Zechs Merquise Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Atleast it wasn't like microsoft. Took them years to get a profit on the xbox brand. Yes they have money but so does other departments of sony. Yes, things aren't all rosy for Microsoft either though - they lost $574 million from their gaming division, however they have deeper pockets. Another major loser was EA who made a loss of nearly $0.5 billion as games like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge have failed to perform in the sales charts.
Choze Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I don't know what part of this people don't understand - SCE made a $1.25 billion loss. YES, SCE MADE A $1.25 BILLION LOSS. SCE didn't make any profit, they made a LOSS. They may make a profit on games - but it clearly isn't offsetting any other loses they make as they are $1.25 BILLLION in the red. SONY as a whole may still be making profit, but their gaming division isn't. I can't see what is so difficult to understand about this. I dont think anyone has a problem understanding SCE made a loss. Bear in mind the costs and gains arent clear in large companies when it comes to their divisions. MS have Zune and Mac software(Mac many $billions earner) in their gaming division as well. 360 losses are likely much larger than MS make them out to be. With PS3, R&D was spread around somewhat across electronics and such. PSP and PS2 are profitable, offsetting the PS3 somewhat Blu Ray royalties are not under SCE either despite PS3 being the main Blu Ray/media device. I do not think Sony mind as much as some people think since PS3 was the reason Blu Ray won out and there is tremendous potential for the future.
Shino Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 But how is Sony doing overall? Are they able to withstand such losses? Because Microsoft surely can.

Do you still get your kicks out of bashing anything Sony?
Hellfire Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I do not think Sony mind as much as some people think since PS3 was the reason Blu Ray won out and there is tremendous potential for the future. PS3 was one of the reasons Blu Ray one, but a small one I think. The main reason was more that Sony payed $120 million to Fox and $400-500 million to Warner.

Hellfire Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Sony paid that money? By themselves? What were the rest of the BDA doing? I'm not at liberty do divulge that information.
Choze Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 There were no payoffs. Though royalty agreements may have been revised. This topic isnt realistic though and HDDDVD is dead and buried where it belongs. It also cemented PS3 as the high end system of choice. Which is where Sony will keep it. If they fix their margins they dont have to worry about sales so much. Interestingly they seem happy enough with meeting their targets for the year and are apparently still ahead of them...
Hellfire Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Of course there were payouts, Toshiba payed too, Sony just bid higher. This is not some stupid rumour, it's the truth, you can call them royalty agreements if you want, they're still payouts. How can they not worry when they're in the red? Bah whatever.
Choze Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Of course there were payouts, Toshiba payed too, Sony just bid higher. This is not some stupid rumour, it's the truth, you can call them royalty agreements if you want, they're still payouts. Nope. HDDVD was dead from the start. The prices of HDDVD releases became lower than new DVD. Which pretty much said it all. All hardware was being sold at a loss as well as the disks. Companies were being handed insane sums to go HDDVD. It was a disaster. Ofcourse some companies wanted to prolong the war(MS and Toshiba) so possibly both formats would fail. But that became impossible. Fox had no reason to bother with HDDVD as they were already a founding Blu Ray member. WB were a HDDVD founding member and were just 'trying out Blu Ray'. No doubt for actual sales and profit margins. Maybe WB got a royalty deal but i doubt anything else happened. How can they not worry when they're in the red? Bah whatever. They do and i am sure some cuts will happen where it can make a difference(poor performing developers or expensive ideas). Oddly enough PS3 is on target for this year. So they are meeting internal expectations. Lets see what happens.
rokhed00 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 It also cemented PS3 as the high end system of choice. Sales figures say otherwise.
Jon Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 I'm sure the usual cutbacks will happen, but with gaming being one of the few industries that isn't in recline, I doubt Sony are gonna shut up shop. I'll eat my hat if they do.
RoadKill Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 They'll likely start outsourcing technology (like CELL) before they close down the gaming division. Cell is already a Toshiba/IBM joint project, Toshiba's forever pimping a cutdown version of that shit as "SpursEngine", and IBM have made some kick ass mainframes with a gazillion Cell processors
Choze Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Cell is already a Toshiba/IBM joint project, Toshiba's forever pimping a cutdown version of that shit as "SpursEngine", and IBM have made some kick ass mainframes with a gazillion Cell processors Joint Sony/IBM/Toshiba product. Toshiba also use Cell in some of their high end tv. Universities use it for physics research. I am guessing Sony will use Cell in the future. There's nothing quite like it on the market. It definately gives then an advantage over using over the shelf parts that MS and Nintendo are forced to use. The PS3 games right now are getting huge jumps due to Cell performing extra GPU tasks across the different SPU.
