  6. Games You Never Played

Nowadays I am going out of my way to try and play every classic game that appeals to me but in spite of my gaming library having encompassed over 200 games the fact that I only got involved in gaming from 2000 onwards and that was only on handhelds means that I missed several retro games, some of which I went back for but others due to licensing issues I never got around to play. Here are some well known games that I have never played or only experienced over the internet in my favoured format, one massive list: Final Fantasy Final Fantasy II Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble Star Fox F-Zero Pilotwings Final Fantasy V Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Banjo-Kazooie Goldeneye 007 Conkey's Bad Fur Day Jet Force Gemini Banjo-Tooie Blast Corps Diddy Kong Racing Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy Tactics Chrono Cross Xenogears Soul Blade Metal Gear Solid Resident Evil Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 3 Pokemon Snap Pokemon Puzzle League Pokemon Puzzle Challenge Super Smash Bros. Hey You! Pikachu! F-Zero X Paper Mario Mario Party Mario Party 2 Mario Party 3 Pokemon Colosseum Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (Yeah, despite being into Pokemon I never really got the home console stuff for it, by the time I got a Gamecube my interest in Pokemon had become main games only) Chibi-Robo Pikmin Pikmin 2 Resident Evil 4 Super Monkey Ball 2 Viewtiful Joe 2 Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut Star Fox Adventures Star Fox Assault Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Mario Party 4 Mario Party 5 Mario Party 6 Splinter Cell Jak II Jak III Sly Cooper Sly 2 Sly 3 Grand Theft Auto III Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Burnout 3: Takedown Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Halo: Combat Evolved Halo 3 (My experience of Halo 2 was only in multiplayer on a friend's copy in case anyone was curious.) Advance Wars (I was never really interested in strategy games) Advance Wars 2 Fire Emblem (Same deal, though I ended up maining Roy and Ike in Smash) Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (having gotten into Castlevania recently I will be crossing that one off my list at some point!) F-Zero Maximum Velocity Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team Star Fox Command Pokemon Ranger (all of them) Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time and Space Mass Effect Mass Effect 2 Uncharted Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 Sonic & the Black Knight Sonic Colours Sonic Generations Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Sonic Lost World The Last of Us Hyrule Warriors Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Fire Emblem Awakening Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney (plus sequels) Bravely Default Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair Demon Souls Dark Souls II Dark Souls III Bloodborne I think that's about it for now, I'm sure there are others. Note that I haven't played some of these games simply due to a lack of interest in their particular genres.
  7. I first heard about E3 from reading CUBE magazine back in the early 2000s. I was intruiged by this "E3" conference where CUBE were talking about the 2003 conference and how it normally is where big game announcements were being made. Those magazines helped me to get more involved in gaming culture rather than just playing games. A few years later I was starting to browse the internet on a regular basis (in about 2006) thanks to the advent of broadband and reading further issues of CUBE and NOM had got me hyped for the Revolution and wanted to know more about its upcoming games. 2006 was also the year that the rights to the official Nintendo magazine transferred to Future Publishing and then we got ONM out of it which I had bought a couple of issues of to read. I eventually found myself browsing their website for updates on gaming news and eventually followed E3 on a semi live basis for the first time, when we learned about the rename to Nintendo Wii for the first time. So yeah, I guess 2006 was the first E3 I really followed live, good one to pick from a Nintendo perspective though I didn't really watch the other press conferences at the time as I wasn't really interested in other consoles. So I missed Sony's infamously bad press conference. From that moment on I would be watching E3 live every year, especially after getting involved in forums. I was online to witness Nintendo's E3 2008 where they basically said "screw hardcore gamers, we're going with the casuals" and this was met with a huge outburst reaction from people saying that they were going to abandon Nintendo consoles from that point on. In many ways, I see that conference as a defining moment in Nintendo's history, they saw the sales figures of Wii Fit and basically doubled down on showing that sort of stuff, with "Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City" being their designated hardcore game even though I've alwayts seen that as a game with more casual appeal. Meanwhile at the Xbox 360 conference Bethesda revealed Fallout 3. It's no wonder a lot of people might have been interested in jumping ship at that point. I have started watching every conference where possible, including the Xbox conferences just to see what's going on on those platforms even though I know I won't be playing those games any time soon. Sony's conferences were often way too late at night for me so I'd either catch up or pull a late nighter to be able to watch the conferences live or have them on as sound in the background while I was in bed. Nowadays I am cautious over getting too hyped over a game as said games have never really met my expectations (looking at you Twilight Princess), that being said if they show a Metroid trailer of any sort then I'm going to be excited.
  8. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

It sounds like the development on that game was pretty Ruff.
  9. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Let's be honest, the original Ratchet & Clank games on PS2 are way better than the newer ones. The original games had something else that kind of made them stand out... The remake is a perfectly fine game but being made to tie in with a movie lets it down. The original game and storyline is WAY better. They so badly butchered Drek and the infobot commercials were some of the best parts about that original game. Anyway, regarding gaming lately I've been working on this bumper multi hour Zelda video that covers the entire franchise for its 35th anniversary.. As a result I need to capture footage so I am currently playing through again everyone's favourite Zelda game Yes that's right, I'm playing Skyward Sword. Just got Farore's Courage again and intending to play until Ancient Cistern before switching over to a completed file to get the rest of the footage.
  10. The Best Gaming Music Ever.

While it's kind of video game music but not at the same time I've found myself listening to a bunch of SiIvergunner remixes recently. While a lot of them are remixes of the same songs over and over again with different soundfonts there are some surprisingly good ones...
  11. General Retro Discussion

I remember when Kate Gray was writing for ONM she got a lot of stick on the ONM forums for her articles in the magazine... I guess things haven't changed much now!
  12. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

With Nier done and dusted and its similarity to Zelda games it got me in the mood to play some classic Zelda games again. That and the fact that I'm working on a big massive video video going over every Zelda game for the 35th anniversary! Played through Ocarina of Time to the halfway point and then switched to my finished file to fight the final boss again, did the same thing for Majora's Mask and did something similar for Wind Waker except that I continued my pre-existing file. Now doing the same thing as OoT for Twilight Princess. I must admit I had forgotten a lot of the early stuff in the game including the fact that the game has a Link's Awakening style shop where if you don't pay for the potions the bird pecks you to death!
  13. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

OK, so after my last update I've gone through Endings A-D of NieR: Replicant... not that I can really screenshot to prove right now other than my trophies because... Only so much I can actually copy from Twitter but I thought you all might want to take a look at this guy... This part also saw me screenshot it. Now, in order to talk about the most interesting part of the game, the story, I have to go into Spoiler Mode. So... here we go... I haven't seen the brand new Ending E yet but its supposed to tie the game more in with Automata so I will be getting on with that at some point.
  14. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Getting towards the end of my first playthrough of Nier Replicant... at least I think I am. Gone through all the locations as an adult now and done all the storyline stuff there. I'm also trying to get all the weapons and it turns out two of them are locked behind specific side quests so trying to do those... I must say though trying to get Machine Oil was an absolute pain... I think there's a lot of credibility behind this idea... nobody tell me if I'm right about this or whether I've just spoiled a huge plot twist by wondering about this. It would call a lot into question about these things... Oh and... Someone on the Nier team is a huge hentai fan... actually it might be Yoko Taro himself! There are moments in the second half of the game which caught me completely offguard because of the way they are framed... you just don't see certain character deaths coming!
  15. The Best Gaming Music Ever.

How convenient, that was the next game I intended to post music from in this thread! Yeah, that track's awesome (though imo the remastered version is better). As are these:
  16. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Wait... that's a real game? Um... OK... Anyway, sunk a lot of time into NieR Replicant over the past couple of days and one thing is becoming very apparent... this game is trying to challenge the conventions of video games by imitating them in some ways. It has segments that call back to Resident Evil, Diablo and top down shooters among other things. But most of all, there's one particular game that I think this game is trying to lean on heavily towards. Let me give you this scenario.... young boy who you name at the start of the game gains a magical companion and goes on a quest to retrieve multiple mystical objects to help stop a major villain's plans. He has to go through labyrinthian dungeons and fight a boss at the end of each one in order to retrieve these objects. After obtaining all these objects, the villain launches an attack on a main town and the young boy comes face to face with the villain. Despite his best efforts, the villain wins and puts the world under his rule and order. The young boy must become a young man before he has the chance to be able to turn the tide, with the adult protagnist having a wider range of abilities than their child self. Sound familiar? If you thought "Ocarina of Time" you;d be right, but Nier Replicant would also be the correct answer because I wrote this generic enough for it to apply to both games. e.g. Navi/Griome Weiss, Link/NieR and the Shadowlord/Ganondorf. The fact that both protagonists have both child and adult forms with the adult having expanded abilities (in NieR's case being able to equip more weapon types) is quite obvious. But I think the biggest wink and nod towards Zelda is... this! Just as I thought the game was starting to remind me of Zelda a lot, the game goes and puts a straight up Zelda reference in there... the jingle that plays is also extremely similar to the point where only one note is different. He even does the twirl around... actually, lets put this in video form... In spite of the Zelda paralells there seems to be something afoot. I thought it was pretty strange that the game flashed forward by 1000 years and everyone still seemed to be the same age. But the game gives further confirmation of this by strongly hinting at something in the Forest of Myth and then during one transition, instead of a page from Yonah's diary playing it showed a black notebook instead with a more complex date and year which talks about some sort of operation... what? It was a one off at the time but... come the adult portion Yonah's Diary entires don't seem to show up as much anymore and the loading screens are more of this black book. I suspect something like a Matrix or something along those lines where this entire world is in-universe virtual. It would line up perfectly with the whole game making reference to different video game genres. Anyone who has played this before will obviously know what that actually is so if there's anyone here who did play the original Nier back in 2010 then please DO NOT TELL ME what actually happens. I want to try and discover what happens myself. Some characters don't appear to be who they said they were and one of the companions has undergone a complete transformation. In the meantime, here's a few Twitter highlights of the last two days, I did make quite a significant amount of progress... I do think this game does have the slow beginning problem that also plagues the likes of Twilight Princess, Kingdom Hearts II and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. But the story certainly seems to be picking up the pace and I'm intruiged to see where it goes... the thing is though I've now heard that you need to collect all the weapons in order to see all the endings so I'm having to farm for money to buy the weapons at the shops that I don't have yet. They're pretty expensive now!
  17. You know, I've been thinking about things and I realise... sometimes you have to play bad video games to help appreciate the good games better. I can understand only wanting to play good games, naturally we all want to enjoy our time with the games we play. But that can lead to a very high standard in terms of what is acceptable, so the "lesser" games among the pile of good games you're playing might be considered bad games if its the only thing you've ever played. For that reason I'm kind of glad I made a significant amount of buying mistakes during the first 10 years of gaming or got lumped with additional games when getting a console or a specific game (Crash Bandicoot Fusion, Shadow the Hedgehog, Enter the Mastrix, Minority Report etc)
  18. Court lawyers should really learn how online video games work lol.
  19. Good luck with this challenge. I'd been following ClementJ642 on Youtube and he did videos on every single Sonic game that's ever been released and I do mean EVERY one. The whole project took over 10 years to fully complete!
  20. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Nice, I finished that game recently and really enjoyed myself. Though, the game does have some of its issues... Anyway, onto my current main game I'm playing, NieR; Replicant. Made a good amount of progress in the game, made my way through The Aerie and finished the boss battle at the end after meeting Kainé for the first time. Played a bit more and now having to deliver letters for a really annoying old woman , just to see what happens if I do. Very manipulative woman that... Dang you hidden obscure ladders! Grimoire Weiss is my favourite character in the game, he's just so witty! I didn't quite make as much progress as I would have liked though as I was finishing up Soulcalibur VI's Custom Character Tournament that I've been doing on Youtube recently. Did a few Tweets with tournament highlights in an attempt to hype up the final! And now.... here it is! EDIT: Oh yeah, a friend picked up Hollow Knight recently so it inspired me to go back and do some of the side stuff to try and get 100%. Collected a few more charms and I'm going for them all now, this included unlocking the Grimm Troupe DLC as well as finding the Godmaster DLC in the process. I also managed to find a few secret rooms that I missed when playing through the game and that allowed me to pick up missing grubs, taking the Symphony of the Night mindset into this one certainly helped!
  21. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Most people, focus on beating one or two games in a single month. Hero-Of-Time: 100%s 6 games in one single update Anyway, I've just got Grimoire Weiss in NieR Replicant. Seems like a fun character though not much has happened afterwards. I can't even buy the weapon upgrades at the shop because NieR is not in the mood for it... well, that's certainly different!
  22. Your 2021 Gaming Diary

Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair is on my "to buy" list at some point. Definitely very interested in playing it at some point considering the praise it got. As it happens though late April is when the first 2021 game coming out that I was interested in playing comes out... so I have now started on NieR Replicant Ver 1.22474487139.... Birth by Sleep Final Chapter Prologue Ultimate Prepare to Die Edition Deluxe + Bowser's Fury & Knuckles featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series with a New Funky Mode. Better with Kinect sensor. OK in all seriousness the bolded part is all this game is called so far. I appreciate how the prologue very quickly lets you get into action and fight the enemies as well as using all your abilities... I was wondering why I was levelling up so quick and already at Level 30... turns out this is just the prologue and the game is teasing all the abilities that you will get in the future. So now I'm in the proper overworld... I must say parts of this game actually remind me of Shadow of the Colossus, mainly with the shadowy creatures and the tone of the landscape. That's as far as I've got so far as I realised I needed to attend to uploading this particular Youtube video.... the semi-finals of the Soulcalibur VI Custom Character Tournament. Only four fighters remain... whose your money on?
  23. Football Season 2020-21

FIFA's lootboxes being in game gambling is bad enough but it seems to be more systematic of the whole sport's obsession and acceptance of gambling. Perhaps this should be football's equivalent to the Star Wars Battlefront II fiasco and a springboard for a platform for change in the sport. Because it seems like the rot runs deep within all parties of the sport, not just the big clubs if this Guardiola interview is anything to go by...
