Ramar Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Ok gents, my new pc when I switch it on, warns me the CPU is over heating, it works for a while before shutting down. I even managed to format the hard drive and was just about to install windows before it shut down. The heat sink is correctly fitted and working, the PSU fan is working, the gfx card fan is working, I have a fan on my case that is working. I can't for the life of me think why its over heating. Could it be the BIOS? Any ideas things, to try would be great.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If everything is really working, maybe it's a software problem. The BIOS perhaps... as you said. Anyway, maybe you should check the thermal paste between the heatsink and the CPU.
Ramar Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 I think it could be the paste, I may have damaged it by reconnecting the heatsink.
Bogbas Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Get some new paste. But don't get anything too cheap. And if you're wondering how to put it, there are some helpful installation animations on zalman's site http://www.zalman.co.kr
Shorty Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Yeah most heatsinks tell you not to pull them off and put them back with the same paste. If you think it's really overheating and not an error, then take this opportunity to buy a nice big new CPU fan with some new paste.
Guest Jordan Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 too much paste is a bad thing, and AMD don't even cover the warrenty if you use any. Most headsinks come with a small square of the stuff mounted on the heatsink itself, didn't yours?
Ramar Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 It did come with some. I removed the heatsink because one of the prong thingies weren't in properly. Buying a whole new heat sink is a bit much isn't it? Surely just some new paste will do.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I always though that the same paste could not be utilized for a 2nd time, after you remove the heatsink once.
Ramar Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 Having played around with the pc today, I've managed to install windows on it. I've also found out that there is BIOS updates for each processor, under the Pentium D 945 (which I have) it says the update changes the CPU temperature algorithm. This may mean my current BIOS thinks its overheating when really it's not. Hopefully I can sort that all out tomorrow.
Ramar Posted October 21, 2006 Author Posted October 21, 2006 OK chums. Needs your help, firstly I apologise for bumping an old(ish) topic but my problems aren't solved. I updated the BIOS, and bought some Silver Thermal Compound and applied it to the Heatsink, it is still over heating, I mean 80-110 degrees Celsius over heating. I'm thinking of getting a new heatsink, but maybe I thought I could underclock the processor, any ideas. Its a Pentium D 3.40GHZ.
