Not much to explain really, no story/plot just some high school girls and the everyday things they get up to. Sort of like a Japanese Seinfield, not as funny though but still great. The pervy male teacher and the cat Kamineko always make me laugh.

Read this, it will answer your questions. http://ubuntuguide.org/ Also, just a quick sudo apt-get install <package-name> will install software. Check your /etc/apt/sources.list to make sure it will grab from the internet instead of the cd. I cant remember if it does that by default. Read the man (manual) pages for command line utilities like tar, bzip etc. man <application-name> The best thing about using Ubuntu (well Debian and debian based linux distros) is aptitude. All your software is managed from one place. A quick apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade will upgrade every bit of software on you computer.

Ubuntu is based on Debian.

Are you talking about a different theme for Gnome or a different desktop enviroment, KDE ?

I am running Ubuntu at the moment and its great, very easy for new users to install and use. Why dont you try the live cd first to see if you like it ? BTW - It has a hideous brown theme, just dont let that put you off.

Thats not going to work if he is running Windows 9x/ME.

What version of Windows are you running ? Have you run a full surface scan on your drive ? What is on that partition, anything worth saving ?

Is the drive being found in the bios ? It does sound like its knackered though. Easy to get a replacement, just an ordinary pata drive. Looking at about 35 quid for a 40GB drive, thats the smallest you can buy nowadays.
