DazzeL Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Yo guys, This is really just something I was curious about if anyone has info or has tried this themselves. My brother, atm, uses his computer monitor to display both his PC (ofc...) and his Xbox 360 using the VGA connection. The picture quality from this is really rather good - especially considering we otherwise don't have access to a HD TV really. I'm not expecting the Wii to output as well but if it could manage 480p resolutions that would be great! Does anyone know, or even better, has anyone tried a device or something that could achieve this? Some sort of Wii-to-VGA adaptor? Cheers in advance for any help!
flameboy Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 http://www.vdigi.com just about the only VGA cable there is out there I reckon....

Most computer monitors have better screen resolution than an HDTV.
DazzeL Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 Thanks for that flameboy - looks really good! Can anyone vouch for this product? It also says the maximum output is 640x480 at 60fps. Is this the same resolution as 480p?
Letty Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 It also says the maximum output is 640x480 at 60fps. Is this the same resolution as 480p? Short answer: Yes.
Yoochem Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Short answer:Yes. Longer answer: Most people refer to 480p as the widescreen resolution, which is 854x480. 480p can however also be 640x480 pixels, when viewed on a regular 4:3 aspect ratio screen, so you're right there. But since the Wii is capable of displaying the widescreen resolution it's not the maximum
DazzeL Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 Yer, apparently the device doesn't support the widescreen resolution at all which is putting me off. ATM I have a 4:3 monitor but have been considering getting a new one for a while which would almost certainly be widescreen thus making the vga adaptor useless! Perhaps I'll just have to persevere with 60hz display for now.
c0Zm1c Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 If you decide to get a new monitor I suppose you could try and get one with component inputs.
Yoochem Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Yeah well it's not like the Wii was made to astonish us with great visuals anyway :p though it can't hurt having the right cables, it actually makes a huge difference! So if you have the money (yes that's always the problem innit? :p ) I'd say you'd have a good reason to finally hop on to the train called LCD
DCK Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 So it doesn't support widescreen? It does. I have the VDigi cable, and although the site says it has a maximum resolution of 640x480, it outputs in 852x480 no problem. Anyway, I can really recommend the VDigi cable, it's excellent quality. Check the "Video Displays Explained" sticky thread for some impressions.
DazzeL Posted January 1, 2008 Author Posted January 1, 2008 Are you sure it's actually outputting in the higher resolution and not just stretching the display?
DCK Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Yes I do, the ratios on screen are correct. Also, my screen is actually 16:10 instead of 16:9 (most widescreen monitors are), and it leaves a black bar on the bottom of the screen because my screen is a bit too high. This indicates that my screen doesn't stretch anything. If it would, it would stretch the Wii's output to a 16:10 resolution, but it keeps it in a 16:9 resolution. Dunno if it's exactly 852x480, but that's the resolution for widescreen 480p.
