Empire: Total War Surprise Announcement

Secretly already under development for a year .

By Philip Kollar, 08/22/2007

Fans of the Total War series of hardcore strategy titles have been silently waiting for their next hit since Medieval 2: Total War catapulted its way into their hearts last year. Stealthy as they've ever been, Sega revealed today that the next installment of the series, Empire: Total War, has already been in the works for over a year and will be arriving on PCs in 2008. Once again moving the historical setting of the series forward, Empire will take place in the 18th century, which developer The Creative Assembly says is the most-requested time period by fans. This setting opens the gameplay up to historically relevant themes such as the Industrial Revolution, globalization, and the race to control various trade routes.

The 18th century also provides some new ways of fighting never before seen in a Total War game. Empire will add fully 3D naval battles to the already impressive number of options available for waging war. Cannon fire, boarding enemy ships, weather, sea conditions, and many other factors will come together in effecting a winner in dramatic ocean fights.

Other additions to Total War's battle system include technological advancements of the age such as land cannons and muskets, with a much-increased focus on gunpowder-driven weapons in general.

Perhaps the best news of all is that the year Creative Assembly has spent working on the game in secret means that it's already nearing completion. Sega expects the game to be released some time in 2008. Go ahead and keep those history books open, but don't forget to check 1UP for news and previews on Empire: Total War in the near future.

Naval battles sound good, but I'm not too happy with land based gun battles.

Of course it is, Americans can finally play as themselves.
