As you know, I've been angry with Nintendo for still not releaseing a competitor to Gran Turismo.

Just now I saw this demo on the GC, so I wonder: was there perhaps something such in the works?

Interresting find.

Not sure if it's just a Tech Demo.

Two of the cars were the Ferrari F50 and the other was a Dodge Viper. Would Nintendo go through the hassle of geting real car licenses (Ferrari are from my understanding notoriously expensive and difficult to get in your game) just for a single demo video?

And beyond that, back in the day, Gran Turismo was a system seller unlike any other. I think there might actually have been a racer in the works at Nintendo.

I've never heard of any sort of realistic racer in development at Nintendo, or any of their second party studios.

My guess is that it was a graphics tech demo and nothing more.

While googling, I found that earlier this year, there was a broadspread rumor about Nintendo working with Lucid Dreams to create a GT-competitor called "Concept Grand Prix".

Why hasn't this at all been lifted on this page? If true, this is amazing news.

Because that rumour is for a supposed upcoming Wii U game, not a GCN one. It's not relevant here in this topic.

It's kinda off topic regarding the whole Gamecube part. But regarding Nintendo making a GT-competitor, it really isn't.

Perhaps you'd be interested to know that NST had a prototype for a motocying game on Wii then ;)

No other details sadly. They had quite a few cancelled projects on Wii (Project Hammer, Wii Crush, various other unnamed projects - including an American Football game with a pigskin control attachment http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/19858 and a horse riding game, complete with saddle! http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=19800)

On a more serious note, that could perhaps have been an okay Excitebike. Although, I still miss that genre. If the Wii U is going to be my only console for the next generation, Nintendo REALLY have to get a GT-competitor.

I must admit that, despite telling myself things would be otherwise, once I got my Xbox 360, it's dominated my gaming expences completely, with my PC coming in second place.

I do agree with Hogge here.

Why did Nintendo go through the trouble of getting car licenses only for a five second tech demo? Possibly it was some kind of Rare project. I recall reading about it in Nintendo Official Magazine back before the Gamecube was announced.
