  1. Xpert 11 Season 4: For Xpert James?

Haha had a cool 2 mill or so from various end of year prizes, and another million from a random event. Sold a youth last month for 1.4, and then the rest comes from slow general savings - I think the Winston training regime is a bit lax at times.. buying top players has long been a fruitful tradition at the club, gotta save! That said, I was looking at you and @Haden 's teams earlier - those sets of youth are looking impressive!! Got the Winston board members sweating. Going to be a great season!! Bring it on
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch

^ Noticed today on the DLC tab in-game that it describes the second batch of DLC as an extra dungeon, extra story segments, and extra challenges or.. something. Sounds alright, could still be a good opportunity to give some linear content to contrast the main game. Here's hoping they've seen what can be done with DLC from CDPR! I'm way behind you guys - no idea how much I've played, maybe about 30-something hours - haven't even attempted a divine beast! Loving the shit out of the game; I've spent all my time criss-crossing the map, so beautiful, endlessly rewarding, so easy to drop in and out of. Fantastic. Genuinely think I could still playing this at Christmastime
  3. House buying is the worst

Thanks!! Even more mad thing is that we actually put an offer on another flat the same day, barely above asking price, and got that one accepted too. Tiny tiny place, but still, 11 offers less than the one from the previous week on the same road.. Luckily there's no fee in withdrawing a succesful offer.. Haha unfortunately we rather fell in love with the most expensive part of already-pricey Edinburgh so not quite - but yeah definitely saved a quid having moved here from London!!
  4. House buying is the worst

Had an offer accepted on a flat last Friday Getting on that ladder!! Touch wood! The system for buying a place up here in Edinburgh is bonkers. There's an 'offers over' price, and then people bid blind above it by the closing date. Soliciters advise going 10-20% over the offers over price, though obviously that means you run the risk of paying actual tens of thousands of quid more than the you need to (ie, above the second highest bidder). We placed 13th out of 13 bids on the last place we went for, then first out of 6 on the one we got on Friday. All just massively stressful isn't it. I feel like I've aged about 5 years in the last five days..... Anyway I was quite excited but having read through the past couple pages here I'll temper my expectations on our projected move in date!!
  5. Xpert 11 Season 3: 10 year anniversary edition

I cannot stress how painful it was for Winston to lose the league last season. The draw at Cubic. The last minute equaliser. Losing on goal difference. Harsh, cruel, painful lessons were learnt. This season Winston returned, strong, indefiable; unbeaten, only 5 goals conceded from 12 games. The club would like to congratulate Nikos on a race well run, as strong and fierce rival as we could have asked to do battle with. So now we look to the future. Exeter's setup look not unlike Winston's. The Phlanax record looks crazy. Winston look their match, but the Phlanax youth look truely insane. We will have to spend; we are proven masters in the market; Theofylaktos Tsirogiannis proves our transfer prowess; in the Xpert for an astonishing 12/12 games played; captain of the xpert for half of them. He is undisputeably the league's best player. But most of all, Winston know how to sit atop the perch, season long, head protruded, proud and expectant, ready for the crown. It's in the name. Winston know how to Win.
  6. Spoiler-Free: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U / Switch

Fair to say I was... cautious.. going into this. Haven't played a console Nintendo game since Super Mario Galaxy (I think..??? That's mental seeings it's ten years since that was out) bar a few hours of Skyward Swords which I quickly packed in. Wasn't particularly attracted to the E3 stuff, and it was only the last trailer that truely got me interested. Finally got myself a Switch last week, having waited for ages for stock. Anyway... whew. Probably about 15 hours in.. this game is amazing. If my ten year old self had been able to play this I'd have totally lost my shit. I remember running around the tiny Ocarina Hyrule just exploring, and loving it. I said in the Witcher thread last year that that game felt like the natural evolution of what Ocarina started in the 90s. I was wrong; this is that game, and the sense of Zelda-y-ness is totally there for me. Though it also seems completely unique; a bit of Last Guardian in it's sense of scale, but the feeling of being totally in the world seems quite unique. It also has a touch of Ghibli to the art style and the towns, and I love the slightly more eastern music and instruments in the score. Totally the antidote to coming off Horizon, which I found completely stale and uninspired. When I play this, I feel like every playtime I find something weird, new, fun, or buzzing with personality. I'm surprised it's had such mixed reviews around here - I'm totally hooked and loving it. Didn't think Nintendo had it in them to be honest.
  7. Xpert 11 Season 3: 10 year anniversary edition

Ha!! Just the stragglers in the B-Team bringing down the form average (or is it?). In any case - Winston could win their next fixture with average form of 4.. Bring it on!
  8. Robot Wars

Camaaaannnn this deserves a thread fo sho As part of 90s nostalgia month after Pokemon Go, BBC have rebooted my favorite program as a kid. I loved it. Felt Dara o'Briain was a bit lacking in jokes an charisma for a comedian but the action was good as back in the day Also love how incredibly nerdy all of the contestants are, combined with the bbc epic slow-mo shots, ha. Shame Razor was such a massive letdown!
  9. Robot Wars

Resurrecting this thread ahead of tonights ep! Quite enjoying this season but kind of got mixed feelings on the big spinning wheels of death that are becoming more and more popular post-Carbide. On the one one hand, they're awesome. On the other hand, half the fights only last about 8 seconds this series! Are you guys still watching? I also feel like 2 series per year might be overkill.. though I still love it.
  10. The best looking game of this generation

Haha nah man. I wish! I'm guessing from the resolution it was taken with some souped-up superwidescreen PC setup, with a cheeky free camera mod. When I inevitably go back for a second playthrough one day, I hope the PS4 version gets a camera mode patched in at some point like dat beautiful camera mode in Horizon / Uncharted 4.
  11. Playstation Plus Free Games

Hmm, yeah it's kind of hectic in that there's always tonnes of stuff flying around the screen in bright neon colours, but at the same time the basic mechanics are pretty simple (dont let stuff get too close to your ship, only a few controls). Played the first couple of levels with my lassie and we had a good time; the easiest role is just the flying the ship part, and the other player can hop around between the various guns, shields, and checking the map.. The experience is definitely improved the more people you get in a room playing it though - easier said than done though given how much a rip off controllers are!
  12. Playstation Plus Free Games

I tend to look at the plus releases and have similar negative reactions to people in here, but the games I've actually played that I recognise are all fantastic. This War of Mine, Invisible Inc, Journey - all great. Can't complain really. Played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime with a couple of mates over Christmas - it was awesome. Just look at it! Basically you all scurry around the ship between the weapons ports, the shields, the steering wheel bit depending on what's around you. Fantastic local coop game
  13. Horizon: Zero Dawn

^ Yeah, totally agree 3B0B131301364. The script doesn't help, but I think her voice actor comes off as trying a bit too hard in general or being directed to sound too selfserious.. ultimately comes off as pretty portentous and bland. Then again, lacking social skills and interesting dialogue is probably fairly realistic for someone who's grown up the woods without any mates! I'd agree with Flink - though they're ostensibly the same genre, you'll be pretty disappointed if you go in hoping to scratch that Witcher itch - they're both good at totally different things. Unlike Witcher, the characters are all totally forgettable, the script is devoid of humour and character, the lore is all pretty lightweight. You can explore, but in most the towns I've come across, the merchant is the only character you can speak to, none of your choices seem to matter much.. basically, as an RPG it's pretty cack. But it's a great action game! The Tomb Raider comparison is pretty apt. And it's very pretty. And everyone likes it more than me so.. give it a go! I'd be interested to hear how you find it seeing you loving Zelda over in that thread (although, again, very different games).
  14. The best looking game of this generation

Yeah, I find myself increasingly sharing this feeling; the first time you see an Unchartered 4 you're blown away by it, but there's a definite sense of diminishing returns with how big budget AAA games all look pretty similar; particularly with shared lighting and graphics engines and similar settings. Mine would probably be Looking foward to spamming that screenshot button in When Rime comes out too. And nothing has blown me away like when I played the remaster of Journey for the first time Of all the games that chase realism, it's probably The Witcher that most impresses me. I actually think it's that it doesn't constantly ram home the great vistas and amazing graphics; so much of Velen is boggy, muddy, boring, that when the moments of awesome beauty or experimental art direction come they hit hard, they feel unexpected and earned, the same way that an amazing view or sunset in real life is amazing because they contrast the mundane everyday.
  15. General Switch Discussion

Yeah, I've been periodically checking and not finding it in stock anywhere. From what I've heard it sounds like they're sorting out the joycon issues and that's what's causing the holdup in new deliveries. Bit bummed out not be playing Zelda when everyone else is but there we go
  16. Xpert 11 Season 3: 10 year anniversary edition

The Winston have risen to the challenge! I'm thinking of restarting my old feature, Words With Winston; which was rather similar in format to The Inter-view. Any takers for intervewees?
  17. Survival/Battle royale games

I'm pretty similar in that I've always thought the longform nature make them seem like great fun and particularly tense - the kind of games where anyone who's played them have a tonne of unique anecdotes from mad encounters and the like. But as a mac user haven't had a chance to play any of them. I feel like these are the kind of games that psplus is born for! Low budget enough to make it on there, and would hugely benefit from a variety of skill-levels and a big player base. Make it happen Sony!
  18. Should I get a switch right now?

Where did you find one? I'm about ready to put down the cash after getting a big tax rebate the other day, can't find it in stock anywhere though..
  19. Mass Effect: Andromeda

Sooo... the game's getting some pretty poor writeups based on the first few hours https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/03/14/mass-effect-andromeda-review-opening-hours/ Side quests feel like something from a 2004 Korean MMO. Just complete nothingness, running from map icon to map icon, scanning objects with your scanner when told to, and then AI companion SAM letting you know that, yup, the source of the defects has been found/animal has been captured/toddler reunited with rabid tiger, despite your actually doing nothing relevant to the tissue-thin narrative. I'd been super-hyped for this and actually thought the last couple trailers they put out were starting to look pretty good. I'll check out the reviews tomorrow, but in all likelihood I might just go back and played the original trilogy, which I never played. Or finish off Kotor!
  20. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Alright lads, fess up - who set him loose on me?
  21. Football Season 2016/17

That was such an entertaining game of football!! Haven't been that pumped up since Wales beat Belgium last year in the Euros. Seeing the massive twat Nasri get done was the icing on the cake! Just saying lads, four years ago I took on the Leicester job as the first step of my career in Football Manager 2013. Took them to promotion, then won the premier league, and finally, after 157 hours of play time, the next season I beat Juventus 2-1 in the Champions League final. History playing out as told by my Steam account!
  22. Xpert 11 Season 3: 10 year anniversary edition

Hey man, sorry, busy week for me so no opportunity to fit in some reports. Good writeup! I totally forgot about the new season, major letoff as my first game isn't till Monday! Phew
  23. Horizon: Zero Dawn

That's just it though - being a well made game isn't the same as being a incredible game. Same way a film that's competently shot, edited, with great VFX doesn't make for a great film if it has a weak script and indistinct direction. As I say, I totally get why you guys love it, but for me the generally great gameplay doesn't make up for the general sense of seen-it-before. Yeah, ha! That's the problem. The benchmark has been set so high (and to be fair CDPR had the Witcher book series to draw on for it's fantastic lore and characters) that games that use too close a formula suffer by comparison. As an off-topic aside - good article from the other week on Geralt's voice here That said, I think you'll have enjoy this even if it doesn't hit those Witcher highs - by comparison I seem quite negative on it, but it's definitely a tonne of fun. I think mainlining the game might be the way to go - some of the core story is actually pretty good and intriguing; going straight through the main story would be a pretty good experience. Better than Fallout 4 in my book!
  24. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Haha, what a post - glad you're enjoying it! I think I'm the only one in the this thread not to be having a similar experience. The praise in here seems more consistent than Zelda's getting over in the Nintendo boards! My experience so far has been fairly the opposite of that. However amazing the graphics engine is, something about the land seems quite unreal, unconvincing, and unimaginative to me, like there's nothing distinctive or new about the art direction. I've also found all the characterisation to be pretty portentously humorless and lacking in character more generally. I'm not latching on to any of the tribal politics, the side quests all seem mundane, and most of all I find Alloy's character to be disappointingly, tediously bland.. I think it must be a taste thing because I can see how objectively well made this game is; and the combat is so tight and fun, crafting is super well balanced and the game is amazingly fluid throughout. I'm still sinking in the hours so it's definitely doing something right! (Also photo mode is fantastic). But all said I don't think the game will leave much of a lasting impression on me when I'm done Have you guys felt any of this at all or have you been enjoying the whole experience? and I didn't even compare it to Witcher 3 once! Oop..
  25. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Spent the day playing this and have done a total 180 on my initial thoughts. It is fantastic! Everything about the movement and combat feels super fluid (probably helps that I'm coming off Last Guardian, lol.) Only downside is that it's a shame the dialogue is generally pretty po-faced, and the sidequests pretty dull.. I'm hoping it'll lighten up as it progresses. The main story and all the caves / metal ruins are, by contrast surprisingly intriguing though. Basically, loads of fun!
