Short question, what's special about Sony's "Super Trinitron" TVs. Is it just a fancier display or what?
its just a regular cathode ray tube "design".

Three colors is like saying RGB=red green blue, so while in the old days we had black and white TV's who were not RGB/Trinitron compliant, right now every single screen has that advantage/feature, the rest... is just a color scheme enhancement that has a little diferent pre-defined defaults in the CRT design that flavours more, for example dark enviroments; thus Trinitron, Super Trinitron, Trinitron Black, and others, are no diferent than a slightly diferent cathode ray design, that evolution happened everywhere, like in a 1996 CRT is miles and bounds from a 2002 CRT, same with a trinitron display, it's not superior to the other manufacters in any way.

EDIT: like colin said the patent has expired and now everyone can use that name and 'slightly' diferent technology in their screens.

Trinitron computer monitors have also been sold by Apple Computer, Dell, Digital Equipment Corporation, Sun Microsystems, and others. Branding aside, the monitors often appear identical to the Sony equivalents, and some still bear the "Trinitron" logo.
