  1. star trek (2009)

second vieiwing for me, after seeing it at the cinema, still a great film, good story, good action, good acting, a step up from the general standard of most blockbusters.

odd thing though, i was near tears right through the opening of the movie. this wouldn't be a problem, but in all honesty, it isnt very sad and im simply not a cryer. ive made it through much sadder movies before and not cried, so im putting this down to christmas excess and my cold.

7.5/10 great reboot to the franchise

  2. modern warfare 2 (single player) or hype in physical form

well, after waiting a year and a half since i first played the origional, the sequal finaly arives.

from the beggining, i was instantly dropped into familiar territory, but unfortunatly, i never really left. The major flaw of the game is the origional, it had gigantic shoes to fill, and clearly, it was no easy task. familiarity is no bad thing, certainly not when the familar is one of the best games of the past 5 years. it was just sad that the game never shook the feeling of being modern warfare 1.5 rather then a full sequal in its own rights. my main issues in familiarity i will spoiler, as they could spoil the experience for outhers

it seems that everything that felt so special about the first, the death of a main character, the dramatic semi cut scene boss kill, the "all ghillied up" like levels, being grabbed by a superior during a fall, it all felt similar.

of course, the action is still frantic, the set peices are heart stopping, the voice acting top notch, the story, though complete tosh, at least is told dramaticaly.

of course, its hard to avoid the subject of the airport mission, seeing as how much coverage its had. Personaly, I hated it. it was badly placed, id just been jumped a ravine on a snow mobile, dont preach to me about the human cost of conflict after having stuck in somthing so obviosuly fantastical and ott. it was uncomfortable to play, it didn't serve any great purpouse in the story, it was overly violent, i cant think i saw many moments in the actual game with such a degree of violence, but then, it lasted less the 5 mins of a 7 and a half hour game, to judge the full game, let alone the industry based around it is stupid.

so really the game seems in conflict with itself, on one part, it tries to be some semi realistic gritty account of war, but then it gives you snowmobile jumps and a character who wears a skull mask in armed conflict. it wants to be seen as its own game but sticks rigidly to the formula layed out by its predicessor.

    oh, and

    the musium unlockable was shit.

8.5/10 a great experience, but to fammilar and dissjointed to be conssidered truly great

  3. [PROTOTYPE] or one man apocolypse

ok, im not finnished thew game yet so this is merly my current impression. s'alrite.

the controles are ok, combat is satisfying enough, going on rampages gta style is very easy though ultimatly hollow.

my main gripe with the game is that its hard to really relate, or become emersed in the game. within minutes of starting id acidently killed dozens of people, its litteraly impossible not to. i mean, these are normal people, running around aimlessly and im accidently bisecting them, all the while, trying to fight the very things that are threatening them. usualy in games when given the choice, i play the good guy, i protect the people and feel the hero, here, i accidently slaughter them and theres no reprocussion. it dosent help that the people have all the self presovation instincts of a heard of lemmings (i realise lemmings are not actualy suicidal). its very hard to like a character who has merclessly slauthered thousands of innocents, and i mean thousands, post mission statitics recorded well over a thousand civilian casualties in a short mission, when i wasnt aiming to kill a single one.

enemy AI is also appauling. the millitary are on high allert looking for me, yet i can stand infront of a soilder, sprint verticaly up a sky scraper and yet the soilder dosent bat an eye lid? come on. also, how the hell can you lose some one in a tank chase, while he plows nochelauntly thought traffic and people?

belivability issues asside, the game is fun, in the short lived god mode sort of way. the games main problem, is making me care. i just dont. alex mercer is dull, his interactions, dull, his story, dull. the web of intrege mechanic seems to be ironicaly named, as it tellls a very dull and cliche story peice by boring peice, though then again, when your on a rampaige, story and character dont seem to matter much at all.

the big comparison going at the games release was against infamouse, a game i would comfortably call the better of the two.

    Current impressions

fun, but lacking long term appeal. like infamouse before it, the game lack pollish.

  4. I thought it came with water as well, I thought it was a level pack like the MGS one...disappointed to hear its not. They didn't even properly develop the PSP version they just oversaw it from what I understand, so no excuse really, although they did recently do that major patch did it change much?

it has the water, buy the level pack and that has the water, as well as some excelent levels and what not. loving it.

Just bought Dragon Age: Origins after my friend virtually gave it a standing ovation.

its a good game, but be prepaired for alot of long slogs. also, on the consoles, its VERY difficult at times.

I heard there's a trophy for having sex with every member of your party. The men and women.

thats not quiet true, theres like, 4/5 members you can shag, and it counts over multipul playthroughs.

in my game, i had one lover, and the ending reflected my love. felt nice :)

hang on, that makes it seem like i developed genuine affections for the woman, which i did not!

  5. right, my offerings to this disscussion.

    demon's souls

you dont know how unique it is til you play. its not just hard, its the way its done, the online mode is brilliantly clever, the leveling up is handled in a brilliantly, causing real thought in your actions. the fact every wepon handles uniquely is a major plus, i love that type of thing.

    flower

its been mentioned before, but flower is so different, the fact i started playing this in my darkest hour and it lifted me out is testiment to how beuatiful the game is.

    little big planet

possibly the most charming game ive played, its not untill you get through the single player campaign and begin building a level that you realise just how special the game is.

  6. Only been playing it a day, but it's pretty good so far. I do wonder if the PS3 version was ever playtested though. So far I've noticed that some of the cutscenes are jerky, the character hasn't spoken a line of speech 3 or 4 times (I've turned on subtitles do I don't miss anything) and one of my swords was solid grey since the texture hadn't loaded. And this is in one days worth of light playing.

They haven't ruined the game though, it's still very enjoyable.

    First Impressions: 8/10

yeah, it does that from time to time, id say maybe once every 5 or so hours it happened to me. hardly game ruining but it can spoil the atmosphear

  7. So anyway. I guess I just bought a PS3 (thanks JonSt). What PS3 exclusives do I need? Should I get Uncharted before I play Uncharted 2? Bearing in mind story is something I'm bothered about. Killzone? Resistance 2? These are games right? How about LittleBigPlanet?

    for my "big gets"

    id say the following

    ESSENTAL

little big planet - it takes a little while to "get" it, its not untill your making your own levels that you really appreciate it fully. that said, the main game is fantastic any way, and theres a lot of fun to be had playing outher peoples levels, if you filter out bomb survival levels.

uncharted - a supprise hit for me, expected a standard action game, got an amazine action game with one of the best executed stories in recent gaming.

uncharted 2 - simply couldent be better, improves in every way on the origional, and has very few flaws.

killzone 2 - singlepalyer is pretty good, but multiplayer is fatastic. the size of the matches is staggering.

    RECOMENDED

inFAMOUS - a really fun game, with great powers and a real feeling of being a super hero. the game does lack a little polish, but its still great fun.

resistance 2 - a great game, some awsome set peices that really do drop your jaw, maybe let down by a couple of strange decisions gameplay wise.

BUZZ! - Got mates? Go out drinking? this is the perfect pre piss up game, the game is short enought hat people not playing wont get bored, but long enough to make it a really hard fought battle. great fun.

MGS4 - a great for people who like the mgs serise, for outhers, it might have a bit to much story.

motorstorm: pacific rift - i deffy you not lot have a smile as you blast through the jungle in a mad race. both ott and tactical, pacific rift is a great title.

  8. dragon age origin or lord of the rings 2: this time, its sexy

yeah, pretty good. liked making a difference in the world, but i wasnt a fan of having to slog away for hours at the same quest, and alot of features felt rather pointless, not once did i have to bother laying the traps i made.

the character interaction was pretty good, i liked how my decisions changed how people felt, and i did like the fact that my character fell in love with anotuher, and the story actualy reflected this. im not sure why every one seems to think you can shag anything, i mean, i had two chances, and one was story based, hardly liek i was knobbing my way through town.

7.5/10 a rich world to explore but not always a lot to do, outher then watch the battles fight themselves.

  9. how to drive a tank and outher everyday tips for the modern gentleman

simply fantastic, well written, amusing, interesting and inspiring. it did have a couple of boring sections, but i love the whole "embrace life" attitude it has.

8/10 better then a self help book, particularly if you want to know how to drive a tank

    frankenstien

bloody hell that was depressing. the start was rather dull but it picked up,

7/10 very well written but just so deppressing.

  10. Then definitely yes!

Would you allow yourself to get kicked in the testicles full-force by Roberto Carlos, or let 3 of your closest friends have it happen to them?

them, no question, i take a gentlemans excuse me for no one!

would you shag a dog to save its life?

  11. my day?

i waited for more then an hour for a date who didnt show up, thena woman in her 70's started chatting me up, then work and my mate was being a dick.

then i went for a curry with mates so at least it ended well.

  12. i just picked it up at a rather reasonable 17.99

really liking it so far, its pushing me a bit, but always fair.

i fucking HATE claptrap though. who the fuck decided to make him that bit a twat?

  13. i have finnished, clocking in just under 50 hours for my first run. i did a a fair few side quests, and i made decisions the way i felt was right, which got me a pretty good ending. a fun game, but it did drag in places. never the less, i look forward to a second play through.

  14. I suck at this game. I've only just become a Grey Warden, and am going up some tower or other to light a beacon. I've gotten inside, but I get wasted by the first group of bad guys in there every time. I can't work out what I'm doing wrong.

turn the difficulty down, i just kept getting my ass kicked so about half way through, i dropped the difficulty a bit.

im right at the end now, should be done in a day or two.

  15. I have the whole Valley of Defilement left but ive been doing everything i can to avoid it. Think ill take another stab at it now

its stupidly hard, first time in the game ive actualy felt death was unfair, rather then due to my own mistakes.
