darksnowman Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 "We may have lost D&D creator Gary Gygax this week, but we'll always have his legacy." This week, the gaming universe -- and anybody that cherishes the creativity of the human spirit -- mourned the loss of Gary Gygax. Gygax is best known as the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, a role-playing game phenomenon that has thrived for over three decades. There's no need for a Venn diagram to recognize the serious crossover audience for videogame fans and Dungeons & Dragons fans. Both mediums -- videogames and pen-and-paper games -- are about the wonder of escape. Thanks to the inability to replicate lifelike scenarios, the earliest videogames were pure fantasy that relied on massive leaps of imagination. And that held true for D&D gamers, required to conjure up battles with dragons in their collective imaginations while trafficking in character sheets and twenty-sided die. So, it's no surprise that the Dungeons & Dragons universe has served as inspiration for a number of videogames, dating all the way back to 1982's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Intellivision. http://uk.retro.ign.com/articles/857/857143p3.html IGN Retro have this feature up which includes a look back at some games Gary Gygax was responsible for: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Pool of Radiance Heroes of the Lance Curse of the Azure Bonds War of the Lance DragonStrike Eye of the Beholder Neverwinter Nights Warriors of the Eternal Sun Treasures of the Savage Frontier Stronghold Ravenloft: Stone Prophet Deathkeep Shadows of Mystara Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft Baldurs Gate Also got this four and a half minute piece on Gametrailers: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/10287.html IGNs is worth a read and GTs is worth a watch so get to it and lets hear your D&D experiences!
