Edit: First of all, in case you don't notice, this thread will be full of spoilers from every Zelda game.

Note: Mods, If this gets "out of hand" just lock it. I though it we could do with one - enough discussion has gone on in the Twilight Princess threads, and enough information has now been given to start the basis of one.

I've specifically separated this post into Official, Logical, and speculation.

Please point out any mistake I've made, with reasons, and I do realise that some games (LoZ/AoL and the Oracle games) may not be linked to any of the others at all. Apart from those, theres enough information (I think) for definitive links.

Thanks for listening.

Official

–When does Twilight Princess take place?

Aonuma: In the world of Ocarina of Time, a hundred and something years later.

–And the Wind Waker?

Aonuma: The Wind Waker is parallel. In Ocarina of Time, Link flew seven years in time, he beat Ganon and went back to being a kid, remember? Twilight Princess takes place in the world of Ocarina of Time, a hundred and something years after the peace returned to kid Link’s time. In the last scene of Ocarina of Time, kids Link and Zelda have a little talk, and as a consequence of that talk, their relationship with Ganon takes a whole new direction. In the middle of this game [Twilight Princess], there's a scene showing Ganon's execution. It was decided that Ganon be executed because he'd do something outrageous if they left him be. That scene takes place several years after Ocarina of Time. Ganon was sent to another world and now he wants to obtain the power...

Well, that clears up:

- Why the sages were different in Twilight Princess

- Why Ganondorf was taken to be executed

- Why there is no flood or anything at the end

So, from this:

Timeline A: OoT (Adult) - The Wind Waker - The Phantom Hourglass

Timeline 1: OoT (Kid) - Majora's Mask - Twilight Princess

End of official information

Logical

Here's some important events:

THE Legend of Zelda:

Only Princess Zelda knew the location of the triforce, The prince of Hyrule (who had grown corrupt with power when the king died*) talked to Zelda about the whereabouts of the Triforce. She refused to tell, and was beaten and tortured, even put into an eternal sleep by an Evil Wizard hired by the prince. When the prince realized the horrid acts he had done, he vowed that all of the daughters of the royal family be named after Zelda.

(*Note: For those who don't know: The death of the king does not make the prince the new king - a ceremony needs to take place first. This is probably why Zelda is always a princess when there's no King)

The Creation:

You know the story, Din, Nayru, and Farore created Hyrule, and left the Triforce behind, which was located in the Sacred Realm.

The Great War:

The war before the Ocarina of Time, Link's mother gave Link to the Deku tree to save him

The Great Flood:

Ganon escaped, but there was no hero to stop him, in the end, Hyrule was flooded. Some species evolved (Kokiri, Zora), and others became spread far and wide (Hylians, Gorons)

The Execution of Ganondorf:

Link went back in time at the end of Ocarina of Time, He and Zelda managed to convince the King of Ganondorf's evil intentions. The King called on the Sages of Light to execute him, they failed (losing one of their own) and instead trapped him in the Twilight Realm.

So here is where the timeline stands:

A:Creation - Great War - OoT (Adult) - Great Flood - WW - PH

1:Creation - Great War - OoT (Kid) - MM - Execution - TP

OK, so lets look at some other Zelda games.

Minish Cap - The story at the start tells the story of a different hero, not Link, who wore a green tunic, and no hat. Minish Cap also ended with Link, the new hero, getting his own hat. And It also explained why there's rupees and hears and stuff in pots and clumps of grass. It would be Logical to put this at the start.

A:Creation - MC - Great War - OoT (Adult) - Great Flood - WW - PH

1:Creation - MC - Great War - OoT (Kid) - MM - Execution - TP

So, that's all I'm totally sure of.

Here's some "arcs" we know about:

Vaati/Trident of Power

Vaati is sealed away in Minish Cap, and brought back in Four Swords Adventures (a scheme by Gannon to help him escape). In this game, Gannon acquired the Trident of Power, which he used in A Link to the Past. We also know that Links Awakening (according to the manual) takes place after ALttP. So:

MC (Stuff) - 4SA - ALttP - LA

As all the holed between OoT and WW/TP are filled, there is only room for them after either WW and TP (as OoT, at the time of release, was officially the first in the timeline)

And from what we know:

LoZ - AoL

All that's left is the two oracle games. However, they don't seem to have any hints towards the timeline. It could be that both games happened at the same time in different timelines. It could even cause the timeline to combine itself (would fit in to the "link-up" ending)

So, to sum up:

This is a safe bet for the timeline:

Timeline A:The Creation - Minish Cap - The Great War - Ocarina of Time (Adult) - The Great Flood - The Wind Waker - Phantom Hourglass

Timeline 1:The Creation - Minish Cap - The Great War - Ocarina of Time (Kid) - Majora's Mask - Execution of Ganondorf - Twilight Princess

After one (or both) if these timelines:

Four Swords Adventures - A Link to the Past - Link's Awakening

and

Legend of Zelda - Adventure of Link.

Speculation

- - - - - - -

Now, into the realms of total speculation.

At the end of Wind Waker, to me, it seems that the Triforce (which grants one wish) has been "used up", and hyrule has been "sealed forever", which makes it seem that there are no games based on the triforce that happen after Wind Waker, this would mean that (as long as PH keeps away from the triforce and ganondorf) PH is the end of that timeline.

Which dumps everything after Twilight Princess.

AoL is the only Zelda that specifically states that Gannon is dead. And I'm sure the Oracle games say that Ganon was resurrected.

Also, it could be possible that "shadow link" in 4SA could of been created from the power Ganon gained from the Twilight Realm in TP.

Therefore I would say:

Timeline A:The Creation - Minish Cap - The Great War - Ocarina of Time (Adult) - The Great Flood - The Wind Waker - Phantom Hourglass

Timeline 1:The Creation - Minish Cap - The Great War - Ocarina of Time (Kid) - Majora's Mask - Execution of Ganondorf - Twilight Princess - Four Swords Adventures - A Link to the Past - Link's Awakening - Legend of Zelda - Adventure of Link - Oracle of Ages/Seasons

I always saw the games as almost different tellings of the same legend. Or maybe different take son the same legend, bar the two NES games, where the second was clearly a sequel, and MM which was a sequel to OOT.
