triforcemario Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Wii Video 9 is a free video conversion application developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to convert your computer video files (like avi, divx, mpeg, etc.) into the specific video formats that are playable on the Wii. Wii Video Playback Notes The Wii is capable of playing back videos in the Wii Photo Channel. These videos must be present on your inserted SD card in order to be viewable. The video playback feature of the Wii Photo Channel was clearly designed to let people watch and play with their short movies recorded from their Digital Cameras so keep in mind it may have limited playback features. The Wii Manual states the following under supported formats: Video Files: Format: QuickTime (motion JPEG) (.mov files) Size: Up to 848x480 The key thing to note here is that the Wii is only capable of playing back Motion JPEG video files. Interestingly enough, the Wii can playback Motion JPEG files in both .mov and .avi containers. This does not mean the Wii will playback any type of .mov or .avi you find on the internet. A lot of .avi movies on the internet are actually MPEG-4 ASP (aka Xvid aka Divx) video files and NOT Motion JPEG. A lot of .mov files on the internet are actually Sorenson, MPEG-4 or H.264 video files and NOT Motion JPEG. Hence the need for Wii Video 9 to convert your videos. Motion JPEG Notes The Motion JPEG format is quite commonly used in Digital Cameras since they don't require extra compression hardware in the camera (since all digital cameras already can create JPEG images). Motion JPEG video does not compress as well as any MPEG video. Additionally, Motion JPEG videos typically contain uncompressed PCM audio. This all means that Motion JPEG files take up a lot of space. Therefore don't be surprised that your resulting Motion JPEG file is much larger than your original source video at comparable quality levels. nicolasmasset Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 nice!!! Now they'll hopefully let you hook up your own external hd to the usb's, and we're good to go!
Nintendork Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 That's quite high resolution, but I don't see why they didn't just support DVDs. Apparently it comes with software for Windows only. So Mac users will have to either purchase or illegally obtain a QuickTime 7 serial to take advantage of this. I won't be though.. it's more effort than it's worth when you consider that video compression is extremely intensive and time consuming. No need for USB and external hard drives, Wii will probably support CDs and DVDs with these files burnt straight onto it. I think the media player is gonna be a half arsed last thought, but it does give promise to the possibility of getting games trailers and exclusive content direct from Nintendo.
Konfucius Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 That's a really cool tool - thanks for the link. Now I only need to get a big SD card...
