S.C.G Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I have a Samsung HDTV that's about four years or so old, I have everything that can use HDMI running on that and everything that can't i.e Wii and older consoles running via a HDMI passthrough feature on my AV box, everything looks great on-screen and as for TV I use that PlayTV box for my PS3 and I've never had any problems with the image quality.
Pancake Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 Update: I bought the Panasonic TX-L37G10B (selling for £999 in Comet, got it £750 online). The digital terrestrial channels look pretty awful, but it's what i expected i suppose. I've not tried any films on it yet, hopefully they'll look good and redeem it a bit. The sound isn't fantastic either. Bit disappointed overall.
Nolan Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 That's a Panasonic LCD. Also, what are you comparing the sound too? Most people seem to expect built-in speakers to have the same jump in quality as the picture.
McPhee Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Assuming it's the same as last year turn Intelligent Frame Creation off (Menu - Setup Menu), turn Colour Management and P-NR off (Menu - Picture Menu) and make sure sound is set to speech (Menu - Sound Menu - Mode) and Speaker Distance to Wall is set correctly (Menu - Sound Menu). Might be worth turning Sharpness down a bit too (Menu - Picture Menu). There'll be more specific recommended base settings around for your set, i'm just going off mine here but they should be similar. If you're still not happy try tweaking Viewing Mode and Colour Balance. This is different between models but i know on mine Cinema and Warm look the best. If you still find the sound to be poor then you're going to need a seperate sound system. Pretty much all flat screen tellys suck for sound quality. If picture quality is still a problem when watching TV then try Freesat instead. Comet were running a free install offer when i bought my set.
Pancake Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Ok thanks. I was comparing the sound to my old fat telly i suppose, and that had built in speakers. Tried a dvd last night and was appalled, but then realised it probably looks that bad because my dvd player is old so it's not a HDMI one i suppose. Looking forward to getting my Blu ray, and actually seeing something HD on my HD telly! I'm not very hopeful about how my Gamecube is going to look on it though... Dammit i will miss my beautiful looking sharp games like Resident Evil.

McPhee Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 For the DVD player and Gamecube your best bet is to hook them up by component, Scart will look terrible. Then it's a case of tweaking sharpness until you're happy (but bare in mind it'll probably need turning back up for Blu-Ray and other HD stuff).
