gaggle64 Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 OK, I'm fairly pissed. After spending £200 on a spanking new X1800XT, I find I can't install it because the hard drive cable-point in my mother board stops it from sitting in the PCI-E slot properly - the board is about 1/4 inch too long. Can some one recommend me a decent graphics card that is 8.5 inches long or less? How long is a 7900? Anyone know?

Go for the x1900 all in wonder A whopping 10inch monster cock. but on a serious note, im not sure how many gpus go by those requirements.
Bogbas Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 How comfortable are you with messing around with your pc? I think that you might get it fit if you take the IDE cable and separate all the wires from each other. Or could you post a pic of the mobo or the model of it? There usually is some kind of way around this kind of issues
gaggle64 Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 Ya see,the edge sits on top connector at the end of the cable, and I don't think I have another hard drive connector on my board. Looking at pictures, a 7900 looks smaller then a X1800 - I guess those things are extra long because of the exra tarnistors or something. If anyone happens to be in measuring range of a 256mb 7900 though, I'd be most oblidged. I just want to make sure I avoid having the same problem.
Bogbas Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 Btw transistor's are pretty small. But the can- like things on your board are electrolytic capacitors. And those are usually the problem. And every mobo I've seen has at least 2 ide connectors. Just tell me the motherboards model, so that I can have a look
gaggle64 Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 Ok, I hope to proved wrong - it's an Asus A8NE-FM. My lil' bros just got off, so I'll crack it open again and have another look.
Jon Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 The 7600gt will definantly fit in there, the the 7900gt will probably fit aswell.
Bogbas Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 It's this one isn't it? So what's the problem as I can't see how the IDE connectors could be blocking the card... Could you take a photo of your setup? Because I'm having hard time to believing it doesn't fit.

Yeah, i'm not seeing how the card (pink) and ide connectors (purple) can be this big: 'Cos that ide connector must be huuge.
gaggle64 Posted June 14, 2006 Author Posted June 14, 2006 It's the hard disk drive cable (is that same thing? Ah, who cares..) that's in the way - lookie here: See - follow the line along from the 6600 I have in there and it contacts the cable connector. The edge of my x1800XT has to sit on top of it, which stops it from snuggiling comfortably into the PCI-E slot. Be aware, we really are talking a few millimeters here. I think it must be because it's a 512mb card. A 256mb 7900 looks like it will fit there fine. Note also only two RAM slots. Bah! EDIT:Oooh, actually, I think I may have found something. I have just discovered another connector slot way further up from the first, hidden behind all the wires nearer the hardrive bays. Some kind of long-lost blue cousin. My card should fit now! Yay! Seriously though, I think my motherboard is some kind of weird mutant version of the one up there - cut about the middle third out and stick the rest together. Cheers for all your help anyways!
