M_rock Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 So lately I do not own a gamecube anymore since my wii is backwards compatible. I still own all my gamecube games, so until now I just played them on the wii. A few weeks ago I got a new TV, this one is a 16: 9 instead of a 4:3 TV. All my wii games support the new widescreen, so that's no problem, but everytime I boot a gamecube game, they get stretched. Now Is there any way to make it display at 4:3 by any settings in the wii? (I know it's possible to set the TV display to 4:3 by accessing the TV menu, but that's really annoying to do) I was actually expecting there would be a way to play the games in the original resolution as there is a way similar on the 3DS (pressing start while booting a DS game)? Any help would be appreciated :3
Andyliini Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I have the same problem, and I haven't found any way from Wii to play the games in their original format, so I have just used my TV's settings to make it look right. Hopefully Wii U will fix it, so the console itself can define, whether the game is 4:3 or 16:9. Then again, it won't play GameCube games, but I'm pretty sure it's easy to make your TV use 4:3 always, if you use a GameCube.
M_rock Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Thanks for the reply! The problem is I don't own a gamecube anymore :p
Konfucius Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) I think your TV is responsible for the stretching. As far as I can tell the Wii doesn't resize the games, you could easily find out if it's the Wii or the TV by changing the settings in the wii options to a 4:3 display; if everything is still stretched it's the TV's fault. Also take a look at your TV remote. Usually there's a button to quickly change the scaling; you shouldn't have to go through lots of menus for that. Edited August 29, 2011 by Konfucius

Is your Wii actually set to widescreen in the options? Because as said, even in widescreen mode, the resolution of the output remains the same as 4:3 - 640x480 (640x576). But the contents of the screen is squashed to give a wider view and then when stretched by the TV, it appears normal... and potentially a bit blurrier too. The GC never had a default option of widescreen - it was a game by game basis and a lot didn't support it anyway. It's got to be a TV issue.

I changed my wii settings to 4:3 and everything remained stretched, so I guess the TV doesn't recognise the size or something. I'll just manually keep changing the size format on the television then! Thanks so much for your help!
