest launch week for an Xbox 360 title in 2010 and 5th biggest in 2010 on PS3. ‘Just Dance 2’, the sequel to the biggest selling game (on one format) so far in 2010, starts life at No3, pushing Ubisoft’s original game out of the Top 10 for only the 7th time since its release, down from No9 to No12. A big marketing push helps Nintendo’s ‘Wii Party’ (+298%) enjoy a strong second week, up from No10 to No4 – Nintendo’s highest chart position since ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’ reached No3 15 weeks ago. ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2011’ (-59%) falls from No2 to No5, but Konami still have 2 games in the Top 10 with ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’ (-40%) holding on, despite a slip from No6 to No10. Codemasters’ ‘F1 2010’ (-35%) drops from No4 to No6, ahead of ‘Dead Rising 2’ (-38%) by only a small margin. ‘Halo: Reach’ (-37%) falls 3 places to No8, while Namco Bandai just miss out on 2 top 10 titles as ‘Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2’ debuts at No9, ahead of fellow Namco Bandai title ‘Enslaved: Odyssey to the West’ (-39%) which drops out of the Top 10, falling from No7 to No11. The only other new entry to make the Top 40 this week is 2KGames’ ‘Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition’ at No35.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 42, 2010

Bethesda’s ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ is the new No1, comfortably beating Bethesda’s previous record holder ‘Fallout 3’ which debuted at No1 in week 44, 2008 (up 29% units over the previous title).

 

EA’s reboot of ‘Medal of Honor’ (-48%) drops down to No2 and EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ also drops one place to No3 (-30%). The next new entry this week is Nintendo’s DS ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ at No4, followed at No5 by Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+39%). Also new at No12 is Sega’s ‘Vanquish’, EA’s ‘EA Sports MMA’ at No23 and Activision Blizzard’s ‘DJ Hero 2’ at No25.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 43, 2010

 

Microsoft’s ‘Fable III’ begins life at the top of the All Formats Chart this week, deposing ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (-55%), which slips to No3.

 

The highly anticipated sequel from UK developer Lionhead Studios outsells the launch week of ‘Fable II’ by around 6,000 units making it the 13th biggest Xbox 360 launch ever and the 4th biggest Xbox 360 launch of 2010. It is Microsoft’s 3rd All Formats No1 so far in 2010 (after Crackdown 2 and Halo: Reach). There was only 1 Microsoft title last year that reached No1 in the All Formats Chart (Halo 3: ODST). ‘FIFA 11’ (+10%) rises one place to No2, while Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+2%) also manages to climb one place, up to No4. The next highest new entry is ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II’ at No5. The original title debuted at No1 back in W38 2008. EA’s ‘Medal of Honor’ (-53%) falls 4 places to No6, ahead of this weeks 3rd highest new entry ‘WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2011’, new at No7.

 

Nintendo’s highest charting game remains ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ (-23%) despite a drop of 4 places to No8, while EA can now claim 3 Top 10 titles as the release of ‘The Sims 3’ (+999%) on next-gen formats propels it back into the chart at No9. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2011’ holds on to its position on the Top 10, down one place to No10, helped by a healthy 93% increase in sales. The Sims is also at No15 this week thanks to the release of PC expansion ‘The Sims 3: Late Night’. There are also new entries for EA’s ‘Rock Band 3’ at No26 and ‘The X-Factor’ from Deep Silver/Koch at No37.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 44, 2010

Sega score their second No1 this year with ‘Football Manager 2011’, marking this year’s second PC exclusive title to reach the top (the other being Starcraft II).

 

EA follow with their non-mover ‘FIFA 11’(-24%) at No2 and last week’s No1, Microcoft’s ‘Fable III’(-64%), is now at No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (-22%) stays in the groove at No4 and Nintendo’s ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ (-35%) is up from No8 to No5. It’s Nintendo again at No6 with ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (+99%) back in the chart thanks to the release of the 25th Anniversary Red Nintendo Wii bundle. Bethesda’s ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (-59%) loses it’s steak, moving down from No3 to No7, and EA’s FPS ‘Medal of Honor’ (-44%) takes cover, down to No8. LucasArts’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II’ (-52%) is down from No5 to No9 and EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ (-22%) rounds off the Top 10.

 

It’s the calm before the storm with next week’s release of both Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty Black Ops’ and Microsoft’s Kinect. However, Activision do have two James Bond titles out this week, the Wii revamp of N64’s legendary ‘Goldeneye 007’ has debuted at No13, and ‘007: Blood Stone’ in at No18, which is the first game since ‘Everything or Nothing’ to have an original story.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 45, 2010

 

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (360/PS3/PC/Wii/DS) explodes into the All Formats Chart and is by far the biggest ever launch of any game, recording a staggering 2m units in the UK over 5 days and generating an estimated £81.9m.

 

This is up 13% in units over previous record breaker ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (1.8m) and up 21% in terms of revenue (£67.4m for MW2). To put this in context, Activision’s title grossed more than the entire UK entertainment software market over the previous two weeks combined. Week 45, 2010 becomes the biggest grossing week of all time (£113.8m total UK entertainment software market estimate) – the previous best was £107.6m back in week 52, 2008. The Xbox 360 version of ‘Black Ops’ is the lead format with 55% of units, ahead of PS3 which takes 42%.

 

 

Also new this week is Microsoft’s Kinect and for more information on the Kinect Sensor please refer to our weekly Motion Controller Report, which tracks MotionPlus, Move and now Kinect side by side. In terms of the 11 Kinect launch titles, eight of them debut in the Top 40. Lead title and the next biggest release after ‘Black Ops’ is Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ at No4 followed at No13 by Microsoft’s ‘Dance Central’ and at No15 by Ubisoft’s ‘Motion Sports’.

GoldenEye's doing surprisingly well, considering several versions of Black Ops and a shit load of Kinect games released this week. It, on its second week, outperformed Black Ops on Wii, which always does remarkably well - a little fact oft under-appreciated.

 

Time will tell which will have stronger legs. Black Ops has the Call of Duty brand behind it, and I think it's very over-stated how much weight the GoldenEye name carries thirteen years on. Then again, I think the incredibly warm critical reception of GoldenEye made more of an impact of 'surprise' than the general approval of Black Ops, which was kind of a given, given Treyarch's admirable competency on Wii.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 46, 2010

 

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ holds on to the top spot this week despite an 85% drop in sales, forcing Ubisoft to settle for a No2 debut with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’.

 

After its blockbuster launch, only 63,000 sales now separates Black Ops from ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’, making it the biggest ever Assassin’s Creed launch with 55% of sales on Xbox 360 and 45% on PS3. ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ is the only other Top 10 new entry this week, new at No3. EA’s other new entry, ‘Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows – Part 1’ can only summon up a debut of No20. However, EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ is still a star player despite making way for the new releases, down 2 places to No4. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ is also looking healthy despite falling 2 places to No5. The rest of the Top 10 is dominated by Nintendo thanks to a strong performance from ‘Wii Party’ up from No12 to No6 and ‘Wii Sports Resort’, which returns to the Top 10 at No7, aided by a retailer promotion on the Wii hardware bundle. ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ is down 2 places to No8, ahead of ‘Kinect Sports’ at No9. With ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ down 2 places to No10, Nintendo now have 4 games in the Top 10.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 47, 2010

 

Sony’s long awaited ‘Gran Turismo 5’ starts the race in pole position. It’s been over five years since the previous iteration (released on PS2 in week 10 2005) and over two and a half years since the sneak peek ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’.

 

Benefitting from a Wednesday release Gran Turismo 5 achieves the 6th largest PS3 launch week and is 6% up on Gran Turismo 4 launch week sales. Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-42%) has therefore been demoted to No2 and Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-32%) also falls one place to No3. EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+76%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+24%) hold their positions at No4 and No5 respectively, overtaking EA’s racing title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+2%) which has slipped down the grid to No6. Nintendo claim the next three positions with ‘Wii Party’ (+63%), ‘Art Academy’ (+220%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+1%) at No7, No8 and No9, with ‘Art Academy’ seeing the highest rise in the chart from No27 to No8, boosted by TV advertising.

 

Bethesda Softworks’ ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (+97%) is back in the Top 10 this week, up from No13 to No10. Outside of the Top 10 we have a zombie take on Rockstar/Take 2’s western with ‘Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare’ debuting at No14 and Ubisoft’s ‘Michael Jackson: The Experience’ at No32.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 48, 2010

It’s a return to business as usual for Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-6%), up from No2 to take a 3rd week at No1 on the Entertainment Software All Formats Top 40 after the ‘GT5’ effect last week.

 

EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ moves up 2 places to No2 (+7%), Ubisoft remain at No3 with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-27%) and Sony’s aforementioned PS3 ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-61%) drops from No1 to No4 after huge week 1 sales and actually remains the biggest seller in terms of individual SKU’s for a second successive week. It’s a Nintendo Wii week overall as Wii software units outsell all other formats for the first time since Easter back in week 14, 2010. Aside from Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ for Wii selling more as the weeks go by (No5 / +12%), Ubisoft’s ‘Michael Jackson: The Experience’ climbs from No32 to No6 (99% Wii / +401%) and Nintendo’s ‘Wii Party’ is at No8 (-0%) with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ climbing 4 places to No9 (+90%). Also helping to propel Wii software to the top of the heap are the only 2 new releases within the Top 40 this week – Nintendo’s ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’ at No13 and ‘Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary’ at No22.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 49, 2010

Only one week to go until the official Entertainment Software Christmas Chart and ‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops’ (+2%) puts newcomer ‘World of Warcraft: Cataclysm’ in the shade by holding on to the top spot.

 

Activision-Blizzard are denied the top 2 places by a strong showing from EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+15%) which also holds on to its position, a non-mover at No2. The highly anticipated expansion to ‘World of Warcraft’ has to settle for a debut at No3 with the biggest launch for a PC title this year. It is the first time a World of Warcraft expansion has been available at launch as both a digital download and official retail release. Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-3%) and Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-2%) both make way for Warcraft, dropping one place to Nos 4 and 5 respectively. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (+22%) hasn’t lost its groove, despite falling one place to No6, ahead of EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+46%) which holds on to No7.

 

Nintendo occupy the last 3 places in the Top 10 as this week’s biggest climber ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’ (+68%) bounds into the Top 10, up 5 places to No8, becoming Nintendo’s biggest selling title this week, ahead of ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ (+27%) at No9 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+22%) at No10.

Up next are two regular Christmas No1 contenders, both from EA, with ‘FIFA 11’ (-1%) at No2 closely pursued by ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+48%) which has accelerated up the grid from No7 to No3. We then have two very different games from Ubisoft with ‘Just Dance 2’ (+15%) at No4 and ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-6%) at No5. There is another racer at No6 with Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-4%) and swinging in at No7 is Nintendo’s ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns’ (-13%). At No8 another EA title, ‘Medal of Honor’ (+15%) fights its way up the chart, back into the Top 10.

 

Rounding off the Top 10 there are two Nintendo titles - ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+0%) at No9 and ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ (-13%) at No10.

The penultimate chart of the year remains headed by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+13%) having claimed 6 weeks out of 7 so far since launch (‘Gran Turismo 5’ claimed one week at the top back in week 47).

 

Entertainment Software sales only climb 5% in units/value over last week which means that in terms of units the market is the biggest this year (but only 442 units up over the ‘Black Ops’ inspired previous biggest week of 2010 back in week 45) and second biggest this year in terms of revenue (behind week 45, some £28m short of that all time record-breaking week). As you would expect there is little change over last week with EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ at No2 (+27%) and EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ at No3 (-8%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ remains at No4 (+4%) and Ubisoft also remain at No5 with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (+0%). 3 titles re-enter the Top 10 and they are EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ up 6 places to No7 (+32%), Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ up 7 places to No8 (+25%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Michael Jackson: The Experience’ up 3 places to No9 (+13%). 2 older titles enter the Top 40 for the first time, the promoted Wii/360/PS3 ‘Monopoly Streets’ from EA at No28 (+76% / released in week 44, 2010) and Ubisoft’s Wii ‘Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time’ at No29 (+51% / released in week 47, 2010).

‘FIFA 11’ (-39%) shoots down ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-45%) in the last week of the year, denying Activision-Blizzard a 7th week at No1. However, six weeks at No1 is still the most for any game in 2010.

 

It was a different story in 2009 for ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ which stayed at No1 for the 8 weeks from launch until the end of the year, while ‘Black Ops’ has been usurped twice, by ‘Gran Turismo 5’ in W47 and now ‘FIFA 11’. There is no change in the next 3 places as ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (-26%), ‘Just Dance 2’ (-33%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-34%) are all non-movers at No’s 3, 4 and 5 respectively. It is the first time two or more Kinect titles have broken into the Top 10 as ‘Kinect Sports’ (-13%) moves up 2 places to No6, joined in the Top 10 by ‘Dance Central’ (+21%) which bounces up 9 places from No19 to No10. Previous chart toppers ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-40%), ‘The Sims 3’ (-21%) and ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (-27%) all end the year in the Top 10 at No’s 7, 8 and 9 respectively.

 

There are five Kinect games in the Top 40 this week, the most since Kinect’s launch (when there were eight). It is a good week for Microsoft’s new technology with sales from these five charting Kinect games almost as much as the total from the eight that charted at launch week.

Best selling games of 2010:

 

Call of Duty: Black Ops has continued to set new records since its release in November last year, grossing more than £113.8 million in its first week of sales, the biggest grossing week of all time for video games software. Ubisoft also had a strong year, with Just Dance, Just Dance 2 and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood all featuring in the year’s best-selling All Format chart, alongside two games from Nintendo.

 

FIFA 11 remained popular with UK gamers in 2010, finishing second in the All Formats Chart and achieving a top two place on the PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as finishing the year as the best selling game on the PSP. As well as reaching number 3 in the All-Formats chart, Just Dance was the best selling Wii game of 2010. The Number One seller of the Nintendo DS chart was Professor Layton and the Lost Future, replicating last year’s success for Professor Layton and the Lost Village.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 1, 2011

 

EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (-50%) kicks off the New Year staying top of the table, giving it a total of four weeks at No1.

 

Ubisoft’s sequel ‘Just Dance 2’ (-45%) steps up the chart from No4 to No2, which marks it’s highest ever position, meaning that Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-60%) has lost ground down at No3, the first time it’s not been in the Top 2 since its launch. EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (-67%) slips down the grid to No4 followed by a return to the Top 10 for Nintendo’s fitness title ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-10%) at No5 (the New Year’s resolution effect). Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-64%) moves down to No6 with Sony’s racing title ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-55%) stuck in neutral at No7. Bethesda’s ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ (-46%) and EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ (-59%) swap places at No8 and No9 respectively. Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ (-62%) rounds off the Top 10 down from No6 and there are no new entries yet for 2011.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 2, 2011

 

Activision Blizzard re-claim top spot with ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ gaining a 7th week at No1 (-35%).

 

EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ held the last 2 weeks (a total of 4 No1’s on this chart since launch) and now drops to No2 (-52%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ drops one place to No3 (-44%) and Nintendo climb one place to No4 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-15%). Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports’ jumps 5 places to No5 (-21%) and remains by far the most popular of the Kinect titles available (excluding Kinect Adventures which is bundled with the Kinect Sensor). The first new entry of the year to grace the Top 40 is Sony’s online-only ‘DC Universe Online’ in at No10 on PS3 & PC. In terms of PS3 online multiplayer only titles available at retail this is only the 4th title to be released – the others are ‘Warhawk’ (2007), ‘Socom: US Navy Seals Confrontation’ (2008) and ‘MAG’ (2010).

Sony’s ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ slays the mighty goliath that is ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ to debut at No1.

 

Developed by UK studio Media Molecule, ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ is the first in the franchise to achieve top spot in the All Formats Chart. The original PS3 game which launched to much acclaim back in week 45 2008 could only manage No4. Launch week sales of the first and second LittleBigPlanet games are almost identical with the latest game only 95 sales short of the original. ‘Black Ops’ (-15%) has to settle for No2, ahead of ‘Just Dance 2’ (-19%) which is a non-mover at No3. ‘FIFA 11’ (-25%) remains EA’s top selling title this week, despite dropping two places to No4. The launch of EA’s ‘Mass Effect 2’ (+462%) on PS3 can’t propel it ahead of FIFA as it re-enters the Top 40 at No7. Competitive retailer pricing on ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (+22%) help push it up two places to No5, while the post Christmas fitness drive shows signs of flagging with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-28%) down two places to No6.

 

The Top 10 is rounded off with ‘Kinect Sports’ (-27%) down three places to No8, ‘Gran Turismo 5’ (-30%) down one place to No9 and ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (-35%) dropping four places to No10.

This week is very similar to last week with the only new release in the chart being a sequel that’s gone straight in at No1 and this time it’s with EA’s ‘Dead Space 2’, continuing the trend of a different No1 for every week of 2011.

 

This sequel however sees a 70% increase in launch sales compared to the original ‘Dead Space’ game which debuted at No6 and was released in week 43 2008 (two weeks before the original LittleBigPlanet). This means that Sony’s ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ (-48%) has dropped down a level to No2 followed by the second of three EA titles in the Top 10, ‘FIFA 11’ (+21%), at No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (+18%) continues to sneak up the chart at No4, holding off Activision Blizzard’s FPS ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+11%) at No5. Ubisoft’s chart regular ‘Just Dance 2’ (-14%) falls three places to No6 whereas EA’s third Top 10 title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ (+19%) does the opposite, accelerating up three places to No7.

 

Nintendo hold No8 and No9 with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-25%) and ‘Art Academy’ (+38%) and Ubisoft’s original dance sensation, ‘Just Dance’ (+1%), returns to the Top 10 at No10.

This week sees EA’s ‘Dead Space 2’ at No1 for a second consecutive week (-47%) with EA holding 4 of the Top 10 (up from 3 last week).

 

Up one place to No2 is EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+28%) and also up one at No3 is Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-5%). Activision Blizzard drop one place to No4 with ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-12%) and Sony drop 3 places to No5 with ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ (-56%). Ubisoft remain at No6 with ‘Just Dance 2’ (-14%) and EA’s third Top 10 title ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ is also a non-mover at No7 (+16%). Nintendo’s ‘Art Academy’ on DS climbs one place to No8 (-1%) and EA’s ‘The Sims 3’ re-enters the Top 10, up 4 places to No9 (+11%). Nintendo then take the next 3 positions with ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No10 (-25%) followed by 2 new releases: ‘Mario Vs Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem’ for DS debuts at No11 and ‘Mario Sports Mix’ for Wii is new at No12.

 

The only other new release to make the Top 40 this week is EA’s ‘The Sims 3: Outdoor Living Stuff’ at No25 which is the 7th add-on/expansion and helps to explain why ‘The Sims 3’ broke back into the Top 10 this week.

‘Test Drive Unlimited 2’ steers its way to the top this week to become Namco Bandai’s first ever All Formats No1 after its acquisition of Atari Europe. It is over three and a half years since the first ‘Test Drive Unlimited’ with the Test Drive franchise itself dating back to 1987. TDU2 is by far the biggest launch in the franchise, outselling the launch of the previous title by more than double while adding popular new online community MMO style features. 68% of the launch week sales of TDU2 were on Xbox 360, 28% on PS3 and the rest on PC. ‘Dead Space 2’s two week reign at the top comes to an end as it falls to No2 (-51%), followed by fellow EA’s chart topper ‘FIFA 11’ (-47%) which also drops one place to No3. ‘Black Ops’ (-14%) just holds on to No4 ahead of ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-26%) which slips two places to No5. Nintendo’s Mario games which were launched the previous week, both bound into the Top 10 with DS title ‘Mario Vs Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!’ (+72%) climbing 5 places to No6 and Wii game ‘Mario Sports Mix’ (+47%) up 4 places to No8. UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 7, 2011

 

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ regroups this week with an impressive 192% increase in sales and returns to the top spot after a four week absence, giving it a total of 8 weeks at No1 (now only one less than Modern Warfare 2’s nine).

 

This means that Capcom’s new release ‘Marvel VS Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds’ has to settle for second place. Capcom shouldn’t be too perturbed though as the third iteration has sold nearly as many copies in one week as it’s predecessor did (on PS2 and Xbox) in its entire lifetime (Marvel VS Capcom 2 was released on PS2 and Xbox way back in week 48 2002 and debuted 183rd in the chart). With no other new releases making the chart, the rest of the Top 10 shuffles about with EA’s ‘Dead Space 2’ (+61%) down one place to No3 and last week’s No1, Atari/Namco’s ‘Test Drive Unlimited 2’ falling down the grid to No4. No5 is held by EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (+44%) while No6 and No7 are Ubisoft titles ‘Just Dance 2’ (+74%) and ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’ (-10%). Nintendo’s ‘Mario Vs Donkey Kong: Mini-land Mayhem!’ (-32%) moves down two to No8, while No9 and No10 are non-movers with Rockstar/Take2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Complete Edition’ (-6%) and Sony’s ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ (-3%).

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 8, 2011

It’s ‘First Person Shooter Week’ for half-term as Sony’s Netherlands-based Guerrilla Games’ ‘Killzone 3’ on PS3 (3D compatible, Move enabled) drops straight in at No1 exactly 2 years after ‘Killzone 2’ (the first PS3 version) –which remains the highlight of this series in terms of week 1 sell-through.

 

Original ‘Killzone’ debuted way back in week 48, 2004 on PS2. The current version is the 14th fastest-selling Sony title (in terms of week 1 CT panel units), compared to ‘Killzone 2’, currently Sony’s 5th week 1 best-seller. This is Sony’s 2nd All Formats No1 this year, after ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’ on PS3 back in week 3, which showed similar week 1 sell-through to ‘Killzone 3’. It will be interesting to compare these 2 as the weeks go by in order to see how overall cumulative UK sales compare. EA’s ‘Bulletstorm’ (360/PS3/PC) gives ‘Killzone 3’ a good run for its money, debuting right behind at No2 although admittedly over 3 formats. The game is by the teams that developed ‘Gears of War’ (Epic Games) and ‘Painkiller’ (People Can Fly) and marks a 3rd No1 so far this year for EA (FIFA 11 in week 1, Dead Space 2 in weeks 4&5).

 

Elsewhere in the charts, half-term promotional activity sees Activision Blizzard’s ‘World of Warcraft: Battle Chest’ re-enter at No24, also affecting other titles, but notably Sega’s ‘Sonic Colours’, re-entering at No31.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 9, 2011

 

Nintendo storm the top of the charts this week in what is by far the biggest ever launch of Pokemon games across one weekend in the UK.

 

‘Pokemon White Version’ becomes the 2nd fastest selling DS game ever (behind Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box), debuting at No1, 13,000 sales ahead of sister title ‘Pokemon Black Version’ which enters at No2. If you combine their sales together they become Nintendo’s third biggest ever UK launch (behind Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii). Last week’s No1 ‘Killzone 3’ (-58%) falls down to No5, making way for both Pokemons as well as EA’s latest boxing title ‘Fight Night Champion’, new at No3, ahead of EA’s ‘Bulletstorm’ (-46%) which slips from No2 to No4. In the wake of half-term week, sales across all games in the Top 20 are down with ‘Black Ops’ (-54%) falling from No3 to No6 (its lowest ever chart position), while ‘Just Dance 2’ only falls 2 places to No7 with a respectable 20% drop in sales. EA and Nintendo occupy the remaining positions in the Top 10 with ‘FIFA 11’ (-40%) and ‘Dead Space 2’ (-59%) at No’s 8 and 9 and ‘Wii Party’ (-43%) at No10. There are not only new entries in the Top 10; two new PC titles also make the cut with THQ’s ‘Dawn of War II: Retribution’ launching at No17 and the MMORPG ‘Rift’ from newcomer Trion Worlds debuting at No19.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 10, 2011

Another RPG takes the top spot this week with EA’s ‘Dragon Age II’ swooping in to take No1. This marks EA’s third title to hit No1 so far this year (FIFA 11 and Dead Space 2 are the other two).

 

Xbox 360 drives the sales with a 57% share compared to PS3 at 22% and PC at 21%. This means that Nintendo’s ‘Pokémon White Version’ ( -50%) is now at No2 with EA’s ‘Fight Night Champion’ (-36%) holding No3, sandwiched between the other Pokémon title ‘Pokémon Black Version’ (-47%). Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ (-12%) is back at No5 this week followed by two FPS titles, EA’s ‘Bulletstorm’ (-54%) and Sony’s ‘Killzone 3’ (-50%). EA’s fourth title in the Top 10 is ‘FIFA 11’ (-46%) at No8 and Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-64%) drops another three places to No9. THQ’s ‘uDraw Studio’ (+333%) which comes bundled with the uDraw tablet has jumped up the chart in its second week of launch, up from No83 to finish off the Top 10 at No10.

UK TOP 40 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE - Week 11, 2011

 

THQ claim No1 on the All Formats chart for the first time since week 22, 2009 (UFC 2009: Undisputed) with a shiny new FPS called ‘HomeFront’ from Kaos Studios (360/PS3/PC).

 

Those with long memories might remember Kaos’ first boxed release ‘Frontlines: Fuel of War’ on 360/PC which debuted at No4 in week 9, 2008. On Xbox 360 ‘HomeFront’ is certainly performing well considering that in week 1 in the UK it manages to sell around 82% of what Frontlines on 360 achieved over 3 years. EA’s ‘Dragon Age II’ drops to No2 (-68%) and Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon White’ also drops one place to No3 (-47%). Sega’s PC ‘Shogun 2: Total War’ by Creative Assembly debuts strongly at No4 and was in fact a Tuesday release in week 11. Such was the demand for this title (if you were a fan of ‘Shogun: Total War’ you have only had to wait 11 years for this sequel) that almost 80% of retail boxed sales were made in the first 24 hours.

 

Also new this week is 2K Sports/Take 2’s ‘Top Spin 4’ on 360/PS3/Wii which debuts at No13, the previous iteration debuted one place higher at No12 back in week 25, 2008. The final new entry this week is Sega’s ‘Yakuza 4’ on PS3, debuting at No25, with previous iteration also debuting one place higher at No24 back in week 10, 2010.
