  1. revoution controller

This controller will be the connection that finally allows strategy games to be fun on consoles. Strategy games always require a mouse, as they suck with an analogue stick. The Freehand controller will be like a 3D mouse. It may be even better!
  2. Nintendo's Role in Sony's Fall

I found an interesting article on about.com that investigates one possible route the console war could take. The title "Nintendo's Role in Sony's Fall" explains it all really, but Microsoft is still heavily included in the equation. Basically Sony loses out due to stiff competition in the home console market from Microsoft, competition in the electronics market by companies like apple, and competition in the handheld market from Nintendo. The reason that there is no competition in the home console market from Nintendo, is that Nintendo manages to successfully distinguish itself from the competition allowing itself to co-exist with either Sony or Microsoft's machines. The writer does say that he is speculating less accurately than an analyst, but it's still interesting to read. He does also take into account other possible outcomes that could affect his theory, like Sony managing to turn around it's proffits. It's worth a read.
  3. CUBE Magazine Discontinued

I got bored reading all of the official Nintendo mags years ago. I just read Egde and Games TM for the better quality articles. Anything I read in NOM, NGC or CUBE is just the stuff from the net but a month late. I'm not really fussed about games magazines unless they give you a demo disc, which Nintendo one's never do. Demos in the future are likely to be done through the Rev. download service, so I deffinately won't be buying these magazines.
  4. Play control system on Revolution...

As long as it means we'll get games of any age restriction on the console, I don't have any problems.
  5. Exclusive FPS for Revolution by UBISoft!!

Nintendo need exclusive FPS, as they didn't really have a porper exclusive FPS for the Gamecube. There was Geist, but that wasn't of the same standard of Halo etc, and Metroid Prime isn't an FPS. If Nintendo have an in-house FPS, and exclusive by Ubisoft, plus another (killing day?) from Ubisoft and then something from Epic, and then Metroid Prime 3 too, i will be happy. I know I said Metroid Prime wasn't an FPS, but Prime 3 is likely to use traditional control style due to the new controller.
  6. 13 time weaker than the xbox360?

A sports car has less power than a lorry, but it's also smaller, so therefore it's performance is greater, and it's faster. It's not the power that counts, it's how you use it. I really don't care about specs as long as the games can rival the competition graphically. If Nintendo choose to reveal just screenshots and videos and no specs, I'll be happy, because specs just annoy me. Gamecube was technically less powerful then the xbox in terms of specs, but in terms of engineering, it was just as good. You only need to look at games like Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime to see.
  7. Mark Rein talks about Revolution again!

I reckon Mark Rein was tipped off by Microsoft. There's no way any established games developer would talk like that without the influence of money. Or maybe he was drunk or under the influence of drugs. Who knows. This does sound like a bit of a suck up though. At least Epic are likely to get a development kit, and hopefully run Unreal Engine 3 on the Rev.
  8. Make tha cool Revolution name!

I think that console manufacturers should name their consoles to represent their stature. the Nintendo Misunderstood The Microsoft Waste of Money The Sony Dissapointment Here's just a few I thought of.
  9. psp - innovative gaming device of the year

The Golden Joystick awards really have lost the plot over the last few years. It was much better when it was just in Games Master. Everything there is either extremely predictable or just stupid.
  10. Developer Fanboyism

And it doesn't have a Hard-drive either. Nintendo consoles are always small because they're designed to be games consoles. Sony are making a Blu-Ray media player, and Microsoft are making a scaled down PC. This is why they are sooo friggin huge! And to think that the 360 also has that massive power adapter is even funnier. From what I hear about Nintendo's new development techniques (cupe-mapping etc.) It sounds like they are actually trying to find new ways to make games also. The current method of making fancy graphics is just making development get more expensive. OK I'm rambling on about off-topic stuff now, so I'll stop now.
  11. Developer Fanboyism

His judgements are based on speculation only. Considering that Epic concentrate on shooters, it's surprising the controller doesn't interest him. Nintendo are always going on about how good it'll be for FPS games, and people who've had a go with the controller have played a modded Metroid Prime, and they all say that it's really good, and far easier and more accurate to use than 2 thumbsticks. I don't know whether this guy has had a go with the controller or not, but I would guess not. Another bit of speculating he does is that the Revolution is going to be inferior in graphical power. I'm sorry, but despite the new controller being so amazingly cool, I highly doubt people will buy the Revolution unless it has good graphics too. He's probably looked at the size of it and decided it must be inferior due to size, but the Gamecube was the smallest console when it came out, and it's power was very close to the Xbox's. Nintendo have never ruled out graphics they've simply said that they aren't the be all and end all. They've also claimed that Revolution will be able to compete graphically with both 360 and PS3. Other reasons I can suspect his comments are like this are because Epic are making Gears of War for Xbox 360, and they're being payed loads by Microsoft to say shite about the rivals, maybe. Also, Epic must be making a lot of money by distributing their new Unreal Engine 3 to other developers, and that is currently one of the best graphics engines available. So it would make sense for him to promote graphics over anything else. But to assume Revolution won't have good graphics based on the controller etc. is stupid. What's even stranger is the fact that he thinks that graphics are still the way forward. It's already been proven that graphics aren't working anymore in Japan, so it can't be much longer before it's obvious in the West. The slump in sales in Japan is due to lack of innovation in games, because all developers want to do is make the same games, but prettier. That just doesn't sell. If you look at the past, then you'll see that gaming has always had growth due to innovation. 2D - 3D gave growth, Analogue control gave growth, And "Gimmicky" peripherals like eye-toy and dancemats also gave growth. Nintendogs, one of the most different and gimmickey titles on the market has quite obviously created growth, as have many other obscure DS games like brain training. In fact, the gimmickey games have been the reason for the majority of DS sales. So looking at how the gimmickey DS is faring next to the graphics hungry PSP, I don't think it's fair to say graphics are the way forward when quite clearly, that isn't proving true. Like I said earlier, he's just having a good time financially, and therefore is advertising his game "Gears of War", advertising the platform "Xbox 360" and advertising his development tool "Unreal Engine 3". I'm sure, given the chance to play the Revolution, and/or see it's graphical capabilites, his comments may change. But now I'm speculating, because I've never played or seen the Revolution in action, but I'm not saying that it will have great graphics, I'm saying it should do based on word of mouth from Nintendo themselves. People have always criticised Nintendo's innovation, but then they've always been proven wrong. Analogue sticks, touch screen, and now freehand. Bloody hell, that was a proper essay, pitty I can't do the same thing with the work that actually matters. [uPDATE] I've just been watching the video, and it's deffinately like that guy has been payed by someone to slate the Revolution controller. His comments are incredibley childish, and some of his reasons are stupid. He said that the analogue stick add-on will make your thumb ache. I don't know what kind of strange hands he's got, but that is the same as the Gamecube alalogue stick, and I've never had problems. Then he asks how many people in the audience own just a Gamecube, and then says "thats less than 10 percent, hard to make a business on less than 10 percent". What a complete tool! Has he ever looked at a little thing called statisics? Microsoft have a larger protion of the market, yet they've never made any money from the Xbox. The trueth would be to say that they've made a LOSS! Sony have made a proffit, but it's still tiny compared to their market share. Then you look at Nintendo, and they make the most proffit compared to market share. I call that good business. Microsoft and Sony sell more, and make more money, but at the end of the day, they waste it on over-expensive games. By being careful with their money and developing cheaper games more innovative games, Nintendo have a greater proffit. So unless Xbox 360 makes a proffit, I can see Micro$oft leaving the industry first. Nintendo is always going to last because they make proffit, Microsoft don't and now neither do Sony. This guy's going to be surprised in 10 years. Also, for anyone who hasn't watched it yet, he pulls out of his bag both an Xbox 360 development kit, and an xbox 360 controller. This just makes me believe that he's advertising for Microsoft even more. If I was the guy on the far right, I would have nailed that guy to a wall with my comments. But I liked at the end when they were asked which games they are looking forward to most, the guy on the far right said Smash Bros Revolution ONLINE, and then got a bigger cheer than when the other guys said Gears of War and Oblivion. Also I liked how he said that he used to look forward to Perfect Dark Zero, but not anymore. I could go on about that, but that's another story. If you read Edge's article on X05, and their comments about Perfect Dark Zero, that's the same as my opinion.
  12. Molyneux again on the Revolution Controller

Well Nintendo did the same thing with the stylus in the DS didn't they? They brought the advantages of the mouse to a handheld, and Black and White is being developed for that. Now they've done the same for a home console, but they've also improved it as well. Making it fully 3D, and not confined to 2 axis. I can deffinately expect Black and White to make it's way over to the Rev, along with many more gmaes that were previously not suited to consoles.
  13. Physics Processor - a technical question

The laws of physics in a game are a bit like the laws of physics in the real world. In the real world, the laws of gravity keep you on the ground. In a computer game, grogrammers can decide what amount of gravity there is going to be It can be realistic, or crazy low grav. This is physics in it's simplest form (I think). If I'm not mistaken, a physics engine is designed to allow you to interact with the game. Half-Life 2 is a great example. There is a large amount of interaction with character and objects, and this is handled by the physics engine. Curretnly physics engines are incorporated into the graphics engine. The graphics are handled by the GPU, and therefor there is only so much allowed for a physics engine. By having a PPU, you have a new seperate processor dedicated to physics. Now the GPU can handle purely the graphics, and the seperate PPU can organise the physics. I beleive that physics is the real way forward in games after graphics and it's going to become ever more important. With the new Revolution controller, a PPU could mkae the interaction with the game much more detailed. Lets look at an FPS for example. Currently in these games, you shoot someone, they fall to the ground (physics). You can pick up their gun and fire, and it's going to have a different affect to another (physics). What can you destroy with a gun? Well in most cases other characters. You can make bullet holes, and there is of course the game favorite of destroyable crates, and exploding barrels. For most games that is about it. You do however get the occasional destroyable piece of scenery, but it's quite basic. Physics in the next generations to come should get better and better. Allowing you to blow a hole in any wall you like. Destory a pillar and watch a building fall on you opponent. Of course this can be applied in many differnent games in different ways. I'm not sure but a physics engine may also be able to control things like the number of characters on screen (correct me if I'm wrong) The PPU, if true, is going to give the Revolution an edge on the competition, I think. As neither of the competitors has one, they may not be able to achieve the same physical feats so easily, if at all. To my knowledge this is what a physics is, and what the ppu could do, though I'm pretty sure I'm 80% right. (If anyone has a greater knowledge, please correct my statements)
  14. Demos

I would have to say that the only thing that worries me about demos is the memory on the Revolution. This application would be fairly staight-forward on the Xbox 360 as it has a 20GB HDD to save demos on. The Revolution's inbuilt 512MB is a bit laughable in comparrison. I mean, my USB memory key store 1GB, and it's tiny. I also got it for only £40 which is still way more than the same amount would cost if it was built into the Revolution. I really do hope that the Rev can have an HDD attachment somehow. Although many people would think it's pointless unless you're going to use it for media like Microsoft do, but you could have a reasonable amount of demos saved onto it. The only other option with lack of a HDD is for the actual memory to be used to store simple code, and then the console actually stream the demo from a server. The problem here is that it would be expensive and harder to maintain. It is a puzzling dilema. Unfortunately ther are still many little pieces left to solve in the Revolution puzzle. Hopefully some will be resolved soon. I hope that we get some this October when Nintendo spill the beans on wi-fi.
  15. Famitsu Most Wanted

When you consider that Britain is also the land of Chavs, a race of people who's hobbies include being 'ard, commiting minor criminal acts, and watching the footie, then you will understand that there will never be a chart of most wanted games as culturally sophisticated as that of Japan. (Please note that this deffinition of a chav is a very rough estimate, but enough of you should have experience of their behavior to make your own judgements) P.S. I hate Chavs if you haven't already noticed. If you say you're one, I won't believe you as there's no way a full-on chav would ever use these boards. People on here actually have a brain.
  16. Joanna Dark gets on FHM cover!

Playboy have already done this. They had a section of computer-game-characters last year, and last month they did it again. Don't ask me to post a link for this news as I can't be arsed to find it, but I seem to remember seeing it on the Edge website.
  17. IGN has gone Krazy

That is so pointless. It's a really cool idea, I'l grant that honour. But the problem is that, considering it's size, it's going to be expensive, and it's going to be limited in what it can do. To be hoest, you can mimic the actions of a shotgun without that add-on. The controller can sense which way it's moving, so why not use that feature to mimic the cocking reload motion of a shotgun in thin air? As cool as all of these mock ups seem, I just think that they're a waste of time. We're likely to get this kind of thing made by a 3rd party though, and it'll be crappy no doubt.
  18. Revolution and shelf space... an important issue...?

Gamestation aren't as bad as GAME when it comes to shelf space. PS2 still has the most, but Xbox and Gamecube both have their fair share. The same goes for PSP, DS, and GBA. Heck, Gamestation still have shelf space for retro consoles like the NES and Genesis, and they generally have better deals anyway. Plus they actually give you a decent amount of cash for trade-ins.
  19. Demos

It would be nice to have access to more demos. Demo discs are almost the sole reason why OPM or OXM sell decent amounts every month. NOM on the other hand prefer to give us crap like inflatable nintendo characters. There is one small flaw in you observation though. We don't actually know that the Revolution uses DVD discs. We know it can play DVD movies, but they haven't said that the games will come on DVD roms similar to PS2 and Xbox. I highly doubt that they will be bog standard DVDs. Nintendo went with the mini CDs on the Gamecube to avoid piracy. They are likely to do the same with the Revolution. Though the Rev will use 12cm discs as opposed to the 8cm ones used in the Cube, they are most likely going to be proprietry discs that can only be used on the Rev and are made in special factories. However, I wouldn't rule out demos, as the Revolution download service is likely to allow the download of demos straight to the console without having to buy the crappy magazine with it.
  20. Revolution and shelf space... an important issue...?

I'm not sure whether Sony does buy more space in the shops. I can imagine that Microsoft would do this. The sad fact is that the Gamecube just isn't selling anymore. My local GAME no longer has any Gamecube games on the wall  It's all on one tiny little floor shelf! PS2 meanwhile has almost half of the shop to itself, and then Xbox and PC has an equal ammount, followed by the 2 stack PSP, and then the 1 stack of DS, and 1 stack of GBA. I can quite easily understand the reasoning behind the larger area occupied by the PSP than the DS. The DS shelf quite simply has games on it with only a few essential peripherals. The PSP shelf has games (which are in taller boxes) UMD movies, Memory sticks, and a countless number of pointless peripherals. If you took away the peripherals, the UMD movies and the memory cards, you would be left with the same shelf space as the DS. PS2 owns half of the store because it owns half of the market, simple as that. DS sales have dropped since launch due to lack of decent games available. Now we're getting Nintendogs, which I cant guess will make the DS occupy a larger space in the store, and when Mario Kart DS comes, well I'll let you figure that out. DS sales will pick up and the DS shelf will rack up next the the PSP shelf. Answering your question about the Revolution, I don't think there's any way that it will be pushed asside by the PS3. The new console always gets to the front of the store, and Rev. is likely to launch after PS3, so it'll move into that space when it's released. The PS3 will probably have a larger section when the Rev. is launched simply because it will have been out longer and have more games available. Revolution should launch with 2 shelf stacks in my local game, and by that time Xbox 360 should have 4, and PS3 3. The question is, which way will it go from there? Well it all depends on sales, and the current layout represents the current sales. If that isn't true then I've judged it all wrong.
  21. Sony is going to win this next-gen.Why?

I've heard that Sony are going to bring out a "wand attachment" for eyetoy. Though this immediately sounds like the Revolution controller, I highly doubt it will be anywhere near as advanced. It's just going to react with the already existing camera, and is unlikely to feature depth perception, and tilt sensing abilities. The eyetoy is simply going to be programmed to react to this specific device rather than every slight movement of your body. But at the end of the day, this is still limited to eyetoy games.
  22. 1 = 0.9999999...

Oh, I'm sorry that it didn't make any sense for you written in my pigeon English. I just wrote a crap load of stuff in a short space of time, I don't give a shit about how good the English is. No I didn't study English A-Level, I wasn't interested, simple as that. That doesn't make me illiterate when I need to write something properly, but literacy isn't a top priority on these boards is it? OK, so having a go at someone for being younger isn't fair, but it's so fucking obvious that someone at that age isn't going to have a complex knowledge of maths. That's year 9 for God's sake, they've only been doing algebra for about year. Plus I simply hate smart arsed little shits!
  23. Polish 18-month-old runs over family members in car

It's Okay to laugh at stupid deaths. No that's not true. Only stupid un-intentional suicides are allowed to be funny. Well in this case nobody died, so it's Okay to laugh. At least I think i is. Anyway, you want funny deaths eh? Check out the Darwin Awards. Given to people who killthemselves in the funniest of ways. There are some hilarious endings to some of these people's lives, and they are all self inflicted deaths.
  24. 1 = 0.9999999...

How many 9's are there after the decimal point? If there's a set amount, then all of his equations are wrong. For example: Let X = 0.999 • Then 10X = 9.99 Subtract X from each side to give us: • 9X = 9.99 - X but we know that X is 0.999, so: • 9X = 9.99 - 0.999 or: • 9X = 8.991 Divide both sides by 9: • X = 0.999 However, the ... after every number suggests that the 9's go on into infinity. Then we get the problem of infinity. The problem is, you cannot enter an infinate number into an equation and get an exact answer, you can only make an estimate. Take pi for example. This is used to find the area of a circle. To use the full number, you wouldn't get the calculation done, because the decimal places go on for infinity. Scientist have tried to see how far they can go before it finally ends, unfortuneately it's a random pattern, so goes on forever. They've mangaed to get it to several million decimal places, and it just keeps going. So to make things easier we round the number up to 3.14. This way, a calculation can be done easily. However, you will never get the exact number you require. But to get it perfect does not concern us, as it's a waste of our time. To round something up or down, simplifies it to the point we need. The only people who need to be precise in these cases are people like NASA. They needed to get the calculations for the mirror in the Hubble space telescope accurate to millionths of a milimetre in order for it to work. We only need to calculate as far as we can see. So to get it more accurate than say several hundred atoms either way would be wasteful, as there's not much an atoms difference is going to make in comparrison to what our own eyes see. OK this my be confusing, but basically, you only need as many decimal points as necessary to your bounderies. If you're measuring the area of a circlular section of say a clock face, you aren't going to be more accurate than a milimetre at most, because it isn't necessary. So we come back to the statement of 1 = 0.99999999... No this is incorrect! 0.99999999... going on into infinity never ever reaches the exact value of 1. It get's extremely close however. So close, that it isn't any cause of our own concern. Therefore at this stage, you can round it up to the nearest whole number "1" and say that's it's 1. In actual fact it isn't, but you can say it's pretty damb close. It's so close in terms of human thinking, that it really doesn't matter. We don't need to know how many billions of 9's there are after the decimal point as that's close enough to 1 for us to just call it 1 for simplicity. It's still not 1, but it's really damb close. The connection cannot be proven with an equation, simple as that. X will always equal the same number. Otherwise, it isn't an equation. Equations are all about equality. if this guy put that crap down in an exam, he'd get a big fat 0 marks, because an equation must be equal on both sides, so the value of X cannot change. That is impossible! This guy is only 14, he's only been doing algebra for about year or two, so his knowledge is limited.
  25. this generation's best games?

I've found this generation dissappointing. I was willing to fool myself for a few years, but I really was dissappointed on all fronts. I'm going on the game that has entertained me the most this generation, and that it Super Smash Bros. Melee or the Burnout games. There are plenty of good games, but most of them have just bored the pants off of me. I just hope I don't get the same treatment next gen.
