Calza Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I'm not sure quite how it happened, but my external HDD seems to of been corrupted and I cannot access it all. When I plug it in, windows recognises it and displays it in my computer however chkdsk does not work nor does stuff like trying to scan it or defrag it. I have also tried it on other pcs and on ubuntu to no avail. I've got a picture of the error message and the properties. Anybody have any ideas? I've got quite a bit on there as well as some family photos so I can't really format it.
Shorty Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Looks pretty self explanatory from that error message, it's done for. You might be able to recover some files if they're important but I wouldn't count on it. Chkdsk might fix it, or something from this list: http://www.raneri.it/blog/eng/index.php/2006/03/02/free-tools-to-recover-lost-data/ This is why I only use external HDDs as a backup now, they're subject to data loss far more than internal ones, and slower too.
Konfucius Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 I heard the program Get Data Back can recover harddrives like that but I never used it. You could also try to mount it in Linux, maybe you are lucky.
