edza Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi all, I wasn't planning (financially) to get the WiiU until my March paycheck but someone in the xmas work do won one and offered it to me today for 200. It's the Premium Nintendoland pack and well, he hasn't even opened it as he's not a gamer so it's too good an offer to pass up. I'll be getting BlackOps2 in March though (with headset) so Nintendoland is the only game I'll have until then. Anyhoooo.... I'm bringing it home tomorrow night and need to fill my head with all of your tips and tricks with regard to the first setup. Few questions so far: I have a projector in the room I'm putting it in (hdmi & component inputs) with a separate sound system that comprises of the need for av red/white inputs (my amp blew a while back so I'm making do with this for now). 1) If I hook up the hdmi, is there any way of using the av cables to carry the sound? 2) If I use the component cable, do I get full 1080p? (projector supports 1080p natively). 3) What's the first thing I do when I open the box and plug everything in? 4) What order do I do the system update/wii transfer and any tips etc after experiencing it? 5) What do I need to back up from my Wii that won't be transferred? 6) Is the Wii pretty useless or worth hanging on to after the transfer? 7) Is playing Wii games on the Wii U system the same or different? 8) Is Nintendoland any good in the long term and what's the best game? 9) Do you use the non-game features as much as you would on the 3DS? I was addicted to Letterbox and every other thing about that system and am hoping that I'll have the same type of fun on the WiiU. 10) Any other nuggets of knowledge? Cheers all and looking forward to seeing you all soon! (I'm also getting a new car tomorrow but I'm more excited about this )
Dcubed Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) If you use HDMI, you can't use the AV port to carry sound. No way around it. The Component cable should be capable of carrying 1080p just fine, but you won't get any surround sound. The absolute only way to get 5.1 sound from the Wii U is to hook it directly to your Reciever via HDMI (using 5.1 PCM. Dolby Digital or DTS is not supported and no, an optical splitter won't work either) The first thing you'll do is set up the video and sound settings, then you'll set up your TV remote control with the Gamepad, then you're Internet connection, then you'll create your Nintendo ID, then you'll do a system update (other options to set up are optional). After that you'll be plonked into the Wii U menu to go about your business (though certain games will have updates of their own to download automatically when you go to start them) As for the Wii transfer, the only thing to really be concerned about is that you can't use GCN controllers on the Wii U, so any game that allows for GCN controller use will lose support for it (most notably, VC games, SSBB and Bomberman Blast - the latter of which will lose 8 player support with the lack of GCN controller support for the other 4 players). Otherwise, there's no reason to keep the Wii around (unless you want to use it to play GCN games!) Nintendo Land is fuck awesome and so is the Internet Browser (the latter of which has pretty much completely replaced my iPad and iPhone as my "go-to" handheld browser at home ) Like Letterbox, Miiverse is also hilariously addictive. Already spent many hours chatting away on there and marvelling at the amazing pictures people draw! Otherwise, kick back and just enjoy it! I would recommend mate to get it before March if you can, by end of March most of us will be buried deep in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Unless you wanna get that one too ) EDIT Oh and big congrats on getting such a sweet deal in getting a Wii U. When you have it set up and got your NNID don't forget to add us all
edza Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 When you have it set up and got your NNID don't forget to add us all I'll be adding everyone on this site well into tomorrow night I can assure you! The absolute only way to get 5.1 sound from the Wii U is to hook it directly to your Reciever via HDMI (using 5.1 PCM. Dolby Digital or DTS is not supported and no, an optical splitter won't work either) I've two huge old speakers from the eighties that have their own base (anyone remember valve amps for guitars back in the day?) so 5.1 or even 7.1 (the eventual Onkyo 616 system I'll be getting) isn't an option yet. Cheers a mill for the tips!
Mokong Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 oh when adding people, DON'T do it through the Friend List, or everyone you add will have to add you manually. Add people through Miiverse so you can send proper friend requests. When you have your Miiverse set up just press "profile" in top left corner, then "search users" type in the NNID you're lookin for, when you find their Miiverse Profile click Send Friend Request. They'll get the request notification next time they open either Miiverse or friend list
Kagato Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Just a quick tip too, when you launch Nintendoland and get the update thing pop up tell it no, it will then go download in the background instead and allow you to play the game straight away. Its not explained anywhere that you can do that but if did it so far for ZombiU, Mario bros, Sonic and Sega all stars and Black Ops 2. You wont be able to play online until the patch for each game has gone through but it does let you have a go on single player whilst you wait.
