Looking for a new laptop. Need help!

At uni this year I've got a bunch of labs that involves me coding in C++ on the uni computers running Linux. It would be hella-easier if I could just do it on my own laptop and thereby be able to do it at any time, but my current one is far too bulky and heavy to carry around. Therefore I'm thinking about buying a small, easy to carry laptop that I could take with me to do uni work. Preferably I would dual boot to Linux and have a Windows partition as well though if theres one that comes with Linux preinstalled I could deal with just using that.

Main concerns would be portability, battery life and cost. Doesn't need to be the fastest thing in the world, the biggest job it will be doing is compiling the programs but I don't think any of them will be too major.

Can anybody help me out? I have no idea where to start in looking for something like this. Don't really have a budget at this point because I have absolutely no idea how expensive this sort of thing would be...
