Couple of things struck me with the new Q&A section, and seeing how's there's no thread for it in the news, i thought i'd stick it here since it concerns Wii...

The first was this:

Hey! Do you think its possible that the Wii online service will allowe voice-chat with people you dont know? I really hate the system NIntendo have made with NDS.

Jim, 17

Currently, I doubt it, Nintendo is hard core with this friend code rubbish.

if you look at everything ninty has released about the wifi service for wii they are still being very secretive. if they were just gonna throw out the same system as the DS they would have said by now. personally, i think the WFC in place now is perfect for handheld gaming, with Wii yes it'll need some changes.

i like the idea of having an online profile so people can see what you're playing, but i'm sure ninty aren't about to copy microsoft completely and will put their own spin on the idea (the rumoured in-built camera maybe could be used to place Wii Sports Tennis-like facial images onto ur profile...?). on Wii, yes you should be able to meet strangers and play, like the way "rivals" works on metroid hunters... this way you can place people on ur rivals list and play them again, and if so you could add them automatically to ur friends list.

personally, i don't understand why people think it's a good idea to be able to speak to entire strangers the first time you ever play them?!?! i don't want swearing and stuff happening online while i'm playing, and i'm sure a lot of older players and those new to this won't either. but the option would be there to add strangers and open up your profile to them and vice versa, if you so wished. so people who wana use only codes will be happy, and those who don't will be chuffed too...? :D

given that the DS is played online by new gamers of all ages and young children, i think the friends codes is a good idea. keep it for Wii, but expand it so you can pick and choose which strangers you add to ur lists. having >>only<< the ability for >>anyone<< that you didn't even choose for ur list to curse and give off to you down the connection is a bad bad bad idea. have it as an option, not standard.

Secondly:

Hi, I just wondered if you knew if Wavebird controllers would be compatible with the Wii without using the Wavebird's receiver? (eg does the Wii have built-in 2.4ghz receivers) I am only wondering as on this picture of the Wii:- http://www.cdrinfo.com/images/uploaded/Nintendo_Revolution1.jpg there doesn’t appear to be enough space to close the flap with the Wavebird receivers plugged in. Also, I wondered if you knew if the GameCube memory cards would fit under the flap with it closed? I am just thinking it would be a shame to spoil the lovely design of the Wii if the flap has to remain open in order to use GameCube Memory cards/Wavebirds! Thanks

Robert, 23

I have said before that the current Wavebird receivers will not fit into the Wii ports. Nintendo has stated that the controllers will be compatible. The only way I can see this happening is if there is inbuilt receivers. The memory cards will stick out just like on the GCN, so the flap will have to remain open.

look at the image stated above (http://www.cdrinfo.com/images/uploaded/Nintendo_Revolution1.jpg) and you can see that the GCN ports aren't exactly centered inside the flap, they are off to one side. surely this is accomodate wavebird receivers. they would fit no problem. and having to keep the flap open doesn't bother me, after all to play any GCN game you're gonna have to anyway coz the standard controllers are wired.

To be honest, and this is in no offense to whoever answers them, don't treat the Q&A section here as gospel. In my opinion its one of the weakest sections of the site, often being totally wrong and treating some answers as facts not just speculation. Enjoy it for what it is but don't take it too seriously.

The wavebirds will work.if it was a third party controller i would have my doubts but they ain't stupid.i thought theu said at one time that the wii would be fully compatible and went on to include the dk bongos etc.

I really never tried the ds or xbox live so i can't comment on that. All i can say is it looks like wii's on-line is very slow, besides this 24 stuff but what about the games?

ah right okey-dokey. i mean, i know a lot of this stuff is speculation, but sometimes i do feel it is being stated as fact and some people might not know better. same goes for personal opinion (like if the wavebirds would fit or the friends codes) nice to know you agree.
