From looking at my facebook feed I can say with the absolute certainty of anecdotal evidence that people (not only the youth) have not understood the socialising rules for the last couple of months, and that must be a contributing factor. The rule of six is barely a change.
It was up to six of multiple households [outside only], or up to 30 if from just two different households [inside or outside].
Now it's up to six of multiple households [inside or outside].
I see the main problem as there being a serious lapse in communication about still staying 2m away from anyone not in your household. All over my social feeds I see friends sat next to each other, or adult children hugging older parents, kids from different families crawling all over each other, and so on, and so on. And then they're unironically tagging these posts with things like #socialdistance.
It's a massive failing from government that these people don't understand they're still breaking rules.

Its been a weird week! It probably doesn't sound like this should be in this thread, but two things happened:
- I finally got to see my consultant about my fibroids. Yup, ya gurl has got more that have grown after having a 9-10lb one removed in 2017. Now I've got two and they have no signs of slowing down. Just peachy (I actually have over 20 fibroids currently, but the rest have decided to just sit there and be chill). I was expecting a battle in care as my consultant didn't want to operate/do anything straight off the bat.
Our chat went really went and I got 45 minutes of one to one care. He's agreed that unfortunately surgery is the only option. So I have to make a choice of a Myomectomy(which is what I had in 2017, with a 7 inchish scar) or a full hysterectomy. Both will include bowel surgery. So its a huge risk either way and both will need my old scar to be reopened - eep.
I'm leaning towards a hysterectomy, which means complete infertility of course, I'm only 30 so I was surprised he agreed so easily, but the really matter is, I'm not going to get back and I'm already likely completely infertile anyway (its hard to test, but from my symptoms etc two hospitals believe this to be so). It doesn't seem like good news, but ultimately I cannot life the way I am now, so I'm really glad something is being done.Onto the actual good news:
- I had a job interview today! There's two roles available, but one isn't publicly available for another two weeks, so I had the interview for one of them and I think it went well? The manager was a lovely chap and we had a few laughs during our chat. I'm not sure how well I conveyed myself as I'm not the best at that, but the opportunity sounds really interesting! So I'm hoping for good things next week.
Mentally after two days of big life decisions I am now a slug.Was going to react to this post, but was in a dilemma over whether it should be "sad" or "like!"
I've never had surgery, and it terrifies me. I think I'll probably need knees replacing eventually and that's a far cry from anything to do with bowels. But my son has had plenty of surgery, and surgeons are just miracle people.

Like you say, it looks like a mixed bag - some great stuff on there, but, uh, films like Hachi as a Top 100 film? No offense to it, but I've never seen that film in all the Top 100 lists I've read! Also can't help but notice a lack of foreign films, and at a glance I'm not seeing any Ghibli films either? Might have just missed them skimming through though.
Either way, good to hear you're finding films that you're enjoying! Only one I haven't watched from those you highlighted as your favourites so far is Inglourious Basterds, really need to get to that myself at some point, because I really like all the other films you highlighted!
We watched Spirited Away yesterday, that's on there. :-) I think Howl's Moving Castle might be too. Cinema Paradiso is foreign I think (I think I remember we watched it with subs), but you're right - there's very few.
I've seen a lot of the films already so for some it's more of a check for me that they still hold up, and I'm glad that some of them do. Some don't though - Jaws was a bit of a let down, as was Mad Max.
Inglourious Basterds is so satisfying, get it cracked out!

I see you're saving for a house so this may not be useful now, but one of the best things I ever did financially was when I paid off my student loans I started paying the same amount into a savings account each month. I didn't let myself get used to have that extra money each month, and after a few years it's now an appreciable amount.

Close to the start of lockdown I saw this photo on reddit:
My wife and I have been working our way through it, in order, watching every movie. I'm not sure who came up with this list but there are some films on there only because of their historical value. Viewing them now without having seen them prior is not enjoyable. E.g. The Great Dictator, or Citizen Kane. There's also some stuff on there that is just guff. E.g. Yesterday we watched Hachi: A Dog's Tale, and Before Sunrise is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
The best ones we've watched so far (one per row!), IMO, have been Groundhog Day, Inglourious Bastards, No Country For Old Men, and Interstellar.

Which is a great deal when you factor in the £50 cashback. It's a bit of a steal really.
It arrived and it seems very nice. Almost overkill for what my daughter wants - super smooth Minecraft, Terraria and Roblox. My only issue with it is that the wifi seems a bit rubbish. I can stand 2 feet from the router and it "only" gets 50Mbps download speed (just checked my work laptop, and two rooms away it gets 200Mbps). Did some digging and apparently the realtek wifi card they use is a bit rubbish with certain routers. Not sure whether I want to tear it apart and replace just yet, or make her put up with slightly lower speeds than the rest of us get.

Clearly a difficult line to tread in this thread as you don't want to appear to be too gloating over how well things have turned out for you, when thousands have died, people have lost jobs, and people have really struggled with social aspects ....
But yeah, overall positive for me too. Working from home has been absolutely eye opening. I love the commute of 0 minutes. I love not having the hum of the office. I love stopping for a few minutes to have a chat with the fam. We've used Microsoft Teams a ton to stay in touch with other colleagues. I've started playing Fortnite online with a handful of work friends that previously wouldn't touch it. My productivity has increased. I've missed the free gym at work, but I've been going out for lunch on my bike - somewhere between 5-10 miles.
Financially I think we're better off because of the reduced petrol use, and other outgoings that have dropped. Takeaway consumption increased but other things seem to have balanced that out.
We have a family project to go up a load of peak district peaks that are over 1000 feet. That's fun.

Over 10 grand so far. :-(
Our stupid soil (which was basically like top soil for 6 feet down) meant paying out a lot of extra money for concrete to fill super deep footings. So that was cool.

Very nice. I'm working on the table where we eat dinner, so I'm packing away everything at the end of the day, and setting up again at the start of each day. My disconnect from work to home is pretty good because of that though.

Upgrading my WFH life over time:
I have my eye on a spectacular mechanical keyboard, but not pulled the trigger yet because our house extension is mid-build and I don't want to spend money that I may need if things go over budget. :-(

This is the only thing that's made me miss the office so far. 🙂

Last night I noticed that all the houses on our road had their windows all flung open. All except for smug Sue. I was feeling some serious envy, so your post on portable units was timely, after I was looking into them a bit in bed last night.

I bought this for my Kindle yesterday and read 8% of it so far. It's pretty good. The Twilight Saga was always a funny one for me because I enjoyed the stories and most of the characters but I wasn't a massive fan of the way she wrote. If I remember correctly, I found it off-putting because the conversations became somewhat repetitive. However, so far, this has actually been good and it's been interesting.
This is basically Edward's version of events in Twilight. So far, it really is like reading a whole new story and with a fresh perspective on something that's already been told, it's interesting. In fact, it's more menacing than anything. Bella's version was more "Oh my God, that boy keeps staring. I'm infatuated" and Edward's so far is "Look at all these humans walking about, they're pathetic. I could have their blood anytime". So far, so good but I think she'd be better doing New Moon considering Edward was gone for most of the time in that. Maybe she'll do a whole Edward series?
I read all the twilight books and then I read the early leaked version of this but I don't think I'll subject my self to the full 750 pages. To me the books were very moreish, but the whole time I was reading them it was obvious they were trash as well.
