Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages

Recommended Posts

Just got this and it's pretty good so far. It's basically a space shooter combined with an old school action RPG, complete with customisable ships. One thing mentioned in the video is the possibility to build a Link style ship, complete with boomerang and spin attack. I haven't found that level of customisation yet, but I'm still early in the game.

The ship classes are:

Arsenal (Tank): Basically a big bastard ship with lots of weapons.

Caster (Mage): Focuses on charge shots.

Grappler (Melee): Focuses on grabbing enemy ships and flinging them around as well as inflicting melee damage.

Rogue (Thief/Stealth): Focuses on stealth and decoys.

Fighters (Hunter/Ranger): Focuses on speed and discharging engine heat as a weapon.

Duo: Mainly used for local co-op. Basically a ship with two parts, which can be controlled by two players (or possibly just one. Haven't checked).

Certain ship types also feature two classes, for example I'm currently using a Caster/Rogue hybrid which is pretty sweet.

The story starts off a bit slow, with the game forcing you to use certain ships as a sort of tour of the game, before allowing you to choose and customise your own ship. You start off with a selection of ship types (one of each type IIRC) and choose which areas to research. You can choose which area to research, so if you prefer a certain type of ship, you can plow research into that to get new hull types/weapons etc. You can also take on paid research to boost your cash.

It's pretty good so far, although the ship customisation can be a bit overwhelming at times and it's not always clear what you're equipping until you try it out in a mission/scenario.

I wasn't too sure on the controls at first, but I'm really liking them now. Basically you steer the ship with the left stick and thrust with the right trigger, rather than the normal twin stick shooter type of control. The right stick can be used for quick bursts in the appropriate direction if you have an evasion unit installed.

The missions are quite varied so far, with races, escort missions and a few random tasks such as dragging meteors around. Hopefully the variation will continue as the game progresses. The story isn't exactly brilliant, but it's interesting enough to give a background to why you're shooting junk. Again, this could improve as I progress.

Interesting, sounds like something I'd like to check out further down the line.
