daftada Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 When I got my Wii U at launch I couldn't get any sound through my Sony AV amp. I've tried again after the recent update and still no sound when I choose 'surround' in the options. I've tried plugging it straight into two different TVs and still can't even get the sample sound to play in surround mode. Is this a general Wii U issue or is mine just broken? I'd have thought I coukd get some output in surround, even if it wasn't true 5.1. Any advice?
S.C.G Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Does your Sony amp support linear PCM? If not then that's why, if it does but you are still not getting surround sound then I haven't a clue. I have a Sony amp as well with HDMI pass-through and its been outputting surround sound from my Wii U ever since day one.

Tried different cables but still nothing. Guess it needs to go back to ninty then...
S.C.G Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 What is your setup like? Do you use HDMI pass-through like I do? I have the Wii U connected into one of three HDMI input ports that my AV unit has, then a single HDMI output running from the unit to the TV. Also what model is yours? Mine is a Sony STR DH500... I'll try and help as much as I can.
Dcubed Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Is your Wii U connected to your Receiver via HDMI? If not, there's absolutely no way for you to get surround sound (no, a HDMI to Optical adapter will not work). If your Wii U is not directly connected to your Receiver via HDMI, you will only get 2 channel stereo for Wii U games (Wii games can still get DPL2 via phono cables though); no exceptions.
daftada Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Thanks guys. The Wii U plugs straight into the av receiver. It's an old model, prob six years old. I remember some reviews at the time said it didn't accept sound through hdmi, and just assumed that was the issue when i got the wii u, but I've tried my ps3 and xbox and they both work. Also tried plugging the wii u directly into my tv but my wii u is still mute.
