Triple_C Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Just a few quick questions that could be a deal breaker for me buying a HD DVD player. Do they play regular DVDs? (I'm pretty sure this is a yes) Are there any players that record DVDs? Do they look significantly better than DVDs on a 720p screen? Are there any players which record to hard drives? How much would it be?

Varies depending on what you want it to do and the quality. £200+ for a stand alone player
Triple_C Posted November 4, 2007 Author Posted November 4, 2007 Thanks, I just did a quick google search (why didn't I think of it earlier?) and got this: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/22/toshiba_rd-a1_hd_dvd_r/ Nearly £2000!
triforce_keeper Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Thanks, I just did a quick google search (why didn't I think of it earlier?) and got this:http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/22/toshiba_rd-a1_hd_dvd_r/ Nearly £2000! Wow What an ugly bastard. For a more reasonable price: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3497129/Toshiba-HD-EP30-HD-DVD-Player/Product.html I believe it's a new model too, and 7 HD-DVD's free aswell, not bad at all!
Triple_C Posted November 5, 2007 Author Posted November 5, 2007 Should I get the one that Triforce Keeper posted and then buy a hard drive recorder?# EDIT: Just saw this: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3344276/Toshiba-RDXV47-DVD-Recorder-And-VHS-With-160GB-HDD-Hard-Drive/Product.html Seems like great value. (And in keepeing with the colour scheme, which does mattar to me!) £390 with the one TK posted. Though I'll end up with 3 dvd players. (I have a ps2) Edit#2: Are HD DVDs region locked?
Phube Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I hear Walmart are starting to sell HD-DVD player for like £100 (obviously $ equivalent). If so, that's the HighDef disc war won!
Charlie Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Are you sure you want to buy one just now? I think it's well worth waiting a year to so to see which format will win. History tells us that only one can succeed and it's usually the one which holds the most storage space (Betamax vs VHS) and Blu Ray can hold more....
Triple_C Posted November 5, 2007 Author Posted November 5, 2007 I guess I just want some form of HD on my TV. I guess I might just get an upscaling dvd/hdd/vhs kinda thing. (if they exist) like this: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3344276/Toshiba-RDXV47-DVD-Recorder-And-VHS-With-160GB-HDD-Hard-Drive/Product.html except with hd upscaling. New question: Can you see a difference between upscaled and regualr dvds?
