  1.

Mainly because it's on the soundtrack of My Blueberry Nights. I used to think that her music was boring, but I'm really feeling the depth of her voice right now.

Cat Power is amazing, but for me, The Greatest is her least interesting/powerful album. The intentionally smooth/jazzy/whatever the term is production style is NICE but blankets the power her music can have.

Albums like Moon Pix, You Are Free, The Covers Record, What Would The Community Think etc all blow me sideways.

  2. Henry means home-ruler, I've always known that.

Robert means bright fame, I love. Not just fame, but bright, as though it might burn out any moment, and is really off putting to others.

    Eric means honourable ruler

Then my Scottish clan name, McKay, which I guess just is what it is.

My last name is a colour/has no meaning.

  3. She's definitely putting in more effort/is more interesting than any of her contemporaries, but yeah, in her 13 minute epics, she should push it further. The music video bit was fine, but really not related to the start at all. I liked bits of the first half, but what Daft just said...she should use more interesting imagery, she still rooted in the sort of stuff Pop music has been borrowing from for decades, just presenting it slightly differently.

I just think of John Waters and his use of shocking things/strange looking people and how that words...I'd bet she's a fan of his films. Her 'knowing' narration and stuff could be better too, be more LOL in the vein of Waters movies. She should look to them and things like them, truly underground stuff, for inspiration, if she wants to create a truly different aesthetic/visual identity to her contemporaries.

I'd find that more interesting and truly 'boundary-pushing!!!!' combined with her born this way stuff - we've all seen dancing in city streets/exploding cars before...she does it well, but she could be better.

  4. @Frank what do you wear when you go out (clubbing/in town)? Cause I always imagine (from what you post) you're the reincarnation of Hepburn/Monroe, or at least have hair like/drive around town in a car like:

Yet in the photos of you I've seen I don't recall you (clothes-wise) evoking that feeling. You should embrace it. In a male way. I don't know how one does that though.

Maybe you should start smoking with one of those cigarette holder things.

IN the vein of the good stuff thread:

I'm on such a high since Friday night - I feel like I finally understand why so many pop/dance songs feature the content they do - I've been missing it until now. I thought I was just strangely uninterested in other people. Right now I feel like locking the door and spinning around and around in circles until I collapse, laughing, onto a brightly-coloured bean bag.

  5. I hate that I know no other languages. So many people at uni with me can speak at least 2.

I wasn't very good at them in school at all (C at GCSE French woop) but I still wish I'd somehow...been decent/done a language anyway. There's so little emphasis on language learning here as opposed to like...anywhere else in the universe. It must be something to do with the teaching as well as me just being bad. Like if it was taught differently I wonder if I would've been better at French/more bothered? Maybe not.

But yeah, living with an Italian who speaks english fluently, a dutchman who speaks english fluently (and effectively French too) makes me annoyed I don't know anything. I want to, in reaction, become fluent in Scottish Gaelic, just to have something as my own. Even though I could speak to no one I know with it.

I'm currently living within Rihanna's latest album, the sounds have leaked from the songs and are influencing my life. The Calvin Harris riff in We Found Love is everything to me - I realised the other day I hadn't been clubbing in so long/clubbing enough recently to hear it while out - I finally did last night. I was all like, Don't Stop The Music.

I felt like like the Only Girl (In The World). Several people told me how nice I looked (such a random thing to do these days but the best thing to hear when you aren't expecting it - though it may have been because I was dressed relative smartly) and generally my self-esteem is everything right now. Was just getting with the same person (who wasn't just a random, actually a friend of mine I liked too) throughout. I was all like, Where Have You Been, You Da One - really wanna see if u can go dountoun wi a gerl like m'.

I'm still drunk but have to be up now to get to Croydon for 9.30 to film some shit for some shit about some Judo shit or some shit.

OH and I found out someone on my course was a runner for Rihanna's new video, but he was even grateful, saying like "Oh, I'm not a Rihanna fan, I didn't even know what she looked like.".

  7. The Moneyball poster is stunning me.

So I've been ALL about Lynch recently, as I'm doing an essay on him, so have been diving into books about him, by him etc, and OBVIOUSLY all his films again. I love a lot of his work so this was pleasant.

dlynch.jpegI still ADORE Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet. The former contains one of my favourite scenes in cinema, certainly one of the most powerful (The Club Silencio sequence).

I still like Inland Empire, but it's lost some of it's charm (if that's really the right word...).

I think Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is an absolute mess with some nice Lynchian moments in it. Something about it just grates. Argh. (Ignoring it's worth or lack thereof as a suitable end/start to the great TV show)

The rest are all good fine (but some I need to watch again but the library has lost all the copies *coughlosthighway*), except Dune, which I never finished as it's shit and Lynch agrees.

But yeah my Film Context tutor is a Queen of Life and generally awesome and she and I have a telepathic bond over Lynch, so come today's Lynch-focused lecture, tonnes of it was just us chatting/lolling at semi-private Lynch-centric jokes.

Then in my tutorial with her afterwards we just talked about our fave/least fave bits. I loved how she stressed the fact I needed to run home and download the Lost Highway soundtrack more than prepare an essay plan for her. <3

Any other Lynch fans? I even watched all his (very intriguing) short early films.

  8. Life Drawing *then* Getting A Drink With Friends *then* Sex

Actually though it's that while I was out our heating got fixed, only now it's constantly on the highest setting, and nothing will lower it. As someone who gets headaches from central heating, this is not nice. I refuse to sleep in a boiling house after tonight - I'll go elsewhere, I'm not paying for this shit, regardless.

  9. It's not like it looks bad, it's just that the idea of Catwoman and Bane, and what we've seen in the pictures seem like a hard sell after the RELATIVE realism of the last two movies and their villains. Though Batman Begins has fear gas and mysteriously reappearing-after-being-presumed-dead warlords.

I love Batman & Robin so I don't mind silly/camp Batman, but it would be a shame if there were elements that became unintentionally silly in this one. But I've yet to see a Chris Nolan film where that's the case though.

  10. Hmmm, I think you may be right. I'm just wondering though because the industry level ones capture at an obscene rate, like 12000fps+, if there were consumer ones that did it but not to that extent.

Yeah, our one(s) can do a million fps I think. Why we'd ever need that is beyond me.

  11. F

@Paj\! Birthday Cake is so short because I believe it is going to be released as a full track at some point later on. It's like we're only getting a small slice before she unleashes the whole cake ha.

I hate that. I heard fans asked the producer/s on twitter and they said a long version would come out but...that's just shit.

It makes TTT feel even more *shrug*, like it's just what was done at the time, rather than what is the best she and her team can do.

  12. So a lot of people here will have bought/listened to/stolen her new album - thoughts?

    RIHANNA-TALK-THAT-TALK.jpg

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed! Which is a shame. The first few tracks are awesome, and We Found Love is one of the best pop songs this year definitely. The second half the album falls flat for me. It's too samey, VERY filler.

Birthday Cake is bizarre...why is it so short, without being complete? It's not like an obviously short song/interlude, it sounds like a normal length track that fades out after she swears in the verse.

Cockiness' amusing lyrics don't have the same fun as things like S&M did, either.

It's not BAD, but it's not really a step up after the excellent and all-round solid Loud, either. Feels rushed and very slight.

Best tracks are You Da One, We Found Love and Where Have You Been.

Drunk On Love should be better considering it samples The Xx.

And there's a brief moment of a stunning piano jaunt on Farewell that is so much more interesting than the generic beat going through it otherwise.

    ---

Rihanna will have a greatest hits collection to end them all, srsly. Can you imagine?

    Pon De Replay

    SOS

    Unfaithful

    Break It Off

    Umbrella

    Don't Stop The Music

    Shut Up And Drive

Hate That I Love You (ft. Neyo)

    Take A Bow

    Disturbia

    Hard

    Russian Roulette

    Te Amo

    Rude Boy

    S&M

    What's My Name?

    Only Girl (In The World)

    Cheers (Drink To That)

    California King Bed

    We Found Love

And that's excluding great songs that weren't big enough hits, like Man Down and Rehab, and all her popular collaborations like Love The Way You Lie.
