Aimless Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I realise I'm not giving much information, but I'm asking on behalf of a friend, and one who's computer I can't rummage around in myself. As such I'm not really asking for a definite fix to the problem, more if anyone could give me some pointers. Lately she's been having problems with IE*, Media Player, and Messenger. It seems that these programs tend to hang and not respond, but others running at the same time — Firefox, WoW — aren't affected. I was thinking that the problem might lie in some shared architecture between these three Microsoft products, or that it might be a virus/malware that expressly targets this software. I'm trying to Google an answer, but no luck so far. If anyone has any useful information then that would be great. *Yes, I know, Firefox/Opera brigade. She's switched now.
Ginger_Chris Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I'm guessing she has a virus scanner and ad blocker (like AVG and Ad-aware). Are the virus definitions up to date (else virus scanners useless). If shes using norton, id recommend just getting rid of it, its more than likely past the free trial and useless. Make sure shes up to date with all windows updates, all installed. Could try reinstalling these three programs and reinstalling, mayby a shared file got corrupted. Also perform general maintainance, defrag, disk cleanup. Run scandisk on all drives (requires restart), maybe that might turn something up. By the sounds of your post you've probably already done most of that. So if it still doesnt work: trillian>msn firefox>IE and theres plenty of media players out there begging to take WMP's place (linux>windows :P) Hopefully someone else might give more specific help.
