Note that these are 2001 values, dunno if they hold 100% accurate in 2006.

This is just to licence the Wii hardware spec to read DVD's and use the DVD logo, royalties for unit not included. It's a one time thing, but for a add-on that according to surveys isn't feasible commercially it's not a service to the community, it's just stupid.

Then add:

that gives us a extra $25 or so for each Wii? that's 20€ or £13,3 for unit.

It's a big extra cost per unit, and dificult to pay when not bundled/included in the initial price.

Imagine how much you'd have to sell of those at £15 to pay the initial fee (the £13,3 are just royaltie per unit), and if they were to sell it at +£20 not only it wouldn't sell, but Ninty fans would complain about it.

That's simply not profitable.

I'm sure they could of made a deal with panasonic and toshiba to get around the royalty issue

yeah right. do you know what DVD forum is... right?

It's a standalone international organization. There's no point in bringing Panasonic and Toshiba into this.

Toshiba and Panasonic/Matsushita are just founding members along with various others, they don't decide stuff, and certainly would not interven to save Nintendo out of licencing fee's, they have no reason to do so, out of pity.

There's no getting around licencing fee's. All this is just too farfecthed when everyone has a DVD player at home nowadays, could still happen Nintendo can do a add on, but from what we've seen here in the forum... will it sell?

It would be far more inteligent from Nintendo to support codec playback for formats such as: Xvid, DivX, H.264, mp3 and such... be it renognized from SD cards, USB 2.0 media devices, access files stored in the PC through Wi-fi or even DVD+R.

But that might be a little to ambitious.
