Dont forgot to say bloody hell for GBA beating PS3!

I hadn't even noticed either one, i'm still a bit stunned at that number of DS' sold in the US and the PS2 still doing so well for itself. Does the DS still get numbers like that in Japan?

Surely by now eveyone owns one? 22k for the Cube is pretty impressive as well. Couldn't help but lol at n/a for the Xbox. Poor little thing :D

Total Game Industry Sales Up 33% in March; DS Tops All (Again)

What a month and first quarter it's been for the video game industry this year. Year-to-date, industry sales are tracking ahead 54 percent! For March, the big winner was Sony's God of War II and on the hardware side, the DS has once again dominated all. Full results breakdown and exclusive commentary from NPD's Anita Frazier awaits...

We caught up with NPD entertainment industry analyst Anita Frazier immediately following the release of the data. She was impressed by the overall gains in all areas, both for March and Q1.

"In short, it was another outstanding month for the video games industry... with all categories realizing impressive gains versus last year, even when you take into account that the first quarter of this year includes an extra week as compared to last year," she explained to GameDaily BIZ.

The DS sales continue to shock us every month, but even the NPD was a bit taken aback by how successful Nintendo's dual-screen handheld has been. "Even with the roll that Nintendo has been on with both the DS and the Wii, the DS hardware sales figures are truly impressive," said Frazier. "Heading into April with the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, there is no signs of it slowing down. Even though this will be the first full year of the 'next-gen' console cycle, the DS continues to make headlines."

Many have wondered if the Wii can keep its momentum well into 2007, considering that the "big guns" (Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy) won't be released for quite some time. Frazier, however, is quite confident in the Nintendo console. "I don't see the Wii slowing down. There will certainly be big titles and big results from the other platforms, but it looks like the Wii fills a space in the market that it seems uniquely designed to own. I think we'll continue to see robust sales throughout this year," she said.

Sony's aging PS2 also impressed Frazier. "Though I have expected the PS2 to continue to have a long life into the next-gen cycle, March's unit sales of PS2 hardware showed growth versus the same month last year, and in fact it was the best-selling console system for the month. Certainly price point and ample retail inventory play into this, and it's a testament to the size of the more mass market consumer segment. Of course this bodes extremely well for the future of PS2 software sales going forward."

Finally, as for the PS3, Frazier seemed cautiously optimistic telling GameDaily BIZ, "At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we knew it could take awhile for the PS3 to ramp up, for many reasons. Although there is good content available for the PS3, the library of content that drives hardware acquisition is still building. Yes, the price point is bound to be a barrier for some segments of the potential audience. And the PS2 is still going strong. I think we all have to look at this over a longer period of time rather than thinking that every month's results determines the future. I've seen a number of announcements from Sony that bode well for the future of the PS3, and we all know that it will only take some killer content and hardware sales will respond."

Sony Spins US March Sales:

"According to NPD data, March 2007 showed a 24% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for the PlayStation brand in North America with total sales of $447 million, due in part to the addition of the PS3 platform as well as the strong launch performance of God of War II for PS2 at retail. While PS3 saw a month-over-month increase of 2% with sales of 129,638 units, we continued to find ourselves supply constrained in March due primarily to the shift in manufacturing focus to the PS3 PAL version to support the launch of the system in Europe. PSP also witnessed gains in March, up 2% over February with sales of 179,796 units. The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response. PS2 continued to be a strong performer in March, with unit sales of 279,866. On the software front, we were pleased to see sales increases from February for both the PSP and PS2. PS2 software showed a 29% increase with the launch of God of War II and PSP software demonstrated a 13% jump."

Nintendo respond with delight to the latest NPD data

Right on the heels of SCEA's response to the March NPD results, Nintendo has now issued its comments on the performance of the DS and Wii.

"Nintendo once again claimed the top two spots among the best-selling new video game systems in America in March... Despite widespread shortages for both systems, more than half a million buyers snapped up the portable Nintendo DS, and Wii was once again the top-selling new home video game console... Wii remains the fastest-selling new console in more than a decade, based on NPD sell-through information over the first five months of availability. So far this year, Nintendo has sold more video game systems than all other manufacturers combined."

"The message delivered by both Wii and Nintendo DS is the same one," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. "Innovation is compelling both current gamers and new gamers to experience a new way to play. Nintendo is bringing gaming back to the masses."

Nintendo goes on to note that while "shipments of Wii hardware are expected to grow this month due to increased production, demand for the system remains at unprecedented levels."
