Can you rip cds in a format other than WMA?

I use Windows Media Player to rip my cds onto my computer, and they always rip as WMA files. But the new MP3 player i'm planning to order is only compatible with MP3 and Atrac files. Can i rip my music so it transfers to my computer as MP3? I know i can convert WMA to MP3 later, but i don't want to have to do that, and plus it might degrade the sound quality.

Go into options in Windows Media Player.

 

Go to "Rip Music" and from the drop-down dialogue box select MP3.

 

(To get to options you need to right click somewhere on the screen and go to tools, don't know why they've done away with the standard menu bar)

To create the best mp3s that you can you should use a secure (re-reads problematic sectors, when WMP would just plough on) ripping program like EAC or dbpoweramp with the LAME mp3 encoder. There are many guides around the internets about how to set this up. Here's a good one:
