Rummy
So, seems I'm once again knobbed about by sound issues. This time I'm trying to enable stereo mix so I can record an audio clip in audacity from a video I have and then cut it down to what I want etcetc I'm on Windows 7 and in recording devices and I've got disabled and disconnected devices shown and stereo mix is like 1 of 4 options, the other 3 are 'not plugged in' and stereo mix is disabled but when I try and click and enable it....nothing happens. Whyyyyyyyyyy, my googling so far just seems to turn up people not having a stereo mix option and so I'd assume my hardware can do it but it won't and it hates me and this makes me sad
Ville
So you have put stereo mix as the primary recording method? Then checked its own recording volume from the settings?
Rummy
Well, no, at the moment I have...nothing. I had a usb mic but that's been disconnected for about a week due to me taking my computer out to a friend's for a bit. I have 4 recording devices listed included Stereo Mix(others being FrontMic, Microphone and Line In) all four listed as being Realtek High Definition Audio. The latter 3 are all 'Not Plugged In' and Stereo Mix is disabled, it won't do anything when I try to enable the bloody thing and I don't know why! Sméagol
Hmm, had a look myself.. It’s been quite some time since I recorded something off the radio, wen looking in Windows and Audacity settings and I found my stereo mix to be “currently unavailable”. In Audacity however, I could choose it as a recording device. I was also able to set it as the default device in Windows (7 by the way). What’s weirder is that I have both a stereo mix and a wave as recording devices I can choose, and both work and seem to do the exact same thing. I recall only using the stereo mix, but it’s been a long time. Anyway, I also recall Audacity recording in mono by default. I don't know if you’ve actually already tried to record something in Audacity? Things you should check: - First of all, make sure you have the latest version of Audacity. In the last version, you can select your recording and playback devices right from the interface, something I really appreciated - In Audacity, in settings / devices, make sure you’re recording stereo and not mono - See if stereo mix is available as a device, and try to record some sound of it - If that doesn’t work, or it isn’t available, do you have a wave device you can choose? Try that. - Try setting stereo mix as your default recording device. Another thing, but.. Sound it general does work yes (is it stereo?)? In which case it can’t be a hardware thing. Rummy
Oh, yeah, sound in general works though I had similar...non-responsive? issues previously after a graphics card update(long story thread here). I'd assume I have latest Audacity as I just downloaded it thought it's a beta but apparently the stable/non-beta isn't designed totally compatible with vista/7 whereas the beta is? When I try to select devices through Audacity(my first course of action) it said there are no recording devices available or something.
Sméagol
I’m now looking at my own realtek sound settings (control panel / realtek), but there doesn’t seem to be too many options.. But maybe you can take a look there and see if anything’s off. Otherwise, I’d suggest to have a look in device manager, to see if you have any yellow flags.. If so, then I’d take a look at you motherboard’s manufacturer’s site to see if they have any (updated) sound drivers.
Rummy
Unfortunately everything seems cool and I cannot find any reasonable explanation for any of this, I'll probs just end up doing what I want to on another computer, but this is really quite annoying, probably moreso cos there's just no attributable reason for it as far as I can tell. Ville
I mean after enabling it, have you checked it's individual volume settings? In the audio menu, right click Stereo Mix and then properties. Sometimes these things are on mute...
Rummy
Oh, that's my problem, I CAN'T enable it. I try to, I right click and go for enable...nothing happens, I go into properties and select use this device(enable) and click apply or ok...nothing happens!! It's so bloody annoying! I've also just realise I can't even do this on the other computer because I can't get the audio to work properly in windows on that one either due to some retarded driver issues I can't fixx!!!! Argh. Really wanted to get something done in time for thursday (albeit it totally unimportant and just to make my friend giggle)
Sméagol
Hmm, not a solution, but is the video available on the internet? Perhaps I can record the sound for you. Also, after a bit of googling, I really suggest you take another look at updated drivers. If you give me your motherboard details, I can have a look as well. Rummy
Okies, well ty, I'm shattered atm and gonna go to bed. I'm essentially trying to make some soundbites from various bits of Black Dynamite, so it's just easier to do myself(assuming everything worked, that is :p), already got one thing I wanted from soundtrack files. I might look into drivers tomorrow if I get a chance, some more googling on this end suggests it could be something to do with auto-detecting of attached devices though I didn't get much further before turning to the soundtrack. Possibly being on hdmi output for visual/audio isn't helpful either. Motherboard I've no idea, it's an acer m3400? Has two audio devices(both working/without yellow quesitons) Realtek HD audio and AMD High Definition Audio device(think this is the hdmi). Sméagol
A, a real shame then, because they used to have various soundbites on the official site, but they no longer seem to be there. The problem you’re referring too, I came across it as well, but I don’t think it’s relevant in your case since the stereo mix does show up, you just can’t enable it. I’ve seen various solutions to unhide the stereo mix, to enable it, but that’s not applicable here. Have you succesfully recorded something (in stereo) before though? Ever updated the sound drivers? Unhinding the stereo mix was one issue I came across, but some onboard audio or specific drivers simply not being able to record the stereo mix was another. Might be you’re drivers are too new, too old, or your card simply can’t record “what you hear”.
Rummy
I think I updated my audio drivers just after my system restore with my previous sound fiasco. Maybe my hardware just can't do it, as I've never done it on this comp before(only had it about 6 months). Worst comes to worst, I'll just try connecting an out to an in with a cable. It's not major enough for us to be putting this much in! I thank ye for all your help
Ville
Well ass. I remember having to to do a lot of fiddling around before I could get mine to work in WIN 7, even though it's supposed to be a very basic thing...Luckily I did, so you can enjoy my awesome music videos! ;D
