  1. How can they not think that when they look at the sales of the games? The different/wacky ones do badly while sequels do well. They're a business and not a charity so they do need to consider the bottomline. Yet, despite this, they finance games like Wonderful 101 so it's not like they are totally ignoring this.

These are the games that people buy when they already have the system though and don't get me wrong, they fill an important part of the catalogue. But they are not going to make people who wouldn't automatically buy a Wii U go out and land their cash.

I agree with you about Wonderful 101. But Nintendo's top priority should be making a game that ticks all of the boxes and not just some of them. For instance W101 looks like a great game but I'm not going to be surprised if people think it looks too Japanese-silly for them to look into it further. Nintendo are going to need some smart advertising to get people to see fun it's going to be. And let's face it, based on their recent track record, they are going to fail badly at that.

  2. I'm all for this. There's already 9 first party titles coming between now and the end of the year. To pad it out further with new titles which are totally independent from ones you can see on 360/PS3/PS4/Xbone, it will benefit the console greatly.

For me, this is the most appealing thing that Nintendo need to do.

If you combine the following, then I think the wider audience will really get excited about the Wii U:

    - a game that only Nintendo could make

    - a game that could only be done on the Wii U

    - a game that brings new stuff to the table and is not just an evolution of a concept (could even be an established franchise, like Metroid Prime was)

I'm not saying all of Nintendos games have to be like that but SOME of them have to be.

  3. Well it does seem nice that they actually did E3 the way they did on purpose but I'm pretty shocked that they think that the normal gaming audience would prefer to see more sequels than different and whacky games.

My feeling about the Wii U lineup feels very much like the GameCube's at the time... Except that the GCN had Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil 4. It's just full of sequels and Mario fatigue.

One section I'm particularly shocked and a little worried about is that they Pikmin could only have been done on the Wii U, which is complete tosh. Either they are willingly ignoring the market or flat out lying to the investors there. Don't get me wrong, only Nintendo could make the game but it doesnt have to be on Wii U. In fact there are only 2 games on the system which wouldn't be possible on any others and by mid-2014 I still reckon that we will only have 3. I wonder how they are going to develop interest with such familiar feeling sequels.

  4. I know that DJ Hero was developed here in Royal Leamington Spa.

Shhh bob... there's a lot better game development going on in Leamington than that! ;-)

I think that it's a good idea if only for a bit of British pride. We find it hard to identify stuff that as a nation we're pretty world class at. Would it be good if people here actually recognised that both our games and special effects industries were up there with the best in the world?

If American's can celebrate in being the movie industry centre of the world why can't we do the same?

The UK games industry had a phenomenal amount of talent in it which has unfortunately been absorbed into many of the conglomerates. The gaming superheroes that started in their garages back in the Spectrum days got bought up the EAs and Sonys but they did/do produce some fantastic games.

When I think about the amount of beloved franchises that are exclusively British or were born in Britain, I do get a big smile across my face.

Another thing people might not be aware of is how internationally successful some games are. Both Football Manager and Total War sell bucketloads in territories that most of us don't even think really get games. Have you ever heard about games getting localised into Polish, Russian and Czech a matter of weeks after an almost global release (which already had all of the western european languages and Scandinavian ones too!)

That's some serious goddam game happy right there. MWAH!

  5. I guess for me it would be Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies for the 3DS. As for the Wii U there's still nothing I want for it so not exactly regretting selling that when I did.

As far as new games go, I feel the same. There are some great games on the 3DS that I want to catch up on as release prices are too high.

Between Nintendoland, Sonic Transformed and Lego City my Wii U time is kinda full up actually.

  6. Have only just got around to playing the demo of this as never been in the position to really try Fire Emblem. I'm taking a stance of only getting games that actually peak my interest now as both my time and money are less available.

My conclusion is that I need this game. I always new the gameplay was ace from the heritage of the series and previous reviews but you have to try something to see if it speaks to you right? Well the character writing, art and general vibe of the game have totally sold it to me. Plus I was always a fan of games like X-COM so I think the turn based strategy has been calling me out.

Now to find it cheap somewhere...

  7. Soooo.... I got this for my birthday and I'm exceptionally pleased so far. Really nice to hear the Japanese voice acting and the written script is characterful and genuinely funny at times.

Was quite surprised to find that the characters aren't all completely brain-dead and react to the kind of things that you notice, which most games would just glaze over.

Hoping the different progression paths are going to give it some replay value. Trying to just burn through it at the moment to find out the story and go back for some serious challenge. Have just met G-OLM on floor B and getting excited to see if anyone's going to die in round 2 of the AB Games!

Judging by the intro, I would say the probability is high....

One thing I concluded in the first round is that everyone should just hit Ally every time. That way, no one would every feel cornered to need to hit betray, everyone would hit 9 points at the same time and ta-dah everyone could walk out... But I'm sure the wabbit isn't going to make it that simple, IS HE.

  8. The ign article is strange. Its nonsense that the webcam had that much of an effect. You can buy hd webcams in shops for a couple pounds nowadays. Thats just the UK.

The webcams wont have played much of a role in the overall pricing. Maybe £20-25 and thats probably over valuing them. PSeye maybe £10-15 or so if Kinect really costs more with extra chipsets being involved(i am pushing costs unrealistically high i know). The most expensive parts will be the GPU and GDDR5 in the case of the PS4. The GDDR5 and likely hdd will decline slowest. I am also wondering how much will the cooling cost in version 1 of the PS4. Xbone uses a simply 2 heatpipe heatsink and a basic fan. PS4 might be like the PS3 slim v1.

In the case of the Xbone and its RRP its simply MS(and Nintendo) gunning for higher margins. Hence the DRM, larger box, clowd powa and everything they have been doing as of late. The pressure on the group is high which the most logical explanation i can think of. For Sony a 10% margin is high. For MS and Nintendo it would be several hundred percent.

Yeah apart from the fact that we know that's not the case with Nintendo as they make a slim loss on the Wii U.

  9. Yes, we knew about the games...and just that. We knew they existed, we knew NOTHING about them. It's a bit ridiculous to complain at that

Indeed. This was the strongest E3 showing Nintendo has EVER had

    Home console 3D Mario? Check

Home console 2D Mario? Check but DLC

    Mario Kart? Check

Smash Bros? On two consoles - Check

Zelda? HD remake and new 2D game - Check

    3D Pokémon? Check

Second Donkey Kong Country game in 16 years? Check

    Soon-to-be-release new IP? Check

    Later pseudo-new IP? Check (X)

Revival of critically acclaimed franchise? Check (Bayonetta)

Yet, all these things are not enough for the Internet. I swear, if Nintendo gave everyone a puppy with a Wii U, people would complain it's not enough.

Yes, there were few surprises, but welcome to E3. There never are many anymore

You say this, yet the Wii U has very little interest on the market and the people that control the money in the industry actually ignore that Nintendo exist most of the time. That's not the internet, that the reality of the market.

Nintendo are heavily failing at communicating why people should buy their console and I don't think that the lineup they showed near E3 is going to change that. It may be good enough for people that already own the system but it's not going to win over any people waiting for the other nex-gen consoles or many people that have dropped the cash already.

Nintendo need to wake up to the fact that unless they make the Wii U as exciting in terms of new experiences (and also communicate that fact) as the Wii then a very large group of potential customers are going to ignore it for the technically superior products. Why? Because they know that they have less limitations in terms of which of the games they want to play are going to turn up on that console.

And let's not forget the downward spiral of low unit sales => dwindling 3rd party interest => low unit sales.

Of course, all of these points could be totally moot if Nintendo is only interested in making a machine whose sole real KSP is being where you play Nintendo games. Forget the "new play styles" and the Miiverse stuff. From a certain perspective, Nintendo force customers to buy their machines to play their nostalgic franchises as you can't get them anywhere else.

  10. At the moment I'm still pretty happy playing Transformed. I enjoyed it far more than MK7 but hey maybe I just prefer the big screen ::shrug:

This is very much a "woud like to try before buy" for me at the moment.

  11. They never received money from the Canadian Government, I don't know why that fallacy continues to be spread around. There's plenty of true facts to discredit Dyack floating around.

Regardless Dyack is a fool. Silicon Knights would still be around if he didn't decide to sue Epic, Epic were never going to bother with a lawsuit, Dyack forced the issue. I wonder what kind of legal advice he received. His lawyer must have been an idiot.

They were meant to be getting money from the Canadian Government but it never got transferred because Dyack did not complete the process properly. Whether that was his fault or whether the last criteria of the system are completely unrealistic are yet to be seen.

Think there was a GI.biz article about this somewhere.

    EDIT: Gottit!

  12. I know a lot of you are happy about the conference but I think I can put my disappointment down to franchise fatigue. I don't want my gaming for the Wii U to be rehashes of gameplay from the GameCube era and as quirky as W101 seems, I don't want to drop £40 on it. Nothing i've seen or heard makes me think that any of the staples are going to be different enough for me to warrant buying those.

I don't feel like Nintendo are anything but miles behind in terms of services either which is what makes me look elsewhere. They have so much to catch up on and at the moment they are moving at a snail's pace.

  13. Been having major trouble streaming anything from the hotel in Tokyo but sounds like it wad a waste of time. What the fuck is going on honestly? How long can Nintendo take over making the fucking stuff again and taking 3 years to do it?

It's not the fact that there's no new ip, it's the fact that they're spending time making 5 times recycled games that nobody has much interest in anymore.

Frankly with a showing as it's sounds, it's like they don't even want to be in the industry anymore.

  14. I'm in a similar situation to Murr, just not with the mortgage yet ;-) [Wedding next Saturday btw!]

bluey and I feel similarly, like there are a lot of things that we want to do before we have kids that we haven't had the chance to do yet. Which includes learning how to feel happier in ourselves and simply having enough life experience to pass on. Neither of us feel ready but then everyone that I've met who has kids says that you never will do and actually the growing up that you do in the process is the important bit.

On a COMPLETELY different note, I thought I should tell you about my cousin. She got married about 6 years ago and her mum dies of cancer shortly after which was shattering. The two of them started working for a christian charity and effectively became missionaries shortly afterwards, with all of their income being from people in their community that sponsor them. Which is FINE. Until they had kids...

Now personally, I think it's a bit morally grey to bring up your kids on money that is being donated to a charitable cause. I think it's a misuse of that money and I genuinely feel that on some level they have trapped people into being ok with it as to withdraw support would be very unchristian. This was made much worse by her getting pregnant again straight after their first child. I thought that was taking the piss quite badly (especially as that meant only 1 of them was doing the actual work now) and supporting not 1 but 2 kids on other people's money.

Roll on 3 years later, my Mum tells me that my cousin is going into hospital for some major surgery and that she really needed our support. Turns out that she had inherited an extremely dangerous precursor gene from her mother and given the family history she had almost 100% chance of having one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer there is, making it even worse as it killed her mother in a long drawn out way. She was going in to have a double mastectomy, which is one of the most aggressive operations that is performed on anyone, followed by reconstructive surgery. She was absolutely amazing and thought about the kids the entire time and now has a healthy life expectancy.

Turns out this was the reason that she had had kids in cannon as she was working on borrowed time in a massive way. It completely changed my perspective on the situation and their choices. They are some of the best parents that I know and the kids are fantastic. Still don't like the way they are using other people's money but hey... very happy for them all now :-)

  15. I think EA, and quite a few people across the net, are in for a shock with sales of the PS4/720 upon their release. General consensus I'm seeing is that people think they'll shoot out of the gate with 1m units in the first week but that's really not likely, especially if they are both to come out at the same time

Totally agree. My finger in the air of what people want is that most are happy with their PS3 / 360 and that if a game could be made for the platform that they already own then they'd prefer it. Nobody is going to want to fork out £400-500 for a new system at the moment.

I'll be looking out for the companies going down the pan like they did at the beginning of this generation because they have ridiculous expectations of their games' sales and have to sell 5m units to break even.

  16. I'm surprised that a big company like Capcom would release a game digital only, I don't like the idea of full scale games being left without physical release. Does this mean that the Ace Attorney games are really niche, and not good sellers? But still all these obscure jrpgs get physical releases just for their fanbase...

See my post above about money and print runs.

  17. Well done chap, especially considering the circumstances. I remember people dropping hints, really REALLY unsubtle ones that genuinely put me off asking. I actually found it pretty offensive at the time.

Sounds like a lovely experience and glad that it was romantic... you know... like not hidden in a toasted cheese sammitch or something.
