Rummy Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 So basically, anyone who reads General and caught my post about my day, I wasted 4 hours trying to get the HDD out of a laptop, to find it takes 5 minutes. This isn't about that though, now that I can get it out, I know that it is IDE. I want to try and hook it up to another computer through USB, so I can get any semi-important shit I had on it off of it(mainly old photos I haven't got elsewhere) then use it as an external HDD. However, I know nothing about doing this!! What's a good enclosure to get, whether it matters, etc etc etc. What do I need to know, what do I need to buy? Will anything just work, I stick my drive in(40GB I believe) then hook it up to my USB and shizam! I can see everything it holds?
Twozzok Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149278 This isn't the exact one I have, but they're all gonna be similiar. EDIT: And yes, it'll be recognised as a USB Mass Storage device IIRC. At least, that's what mine is recognised as.
Rummy Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 Ok sweet, thanks for that Twozzok! I take it they don't need any external power and/or cooling then? I'd always though HDs had some sort of cooling whilst running, I dunno why. Is that just totally wrong lol?
Twozzok Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Not for laptop HD's, USB will power those enough.
Shorty Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 icy box is a popular 2.5" usb enclosure http://www.amazon.co.uk/Drive-Enclosure-External-Connector-Powered/dp/B000MW7K2M/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232027075&sr=8-4
Raining_again Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 HDs don't usually have cooling by default. They especially don't need them externally, as they aren't surrounded by lots of hot components. Icy boxes are awesome!
Rummy Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 Man, wish I'd known that before I went and spent £10 on that one from eBuyer(not to mention it takes aaaaaages to post). Oh well, too late now! Thanks for all the info guys!
Rummy Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 I've encountered somewhat of a problem. I bought the caddy that Twozzok linked me to, it arrived today. I've put my HDD in it, then plugged the cable in(which has two USB things on the other end, so I tried both seperately, as well as both together) in all 3 cases the little green light on the caddy came on...but nothing else happened. Like...nothing at all! Anyone got any ideas whats up with it? EDIT: I can hear it spinning inside? It's getting power... EDITEDIT: Nvm, I think I was just being a bit of a boob. Sorta got it working now. Glad I didn't just fuck it up! Man, finding shit on this drive I'd completely forgot, and some stuff I don't even remember! The amount of crap I'd accumalated in tiny programs and what not! Amazing! Gonna be a task to clean the bastard up!
