Hello

I'm looking at installing a wireless network at home - the PC, Laptop, NDS would all need to connect to the net via this. I have identified two possible routers:

This:

or this:

But i'm a bit confused by the connections. I already have a USB modem (a cheapy unnamed given away by the Broadband IPS), which I don't mind scrapping anyway. But on both of these I can't see how they would connect to my PC - the ***'d one seems to connect direct into the telephone line via RJ45.

Anyone have any ideas. The only spare connection on the bank of my PC (other than quite a few serial-style ports is like the one in the diagram) - or USB ports.

Your other computer probably has an internal adsl modem, to which the telephone line connects. The connection is simple. Plug the router in the telephone line, and connect the other devices wirelessly(USB dongle, PCI card, New laptops have wlan built in) to the router. You'll need to connect one of the pc's to router via an ethernet cable at first, as you configure the wireless parameters. You can also use cables to connect your pc to the router. Just make sure it has a network card.

The connectors in the router should be somehow marked as which ones are the switch and which one is the one that you'll use to connect the rj45 from the phone line. It might be called WAN, connect the pc that you'll use to configure the router to one of it's LAN slots. Then look into the manual of the router as how to configure it.

I don't think you have it built in (integrated), but as a PCI card. Similar to how you have your sound card/graphics card. Maybe a couple of pictures will help you to understand.

Wireless

Wired

But make sure that your pc has a network card as the adsl modem won't work as one, even though the connector is the same.

Your computer will almost certainly not have an ADSL modem in a PCI slot.

You already had an ADSL modem. That is the USB one.

Routers are networking equipment. They connect to machines using standard RJ45 cables. Ethernet.

A phone line is an RJ11 port. Very similar looking to RJ45 but slimmer.
